Moving from conflicted situation between one’s own roles and life experiences to the synergy allows people to have greater awareness of their personal resources and to apply them in all areas of their lives. But how does this happen, in what way? How do people experience it? This is the question and objective behind the MAAM project. The research uncovers how digital innovation can build new bridges between people’s life experiences and the workplace. The research starts from the experience of motherhood, which is paradoxical in its nature – on one hand unleashes energy, strength and competencies in the woman, on the other hand it is often perceived as a condition of fragility (physical, psychological) and is not recognized as a bearer of skills at the workplace. The MAAM project is scientifically based on theories such as role accumulation, positive spillover, generativity, experiential learning and enriches them with two original views: life-based learning, that postulates that life is in itself one of the richest learning sources, and transilience, a meta-competence that identifies people’s ability to actively bring resources and skills from one life domain to another and vice versa. This is an action-research project, with the aim to investigate and simultaneously activate the development of personal resources and soft skills in people.This objective is achieved through an innovative digital platform that guides the woman in a process of self-reflection and awareness on different topics: the relationship with her identity and her own desires; the caretaking experience with the child and other people; the ways of listening, observing and empathizing and the consequences towards herself, others and the environment; the dynamics of delegation and decision making; the discovery of own “superpowers” and the reflection on the changes taking place. The research summarizes the results of the digital platform for the first 19 months and has been focused on mothers’ experience. It has the aim of investigating the impact of motherhood on the personal development and the soft skills of the women, highlighting which resources are active, which behaviours are adopted, how women perceive their roles and deal with the changes that comes with maternity. This is part of a broader framework, which has been starting to investigate / activate personal development and soft skills in fathers and whose aim is to investigate how caretaking activities trigger people’s personal development and embed them with soft skills that can be used in every area of life, including workplace.

AbstractIndividuals experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage in childhood have a higher rate of inflammation-related diseases decades later. Little is known about the mechanisms linking early life experiences to the functioning of the immune system in adulthood. To address this, we explore the relationship across social-to-biological layers of early life social exposures on levels of adulthood inflammation and the mediating role of gene regulatory mechanisms, epigenetic and transcriptomic profiling from blood, in 2,329 individuals from two European cohort studies. Consistently across both studies, we find transcriptional activity explains a substantive proportion (78% and 26%) of the estimated effect of early life disadvantaged social exposures on levels of adulthood inflammation. Furthermore, we show that mechanisms other than cis DNA methylation may regulate those transcriptional fingerprints. These results further our understanding of social-to-biological transitions by pinpointing the role of gene regulation that cannot fully be explained by differential cis DNA methylation.

Despite its high media profile and growing popularity there have been no empirical investigations of the impact of life coaching on goal attainment, metacognition or mental health. This exploratory study used life coaching as a means of exploring key metacognitive factors involved as individuals move towards goal attainment. In a within-subjects design, twenty adults completed a life coaching program. Participation in the program was associated with enhanced mental health, quality of life and goal attainment. In terms of metacognition, levels of self-reflection decreased and levels of insight increased. Life coaching has promise as an effective approach to personal development and goal attainment, and may prove to be a useful platform for a positive psychology and the investigation of the psychological mechanisms involved in purposeful change in normal, nonclinical populations.

