High-speed CMOS camera is a new kind of transducer to make the videogrammetric measurement for monitoring the displacement of high-speed shaking table structure. The purpose of this paper is to validate the three-dimensional coordinate accuracy of the shaking table structure acquired from the presented high-speed videogrammetric measuring system. In the paper, all of the key intermediate links are discussed, including the high-speed CMOS videogrammetric measurement system, the layout of the control network, the elliptical target detection, and the accuracy validation of final 3D spatial results. Through the accuracy analysis, the submillimeter accuracy can be made for the final the three-dimensional spatial coordinates which certify that the proposed high-speed videogrammetric technique is a better alternative technique which can replace the traditional transducer technique for monitoring the dynamic response for the shaking table structure.

This article proposes a modified sequential multilateration method for measuring three-dimensional coordinates. The measuring system consists of a single laser tracker and four relay targets whose relative positions have been pre-calibrated by the multilateration method. The laser tracker is fixed on three prescribed positions successively, and these positions can be calibrated by using the distances between the laser tracker and the four relay targets based on the multilateration principle. Subsequently, the three-dimensional coordinates of each under-test point can be determined by the three laser trackers’ positions based on the trilateration principle. This method is more flexible than previous multilateration methods for three-dimensional coordinate collection, especially if the measurement space is partially covered by other objects. The mathematical model of this method is established. Based on the Monte Carlo method, a series of computer simulations are performed to optimize the system arrangement by investigating the performances of the measuring system with different system arrangement, and an optimal system arrangement is finally obtained. Practical measurement is also conducted to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method by comparing with a reference coordinate measuring machine.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to solve the problem that the analytic solution model of spatial three-dimensional coordinate measuring system based on dual-position sensitive detector (PSD) is complex and its precision is not high. Design/methodology/approach A new three-dimensional coordinate measurement algorithm by optimizing back propagation (BP) neural network based on genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed. The mapping relation between three-dimensional coordinates of space points in the world coordinate system and light spot coordinates formed on dual-PSD has been built and applied to the prediction of three-dimensional coordinates of space points. Findings The average measurement error of three-dimensional coordinates of space points at three-dimensional coordinate measuring system based on dual-PSD based on GA-BP neural network is relatively small. This method does not require considering the lens distortion and the non-linearity of PSD. It has simple structure and high precision and is suitable for three-dimensional coordinate measurement of space points. Originality/value A new three-dimensional coordinate measurement algorithm by optimizing BP neural network based on GA is proposed to predict three-dimensional coordinates of space points formed on three-dimensional coordinate measuring system based on dual-PSD.

Recently, in the loading tests for steel members, the deformation value is measured by calculating a distance of both cross-heads. This measuring method encounters a test error due to various environmental factors, such as initial slip, etc.. Especially, in the case of welded members, the non-uniform deformation behavior in welded joints is observed because of the effect of welding residual stress and weld metal. This is mainly responsible for a test error and a loss of the reliability for used test instruments. Therefore, to improve the accuracy and the applicability of measuring system, it is necessary to employ a visual monitoring system which can accurately measure the local and overall deformation of welded members. In this paper, to accurately measure a deformation of welded members, a visual monitoring system (VMS) was developed by using three-dimensional digital photogrammetry. The VMS was applied to the loading tests of a welded member. The accuracy and the applicability of VMS was verified by comparing to the deformation value measured by a test instrument (MTS-810). The characteristics of the behavior near a welded joint were investigated by using VMS.

As a step towards developing a finite element model of the knee that can be used to study how the variables associated with a meniscal replacement affect tibio-femoral contact, the goals of this study were 1) to develop a geometrically accurate three-dimensional solid model of the knee joint with special attention given to the menisci and articular cartilage, 2) to determine to what extent bony deformations affect contact behavior, and 3) to determine whether constraining rotations other than flexion/extension affects the contact behavior of the joint during compressive loading. The model included both the cortical and trabecular bone of the femur and tibia, articular cartilage of the femoral condyles and tibial plateau, both the medial and lateral menisci with their horn attachments, the transverse ligament, the anterior cruciate ligament, and the medial collateral ligament. The solid models for the menisci and articular cartilage were created from surface scans provided by a noncontacting, laser-based, three-dimensional coordinate digitizing system with an root mean squared error (RMSE) of less than 8 microns. Solid models of both the tibia and femur were created from CT images, except for the most proximal surface of the tibia and most distal surface of the femur which were created with the three-dimensional coordinate digitizing system. The constitutive relation of the menisci treated the tissue as transversely isotropic and linearly elastic. Under the application of an 800 N compressive load at 0 degrees of flexion, six contact variables in each compartment (i.e., medial and lateral) were computed including maximum pressure, mean pressure, contact area, total contact force, and coordinates of the center of pressure. Convergence of the finite element solution was studied using three mesh sizes ranging from an average element size of 5 mm by 5 mm to 1 mm by 1 mm. The solution was considered converged for an average element size of 2 mm by 2 mm. Using this mesh size, finite element solutions for rigid versus deformable bones indicated that none of the contact variables changed by more than 2% when the femur and tibia were treated as rigid. However, differences in contact variables as large as 19% occurred when rotations other than flexion/extension were constrained. The largest difference was in the maximum pressure. Among the principal conclusions of the study are that accurate finite element solutions of tibio-femoral contact behavior can be obtained by treating the bones as rigid. However, unrealistic constraints on rotations other than flexion/extension can result in relatively large errors in contact variables.

The article presents the modeling of the dynamics of the vapor-gas mixture and heat and mass transfer (sorption-desorption) in the capillary structure of the porous medium. This approach is underpinned by the fact that the porous structure is represented by a system of linear microchannels oriented along the axes of a three-dimensional coordinate system. The equivalent diameter of these channels corresponds to the average pore diameter, and the ratio of the total pore volume to the volume of the entire porous material corresponds to its porosity. The entire channel area is modeled by a set of cubic elements with a certain humidity, moisture content, pressure and temperature. A simulation is carried out taking into account the difference in temperatures of each of the phases: solid, liquid and gas.
