The paper concentrates on architectural discourse of the interwar period (1918–1940) of Lithuania. The main objective of the paper is to represent the history of the Lithuanian architectural thought of the period through analysis of the interwar press. Due to a wide scope of the problem the paper is devoted to one of the major problems of architectural theory – relation of policy/power and space. Following publications in the press, a few dominant aspects of the problem were distinquished: representation of the state (as an exemplar element of global political ideology), and issues of social housing (as illustration of local, towards practical decisions oriented policy). It is discovered that the dominant theoretical position concerning the matters of spatial representation is discussions on “national style”. While the socio-political discourse of Modern Movement mainly concentrates on discussions about “social housing colonies”. Santrauka Straipsnis skirtas Lietuvos tarpukario laikotarpio (1918–1940) teorinio diskurso analizei. Tekste, remiantis periodikoje publikuotais straipsniais, skirtais architektūros temoms, siekiama pažvelgti į šio periodo architektūrinės minties palikimą. Dėmesio objektu pasirinkta viena iš svarbesnių architektūrinio diskurso temų – architektūros ir politikos sąsajos. Išskiriami keli to meto spaudoje dominavę architektūros ir politikos sąveikos aspektai: valstybės erdvinės reprezentacijos problematika (kaip globalios, ideologinės politikos apraiška) bei socialinio būsto problematika (kaip lokalios, į tiesioginius sprendimus orientuotos politikos apraiška). Nustatyta, kad reprezentacinėje plotmėje dominuojanti teorinė pozicija – „tautinio stiliaus“ paieškos. Socialinei, politizuotai modernizmo teorijai būdingi aspektai daugiausiai reiškėsi menkiau teoretizuotose diskusijose apie „pigių būstų kolonijų“ kūrimą.

The paper has the ambition to map the social and political situation in Slovakia in the period between the two world wars which had impact on the situation of families and education. After the establishment of a common state of Czechs and Slovaks – the 1st Czechoslovak Republic (1918), there were new conditions for reform movements and ideas of pedagogical thinking. The study is focusing on social events and transformations that guide the school system and education. The paper analyses specifically, what inspired the education and practical functioning of schools in Slovakia in this new state formation of the multinational Republic. The obtained picture tells about the state of reforms in education with its penetration into also into the family education pattern in Slovakia is partially compared with the conditions in the Czech Republic. The educational and upbringing objectives of this period are presented through the statements of historical documents, from a review of available educational literature and the press. We also deal with the question, what ideological ideas of the interwar years had an impact on the setting of goals and in family education. What did parents follow in their daily upbringing at the beginning of the 20th century and in the era between the two world wars? The paper, therefore, gives also the insight into the history of everyday life of Slovak families and into the family education in the interwar period.

This chapter explores movement and circulation across the Mediterranean and seeks to contribute to a history of proto-nationalism in the Maghrib and the Middle East at a particular moment prior to World War I. The discussion is particularly concerned with the interface of two Mediterranean spaces: the Middle East (Egypt, Ottoman Empire) and North Africa (Morocco), where the latter is viewed as a case study where resistance movements sought external allies as a way of compensating for their internal weakness. Applying methods developed by Subaltern Studies, and linking macro-historical approaches, namely of a translocal movement in the Muslim Mediterranean, it explores how the Egypt-based society, al-Ittihad al-Maghribi, through its agent, Aref Taher, used the press as an instrument for political propaganda, promoting its Pan-Islamic programme and its goal of uniting North Africa.

The history of Islam in part of what is known today as Nigeria datesto about the loth Century. Christianity dates to the late 18th Century. Bythe middle of the 19th Century, when Nigerian newspapers began to appearon the streets of Nigeria, both religions had won so many followers and extendedto so many places in Nigeria that very few areas were untouched bytheir influence. The impact of both religions on their adherents not only determinedtheir spiritual life, but influenced their social and political lives aswell. It therefore became inevitable that both religions receive coverage frommost of the newspapers of the time. How the newspapers as media of informationand communication reported issues about the two religions is thetheme of this paper.Rationale for the StudyThe purpose of this study is to highlight the context in which such earlynewspapers operated and the factors that dictated their performance. Thisis because it is assumed that when a society faces external threat to its territory,culture, and independence, all hands (the press inclusive) ought tobe on deck to resist the threat with all might. Were newspapers used as verbalartillery and how did they present each religion? It is also assumed thatin a multireligious society a true press should be objective and serve as avanguard in the promotion of the interest of the people in general and notcreate or foster an atmosphere of religious conflict. The study also aims atfinding out whether the papers promoted intellectual honesty and fosteredthe spirit of unity particularly when the society was faced with the encroachmentof the British who posed a threat to their freedom, culture, economy ...

Deze publicatie door Luc Vandeweyer van de briefwisseling van de Alveringemse kapelaan en Vlaams voorman Cyriel Verschaeve met de uitgesproken Vlaamsgezinde zuster Gabriëlle Van Caeneghem, medegrondlegster van de katholieke Vlaamse Meisjesbeweging en van de vrouwelijke studentenbeweging, bezorgt ons een inzicht in de gevoelswereld van Verschaeve en zijn literaire en mystieke opvattingen. Tegelijk zijn de brieven illustratief voor de sfeer van het mystiek-spirituele wereldbeeld waarin een (kwantitatief en kwalitatief) belangrijk deel van de Vlaamse beweging tijdens het interbellum baadde. Daarenboven blijkt er de verbondenheid uit van beide respondenten met de religieus-socialistisch bewogen geschriften van de Nederlandse dichteres en communiste Henriette Roland Holst-Van der Schalck. Seven letters, saved from destruction at the eleventh hour…Luc Vandeweyer's publication of the correspondence of Cyriel Verschaeve, curate of Alveringem and Flemish-nationalist leader, with the outspoken pro-Flemish sister Gabriël van Caeneghem, co-founder of the Catholic Flemish girls' movement and the movement of women students, provides us with an understanding of the emotional life of Verschaeve and his literary and mystical beliefs. The letters also illustrate the atmosphere of the mystico-religious worldview indulged in by a (quantitatively and qualitatively) large part of the Flemish movement during the Interwar period. It also demonstrates the solidarity of both correspondents with the religio-socialist inspired writings of the Dutch poet and communist Henriette Roland Holst-Van der Schalck. Finally the contribution also describes the history of these archival records, as a striking example of how archivists and/or historiographers sometimes are obliged to organise an actual round up in order to save important historical documents from destruction.

AbstractRed Guard newspapers and pamphlets (wenge xiaobao) were a key source for early research on the Cultural Revolution, but they have rarely been analysed in their own right. How did these publications regard their status and function within the larger information ecosystem of the People's Republic, and what is their role in the history of the modern Chinese public sphere? This article focuses on a particular subset of Red Guard papers, namely those published by radical groups within the PRC's press and publication system. These newspapers critiqued the pre-Cultural Revolution press and reflected upon the possible futures of a new, revolutionary Chinese press. Short-lived as these experiments were, they constitute a test case to re-examine the functioning of the public in a decidedly “uncivil” polity. Ultimately, they point to the ambiguous potential of the public for both consensus and conflict, liberation and repression, which characterizes the press in 20th-century China.

The French word dispositif, applied to visual art, encompasses several components of an artwork, such as the apparatus itself as well as its display conditions and the viewers themselves. In this article, I examine the concept of dispositif in the context of holography and, in particular, synthetic holography (computer-generated holography). This analysis concentrates on the holographic space and its effects on time and colors. A few comparisons with the history of spatial representation allow us to state that the holographic dispositif breaks with the perspective tradition and opens a new field of artistic research and experimentation.
