Objective.Diabetes is associated with several disorders of the hand, including stenosing flexor tenosynovitis (SFTS). The feature of SFTS in diabetics is a higher prevalence of multiple digit involvement. We examined the magnitude of the tendency for involvement of more digits by SFTS in diabetic patients than in nondiabetic patients, and attempted to clarify the factors influencing multiple digit involvement by SFTS in diabetics.Methods.The study comprised 302 diabetic patients with SFTS and 235 nondiabetic patients with SFTS. The total number of digits exhibiting SFTS within the 1-year period following the initial visit to the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery was investigated in a prospective manner. We compared the difference in the frequency of multiple digit involvement by SFTS between diabetic and nondiabetic patients using the chi-squared test. Multiple regression analysis was performed to examine the contribution of independent variables [defined as 12 factors including age, sex, type of diabetes, estimated duration of diabetes, HbA1c values, carpal tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren contracture, limited joint mobility (LJM), de Quervain's disease, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy, and dyslipidemia] to the total number of digits affected by SFTS in diabetic patients.Results.Diabetic patients showed a significantly higher prevalence of multiple digit involvement than nondiabetic patients (p < 0.0001). Multiple regression analysis in diabetic patients revealed that the presence of LJM was positively associated with the prevalence of multiple digit involvement (r = 0.626, p < 0.0001).Conclusion.LJM in diabetics is closely associated with SFTS involving multiple digits.

We carried out a survey of hand abnormalities in 65 Japanese adult diabetics (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus) and compared the result with that of 65 non-diabetic adults as controls. A significantly higher incidence of Dupuytren's contracture, limited joint mobility, carpal tunnel syndrome, and flexor tenosynovitis was found in the diabetic group. In the diabetic group, Dupuytren's contracture was noted in 10 patients (15%), limited joint mobility in 34 patients (52%), carpal tunnel syndrome in 21 patients (32%), and flexor tenosynovitis in 10 patients (15%). Dupuytren's contracture in the diabetic patients involved the fourth and fifth rays. In diabetic carpal tunnel syndrome, as compared to the idiopathic form, men were more frequently affected than women. Carpal tunnel syndrome showed a positive correlation with duration of the diabetes and use of insulin during the last twelve months prior to the examination. All of 10 diabetic patients with flexor tenosynovitis also had limited joint mobility. Six of these 10 patients also had carpal tunnel syndrome.

AIM: To evaluate cardiac affection in type 1 diabetes in relation to Omentin.PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty two diabetics and 30 volunteer of the same age and sex were included as a control group. Blood sample was taken for assessment of omentin and oxidized low density lipoprotein (OxLDL), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1) and lipid profile. Urine sample was taken for assessment of albumin/ creatinine ratio. 24 hour holter was also done. T-test, simple correlation followed by stepwise multiple regression analysis was used for analysis of data.RESULTS: Parameters of 24 hour holter were significantly lower in diabetics. Omentin was significantly lower, while OxLDL were significantly higher than controls. RMSSD, ST deviation and OxLDL were the parameters related to omentin by stepwise multiple regression analysis in diabetics.CONCLUSION: Diabetic patients had a cardiac autonomic neuropathy. A significant reduction of omentin and elevation OxLDL imply that they influence glucose metabolism in type 1 diabetes. Omentin had a significant relation to 24 hr holter which may reflect its role in cardiac affection. Omentin and OxLDL had a role in renal affection.

Nonenzymatic reactions between glucose and proteins yield advanced glycation end products (AGE) such as pentosidine. AGE accumulate in diabetic patients, alter the structure and function of tissue proteins, stimulate cellular response, and have thus been implicated in diabetic tissue damage. The present study was undertaken to assess the factors determining plasma total pentosidine level in diabetic patients and the possible relation between plasma pentosidine level and diabetic complications. In diabetic patients, including patients with renal failure, plasma pentosidine levels, assessed by HPLC assay, were correlated with serum creatinine (P < 0.0001). In patients with normal renal function, pentosidine levels were correlated with blood glucose control (hemoglobin Alc: P = 0.0028; fructoselysine: P = 0.0133), serum creatinine (P = 0.029), patient age (P = 0.0416), duration of diabetes (P = 0.0431), and total cholesterol (P = 0.0056) and LDL-cholesterol (P = 0.0208). Multiple regression analysis revealed an independent influence of hemoglobin Alc and serum creatinine on pentosidine levels (r2 = 0.216, P = 0.0026). Pentosidine levels were higher in patients with than in those without hypertension (P = 0.043) or ischemic heart diseases (P = 0.0061). No such differences were observed between patients with and without albuminuria or retinopathy. Multiple regression analysis revealed an independent influence of plasma pentosidine on the presence of hypertension (r2 = 0.129, P = 0.0382) and of plasma pentosidine and HDL-cholesterol on the presence of ischemic heart disease (r2 = 0.326, P = 0.0012). The present study demonstrated that plasma pentosidine level was significantly influenced by the quality of glycemic control and renal function. Pentosidine level was also correlated with hypertension and ischemic heart disease, and might be taken as a biomarker of diabetic cardiovascular risk.