Purpose – The purpose of the current research is to evaluate how customer contact level and customer service-based role conflict influence the relationship between customer emotions and work engagement, while simultaneously evaluating psychological capital as an outcome of work engagement. Customer service research highlights the impact of employee attitudes and behaviors on customer satisfaction. More recently, this relationship has been examined in reverse, evaluating how customer emotions influence the employee. Unfortunately, previous research has not evaluated variables that inhibit the impact of customer emotions on the employee. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from frontline employees across high and low customer contact service contexts. The hypothesized relationships were tested using structural equation modeling. Findings – This research provides empirical evidence that employee-perceived customer delight impacts employee work engagement. However, through a process of feedback, customer service-based role conflict impacts the relationship between customer emotions and employee emotions. Finally, the conceptual model illustrates how engaged employees can create their own personal resources vis-à-vis the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions. Research limitations/implications – This research identifies both antecedent and outcomes variables associated with work engagement, as well as identified mediating factors. Practical implications – Results suggest that the quality and level of contact that frontline employees have with customers impact their work engagement. Furthermore, engaged frontline employees have the ability to create their own personal resources. Originality/value – This research makes contributions to the understanding of the impact of positive customer emotions on frontline employees.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand how “good” HR practice is characterised in SMEs and what the drivers are for adopting this good practice. The paper also explores methods for measuring the impact of HR practice which are helpful and realistic in the context of an SME. Design/methodology/approach – The research was carried out in one SME, a bakery based in South Yorkshire. It was an action research project which utilised semi-structured interviews, participant observation on the factory floor and analysis of company documentation in the diagnosis phase. In addition, reflections on action interventions have informed the findings, together with post-project, semi-structured interviews with key actors three years after the completion of the project. Findings – The drivers of good HR practice were found to be size, market position, external “coercive networks”, presenting issues, the ideology of the managing director and the energy of an HR champion. The findings demonstrate that the impact of “good” HR practice can be best evaluated in SMEs through one-shot, cost-based metrics or more strategic qualitative measures. Originality/value – The paper develops an original model to show the relationship between the drivers, the HR practices adopted and measurable outcomes. This makes an important contribution to the debate about HRM within SMEs and it has practical value for informing the development of good HR practice in SMEs.

Статья посвящена анализу особенностей традиции гостеприимства у кряшен, самобытного этноконфессионального сообщества, характеризующегося сочетанием татароязычия и православного вероисповедания. Изыскания автора основываются как на письменных источниках, так и на оригинальных полевых материалах, касающихся преимущественно двух этнографических групп кряшенского населения Республики Татарстан, молькеевской и заказанской, каждая из которых обладает собственной этнокультурной спецификой. Этнографический материал, анализируемый в статье, относится к хронологическому отрезку от рубежа к. XIX – нач. XX вв. до настоящего дня. Ставится задача, во-первых, исследовать проявления гостеприимства в конкретной этнической среде в его функциональных разновидностях; во-вторых, проследить трансформацию этого обычая в условиях современности. Показана саморефлексия автора-исследователя по поводу проблемы взаимовлияния объекта и субъекта изучения (этнографического наблюдения) и роль субъективности в научном постижении иной этнической культуры. Отношения диалога между исследователем и информантом рассматриваются как значимый приоритетный аналитический подход. В этой связи на примере опыта полевой работы в среде кряшенского населения Республики Татарстан выявляется воздействие, которое традиция гостеприимства в ее современном бытовании оказала на полевые исследования ученых-этнологов. Важнейшим ресурсом в процессе работы, по мнению автора, оказались взаимная расположенность и доверие, во многом базирующиеся на обычае гостеприимства. The article is devoted to the analysis of the tradition of hospitality among the Kryashens, an authentic ethno-confessional community, characterized by a combination of the Tatar-speaking and Orthodox faith. The research is based on both written sources and original field materials concerning mainly two ethnographic groups of the Kryashen population of the Republic of Tatarstan – Molkeevskaya and Zakazan, each of them having its own ethno-cultural specificity. The ethnographic material analyzed in the article refers to the period from the turn of the XIX – early XX centuries to the present day. The task is, firstly, to study the manifestations of hospitality in a specific ethnic environment in its functional varieties; secondly, to trace the transformation of this custom in modern conditions. The self-reflection of the author-researcher on the problem of the mutual influence of the object and the subject of study (ethnographic observation), the role of subjectivity in the scientific comprehension of another ethnic culture is shown. Understanding the relationship of the dialogue between the researcher and the informant is considered as a significant analytical approach. In this regard, the experience of fieldwork among the Kryashen population of the Republic of Tatarstan reveals the impact that the tradition of hospitality in its contemporary form had on the field research of ethnologists. Mutual disposition and trust, largely based on the custom of hospitality, turned out to be the most important resource in the process of an ethnological study.

