Firms in the construction industry have always had to deal with the challenges of the economic cycle and develop strategies to deal with the resulting fluctuations in their business environment. In the context of the 2008–2011 double-dip recession in the UK, the results of a survey targeting the top one hundred construction companies in the UK are reported here. This research is particularly intended to assess whether the strategies of large companies in the construction sector, when faced with the issues associated with the variation in the economic cycle, have changed since the previous business cycle (i.e. the 1986–1990 boom followed by the 1990–1991 recession). The survey reveals the challenges that companies have faced, reports on company behaviour and on the policies adopted. While there are many similarities between policies adopted during the recessionary periods of the two cycles, the research found notable changes in attitudes towards diversification, human resource management and price bidding.

<h3><span lang="EN-US">This study was conducted to analyze human resource management strategies and safety culture as competitive advantages to improve company performance in the construction industry in Indonesia and to identify related factors to achieve competitive advantage in the construction industry. Primary data were collected by distributing questionnaires to 174 construction companies in Indonesia. The results of SEM data processing using the Lisrel software show that recruitment, selection, performance management, compensation, and training and development that are integrated with safety culture can be a competitive advantage and can improve the performance of construction companies in Indonesia. Future studies can use this strategic human resource management model in different industrial sectors by increasing the number of samples so that the research results can be generalized to the intended population.</span></h3>

Human resource management framework being one of the issue across global construction industries. It is a major concern in the construction industry because inefficiency, delay and cost from construction work could be affected and causing great losses to individuals and organizations. Therefore, resource management framework is changing the way resource management can be approached. Most of the construction companies around the world are implementing human resource management systems to reduce cost, eliminate delaying project, and to provide an efficient framework in their construction site. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of implementing human resource management framework in construction site. The methodology included is a combination of literature review, market studies and detailed questionnaire survey before starting the actual survey, a pilot study for this questionnaire was done, which confirms its acceptance. Based on findings from the researcher, most of the company and contractor firms have awareness about management of resource at construction site as human resource management is a major concern on construction industries.

The construction sector lags other industries when it comes to the implementation of sustainability. This paper highlights some of the key barriers in implementing sustainability within the construction industry sector and proposes recommendations to address them. The paper suggests that the four main barriers faced by the construction industry in implementing sustainability are unclear definitions of sustainable construction, ineffectiveness of sustainability reporting tools (SRTs), slow adoption of ‘green’ technology and the negligence of human resource management. This paper provides an original perspective and challenges current practices (or lack thereof) which hinders the successful implementation of sustainability in construction. It will be of interest to project owners, contractors, academics and other construction practitioners who are interested in the outlook of sustainability within the property and construction industry.

The case could also be used in management development programmes, seminars and workshops that have HRM as a component of the programme. The case can be used effectively for classroom discussions as well as in distance learning programmes. Case overview The case looks into the HRM practices at a leading Indian construction company – ABC Constructions. The case tries to explain the management perspectives behind the people practice initiatives undertaken by the company in order to recruit/retain and nurture talent. The case also explains the basic principles underlying its human resource policies. It tries to explain the initiatives taken by ABC Constructions to meet the challenges posed by the changing business environment, as the company moves beyond the borders of the country of its initial operations. The case provides an overview of unique challenges faced by a company in the Indian construction industry, where a significant number of people executing its projects are not its permanent employees. Expected learning outcomes The students would get a fairly good understanding of existing good practices in the field of human resource management, especially in the context of a multifaceted and labour intensive construction industry in the Indian corporate scenario. Anecdotes of actual experiences with respect to people management would facilitate greater understanding of the complexities involved at the grass root level of functioning and implementation. This study is guided by the need to develop a framework for workforce management decisions in the context of the construction industry in the UAE. A full contextual framework involving all the factors that can possibly play a role in the success of workforce management decisions has been delineated. The factors considered are related to hiring, selection, and quality of workers. The literature has focused not only on the overarching strategies and tactics but also on how day-to-day decision-making occurs while using human resource management for productivity growth of an organization. The data was collected from three construction companies in the UAE. The findings of the study are in line with the findings of previous works.

     Suicide attacks, bombings, explosions became the part of daily life in Iraq. Consequently, the threat of terrorism put the Iraqi construction sector in the face of unique and unusual challenges that not seen on other countries. These challenges can have extensive impact on construction projects. This paper seeks to examine the impact of the terrorist attacks on construction industry and determine the extent to which the impact of terrorism on construction projects in terms of cost, schedule, and quality. This study adapted quantitative and qualitative approaches to collect data using questionnaire survey and interviews, as well as historical data. The study focused on projects that have been the target of terrorist strikes in Diyala governorate. A variety of statistical procedures were employed in data analysis. The results revealed the extent to which terrorist attacks impact construction projects in terms of cost, time, and quality. The results of this study will enhance the awareness of all construction parties to the impact of the terrorist attacks against construction projects. Eventually, this can develop a risk management assessment and assist contractors to properly protect projects and buildings to minimize injuries and fatalities in the event of terrorism.

The business would not be able to achieve the set goals without qualified specialists. Therefore human resource management is one of the most important processes to an organisation. HRM policy aspects – employee motivation and job satisfaction – directly contribute to customer satisfaction and loyalty. The problem is that in today’s business environment, where there is a big rivalry, maintaining customer loyalty becomes a huge task for the business. The aim of this article is to evaluate the impact of human resource management policy on customer loyalty. The article analyses concept of human resource management, evaluates the development of loyal customer behaviour, distinguishes traditional and innovative concepts of human resource management. Also, the article notices a relationship between employee satisfaction and customer satisfaction. Analysis of empirical research level shows the impact of human resource management policy on customer loyalty and provides a research model.