Aims and MethodTo establish if participants with schizophrenia receiving depot antipsychotics had less insight than similar participants receiving oral atypical antipsychotics. We assessed the difference between these two groups.ResultsParticipants on oral antipsychotics had greater insight than those on depot antipsychotics (ITAQ, P=0.01). In the multiple regression analysis, only receiving depot antipsychotics contributed significantly to explaining variance in insight (adjusted R2=0.135, F=8.99, P=0.004).Clinical ImplicationsDepot antipsychotics seem to be prescribed to a subgroup of people with schizophrenia who are likely to be less adherent because of lower levels of insight. These individuals are on significantly higher doses of antipsychotic medication. Clinicians should review their patients on depot antipsychotics at regular intervals.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of fat infiltration, tear size, and post-operative tendon integrity, on post-operative contractility. Methods Thirty-five patients who underwent rotator cuff repair were included. The fat infiltration, tear size, and post-operative tendon integrity were evaluated by Goutallier stage, Cofield classification, and Sugaya classification, respectively. The muscle elasticity at rest and at contraction was assessed by real-time tissue elastography pre- and one-year post-operatively. We defined the difference in elasticity between at rest and at contraction as the activity value which reflects muscle contractility. Results The activity value in patients with Sugaya Type I tended to increase regardless of Cofield classification, whereas those with Sugaya Type III and IV tended to decrease. While the activity value in the patients classified as stage 1 and Type I tended to increase, patients classified as stage 2 showed decreased or constant in contractility even in those subjects classified as Type I. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed both pre- (p = 0.004, r = -0.47) and post-operative activity values (p = 0.022, r = -0.39) to be significantly correlated only with the Goutallier stage. Conclusion Multiple regression analysis indicated only the Goutallier stage was a significant independent factor for contractility of the supraspinatus muscle. Supraspinatus muscle contractility in patients classified as Types III and IV based on the Sugaya classification tended to decrease post-operatively, while patients whose contractility increased post-operatively were characterized by having a Type I tendon integrity.

AbstractThe multiple regression analysis of twin data in which a cotwin's score is predicted from a proband's score and the coefficient of relationship (the basic model) provides a statistically powerful test of genetic etiology. When an augmented model that also contains an interaction term is fitted to the same data set, direct estimates of heritability (h2) and the proportion of variance due to shared environmental influences (c2) are obtained. A simple transformation of selected twin data prior to regression analysis facilitates direct estimates of h2g (an index of the extent to which the difference between the mean of probands and that of the unselected population is heritable) and a test of the hypothesis that the etiology of deviant scores differs from that of variation within the normal range.

This research aims to examine the effect of budgetary growth, budgetary participation, and asymmetric information on budgetary slack in the regional expenditure budget in Indonesia, either partially or simultaneously. The research object is the amount of regional expenditures budget and realization of 33 provinces in Indonesia for period 2008—2016. In this research, budgetary growth is measured in percentage by the difference between the certain year budget and the previous one. Furthermore, budgetary participation is measured by the size of the personnel budget and asymmetric information is measured by the amount of budget allocated in each province. The statistical method used in this research is parametric statistical inferential by using multiple regression analysis. The results showed that partially both budgetary growth and budgetary participation did not affect the budgetary slack significantly, while asymmetric information had significant influence. However, simultaneously these three variables have significant effect on the budgetary slack. Therefore, it can be concluded that actually there is a phenomenon of budgetary slack in the regional expenditure budget in Indonesia for period 2008—2016. This phenomenon is influenced simultaneously by the budgetary growth, budgetary participation, and asymmetric information that explaining the phenomenon of the budgetary slack for 72.7%.

Seaweed-Kappaphycus-Euchema Cottonii and Denticulum species was first cultivated at Sabah side of Sebatik in 2009. By November 2014, sixty one Sabahan seaweed farmers cultivated 122 ha or 3,050 long lines. Thirty Sabahan seaweed farmers in Kampung Pendekar (3.2 m.t dried) and 31 in Burst Point (12.5 m.t dried) produced 16 metric tonnes of dried seaweed contributed 31% to Tawau’s total production (51 m.t). The remaining 69% were from farmers in Cowie Bay that separates Sebatik from municipality of Tawau. Indonesian in Desa Setabu, Sebatik started in 2008. However, the number of Indonesian seaweed farmers, their cultivated areas and production (as well as quality) in Sebatik increased many times higher and faster than the Sabah side of Sebatik. In 2009 more than 1,401 households in Kabupaten Nunukan (including Sebatik) cultivated over 700 ha and have produced 55,098.95 and 116, 73 m.t dried seaweed in 2010 and 2011 respectively. There is a divergence in productions from farming the sea off the same island under similar weather conditions. Which of the eight explanatory factors were affecting production of seaweeds in Sebatik? Using Cobb Douglas production function, Multiple Regression analysis was conducted on 100 samples (50 Sabahan and 50 Indonesian). Results; Variable significant at α = 0.05% are Experience in farming whereas Farm size; Quantity of propagules and Location — Dummy are the variables significant at α 0.01%. Not significant are variables Fuel; Age; Number of family members involved in farming and Education level.