This chapter investigates the relationship between industry and academia from the perspective of industry. In addition to the theoretical review, it is based on feedback from industry leaders on how they see the role of their organizations in wider society. This chapter utilizes case studies to examine the relationship between specific companies, their academic partners, and the wider society. It focuses on the UK experience reflecting the location of its author. It specifically looks at the links between Coventry University, a British public institution located in the West Midlands, and its selected partners: the Unipart Group, Horiba MIRA, Interserve, and KPIT in India. It also refers to a bespoke Global Leaders Programme which is an exclusive, extra-curricular offering, designed to enhance students’ leadership and soft skills and prepare them for future employment after graduation. Wherever possible, the author aimed to obtain feedback from the industry representatives to assess their views on the impact of their companies on the wider society. In the same spirit, relevant colleagues from Coventry University were asked for their feedback to ensure that both perspectives were fairly captured. The examples given, and indeed, the philosophy behind the projects could be transferred to other countries and applied to other industries.

The discussion about the evaluation of the teaching of entrepreneurship or training programmes from the perspective of a higher education institution is usually linked to the quantitative impact of entrepreneurship creation and often does not take into account the increase in skills and abilities, or the evolution towards a more entrepreneurial mind-set. In this chapter, the authors propose to analyse the learning perceptions of students who participated in the Poliempreende programme of Portuguese polytechnics. The goal is to see if students feel that their participation was profitable, not only for their personal development, but also for their professional work. Within a perspective of learning in an entrepreneurship, the transformation of entrepreneurs' experiences into knowledge can influence the relationship between their professional experience and the development of their wisdom about entrepreneurship. Thus, it is proposed to implement the evaluation of the impact of the perception of these students through the evaluation model of Kirkpatrick.

AbstractThere are various artist-characters in many of O’Neill’s plays, which – if interpreted in a new way – can be regarded as dramatic embodiment of multi-level significance. With their expressed awareness of being artists, they occasionally go beyond the narrow confines of O’Neill’s personal life experiences to reveal an implicit re-examination of the author’s own theatrical methods. In O’Neill plays poets are usually of symbolic significance in contrast to commercially motivated society. The novelist characters convey O’Neill’s tendency to combine novel and drama; they also represent the difficulties O’Neill experiences in such an endeavor. The characters involved with drama production reveal O’Neill’s ideas on the relationship between drama writing and production. The analysis attempts to explore the pluralistic space of interpretation of O’Neill’s artist-characters so that a more perceptive comprehension of his plays can be achieved.

This article is the result of an empirical research project analysing the relationship between the resources of socially maladjusted youth and their strategies for coping with stress. The research was focused on non-formal functional support from family members and two types of personal resources – resilience and a sense of coherence – in forming tendencies to take advantage of adaptive and non-adaptive strategies for coping with stress. The research participants consisted of young, socially maladjusted people who have been directed to attendance centres, youth sociotherapy centres, and youth educational centres all over Poland ( N = 468). Structural equation modelling was used to verify the basic hypotheses. The observed data confirmed most of the assumptions. The sense of family support was positively related to an adaptive strategy and, contrary to expectations, to a non-adaptive strategy. The family support experienced not only had a direct impact on intensifying adaptive and non-adaptive strategies but also influenced coping with the use of personal resources. The impact of family resources on resilience and the sense of coherence were similar, but the relationship of a sense of coherence was weaker than the relationship of resilience with an adaptive strategy. Resilience turned out to be the strongest predictor of an adaptive strategy. The relationship between resilience and a non-adaptive strategy was insignificant, but a sense of coherence worked in favour of planning, positively reinterpreting the situation and actively undertaking actions focused on the problem, and at the same time lowered the tendency to release emotions and self-blame.

The author of the article attempts to analyze the current pre-school education system of Uzbekistan, its main challenges, shortcomings and reforms. Moreover, this research will provide the study of the importance of learning at early ages (3-5) and its impact on the future learning and personal development of children. The research highlights the analysis of domestic and foreign prospects of the studied issue. Namely, the researcher presents the view that developed countries pay more and more attention to boost the quality of pre-school educational institutions, the efficiency of curriculum, and implementation of more social activities to enhance the development of children’s soft skills; however, this is not the case in developing countries such as Uzbekistan. Thus, the goal of the paper would be to elaborate on the need to consider, remodel and upgrade the pre-school education system further and trigger to start some campaigns which will aim to develop young mother’s personal and professional development. The study will highlight the impact of pre-school education by evaluating the literature in the field, looking deeper at the experience of developed countries as well as considering the situation in Uzbekistan regarding the mentioned area. The findings of the paper can be deployed to prepare educational policy and contribute to the development of the entire education system of Uzbekistan.
