An Enhanced Petri Net Model to Verify and Validate a Neural-Symbolic Hybrid System

As the Neural-Symbolic Hybrid Systems (NSHS) gain acceptance, it increases the necessity to guarantee the automatic validation and verification of the knowledge contained in them. In the past, such processes were made manually. In this article, an enhanced Petri net model is presented to the detection and elimination of structural anomalies in the knowledge base of the NSHS. In addition, a reachability model is proposed to evaluate the obtained results of the system versus the expected results by the user. The validation and verification method is divided in two stages: 1) it consists of three phases: rule normalization, rule modeling and rule verification. 2) It consists of three phases: rule modeling, dynamic modeling and evaluation of results. Such method is useful to ensure that the results of a NSHS are correct. Examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the results obtained with the method.

This paper describes safety issues important to the operation of combined fuel cell and gas turbine (hybrid) systems, and provides motivation for building dynamic modeling tools to support their development. It also describes two models — a steam reformer and a fuel cell — that will be used to investigate the dynamic performance of a hybrid system. The present goals are to develop dynamic models for these two components, ensure their reliability, and obtain a basic understanding of their performance prior to integration into a complete hybrid system model. Because of the large physical domain to be analyzed in the integrated hybrid system, both reformer and fuel cell models are simplified to a one-dimensional system of equations. Model results are presented for a tubular, counterflow steam reformer showing methane conversion and temperature behavior during initial startup, and following several step change perturbations. For the fuel cell model, a generic planar type is analyzed showing voltage and current behavior following step changes in load resistance and fuel input. The results provide confidence in each model’s reliability, enabling them to be integrated for hybrid system simulation. Results from the integrated simulations will provide guidance on future hybrid technology development needs.

In this chapter, we give a brief overview of the traditional notion of responsibility and introduce a concept of distributed responsibility within a responsibility network of engineers, driver, and autonomous driving system. In order to evaluate this concept, we explore the notion of man–machine hybrid systems with regard to self-driving cars and conclude that the unit comprising the car and the operator/driver consists of such a hybrid system that can assume a shared responsibility different from the responsibility of other actors in the responsibility network. Discussing certain moral dilemma situations that are structured much like trolley cases, we deduce that as long as there is something like a driver in autonomous cars as part of the hybrid system, she will have to bear the responsibility for making the morally relevant decisions that are not covered by traffic rules.

Abstract Hybrid system dynamics arises when discrete actions meet continuous behaviour due to physical processes and continuous control. A natural domain of such systems are emerging smart technologies which add elements of intelligence, co-operation, and adaptivity to physical entities. Various flavours of hybrid automata have been suggested as a means to formally analyse dynamics of such systems. In this article, we present our current work on a revised formal model that is able to represent state tracking and estimation in hybrid systems and thereby enhancing precision of verification verdicts.

The reduction of shipboard airborne emissions has been receiving increased attention due to the desire to improve air quality and reduce the generation of greenhouse gases. The use of a fuel cell could represent an environmentally friendly way for a ship to generate in-port electrical power that would eliminate the need to operate diesel-driven generators or use shore power. This paper includes a brief description of the various types of fuel cells in use today, together with a review of the history of fuel cells in marine applications. In addition, the results of a feasibility study conducted to evaluate the use of a fuel-cell hybrid system to produce shipboard electrical power are presented.

Renewable energy hybrid systems give a good solution in isolated sites, in the Algerian desert; wind and solar potentials are considerably perfect for a combination in a renewable energy hybrid system to satisfy local village electrical load and minimize the storage requirements, which leads to reduce the cost of the installation. For a good sizing, it is essential to know accurately the solar potential of the installation area also wind potential at the same height where wind electric generators will be placed. In this work, we optimize a completely autonomous PV-wind hybrid system and show the techno-economical effects of the height of the wind turbine on the sizing of the hybrid system. We also compare the simulation results obtained from using wind speed measured data at 10 meters and 40 meters of height with the ones obtained from using wind speed extrapolation on HOMER software.

Formal query building is an important part of complex question answering over knowledge bases. It aims to build correct executable queries for questions. Recent methods try to rank candidate queries generated by a state-transition strategy. However, this candidate generation strategy ignores the structure of queries, resulting in a considerable number of noisy queries. In this paper, we propose a new formal query building approach that consists of two stages. In the first stage, we predict the query structure of the question and leverage the structure to constrain the generation of the candidate queries. We propose a novel graph generation framework to handle the structure prediction task and design an encoder-decoder model to predict the argument of the predetermined operation in each generative step. In the second stage, we follow the previous methods to rank the candidate queries. The experimental results show that our formal query building approach outperforms existing methods on complex questions while staying competitive on simple questions.

On the example of the online game Akinator, the basic principles on which programs of this type are built are considered. Effective technics have been proposed by which artificial intelligence systems can build logical inferences that allow to identify an unknown subject from its description (predicate). To confirm the considered hypotheses, the terminological analysis of definition of the program "Akinator" offered by the author is carried out. Starting from the assumptions given by the author's definition, the article complements their definitions presented by other researchers and analyzes their constituent theses. Finally, some proposals are made for the next steps in improving the program. The Akinator program, at one time, became one of the most famous online games using artificial intelligence. And although this was not directly stated, it was clear to the experts in the field of artificial intelligence that the program uses the techniques of expert systems and is built on inference rules. At the moment, expert systems have lost their positions in comparison with the direction of neural networks in the field of artificial intelligence, however, in the case considered in the article, we are talking about techniques using both directions – hybrid systems. Games for filling semantics interact with the user, expanding their semantic base (knowledge base) and use certain strategies to achieve the best result. The playful form of such semantics filling programs is beneficial for researchers by involving a large number of players. The article examines the techniques used by the Akinator program, and also suggests possible modifications to it in the future. This study, first of all, focuses on how the knowledge base of the Akinator program is built, it consists of incomplete sets, which can be filled and adjusted as a result of further iterations of the program launches. It is important to note our assumption that the order of questions used by the program during the game plays a key role, because it determines its strategy. It was identified that the program is guided by the principles of nonmonotonic logic – the assumptions constructed by the program are not final and can be rejected by it during the game. The three main approaches to acquisite semantics proposed by Jakub Šimko and Mária Bieliková are considered, namely, expert work, crowdsourcing and machine learning. Paying attention to machine learning, the Akinator program using machine learning to build an effective strategy in the game presents a class of hybrid systems that combine the principles of two main areas in artificial intelligence programs – expert systems and neural networks.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to propose a condition-based opportunistic maintenance policy considering economic dependence for a series–parallel hybrid system with a K-out-of-N redundant structure, where a single component in series is denoted as subsystem1, and K-out-of-N redundant structure is denoted as subsystem2.Design/methodology/approachBased on the theory of Residual Useful Life (RUL), inspection points are determined, and then different maintenance actions are adopted in the purpose of minimizing the cost rate. Both perfect and imperfect maintenance actions are carried out for subsystem1. More significantly, regarding economic dependence, condition-based opportunistic maintenance is designed for the series–parallel hybrid system: preemptive maintenance for subsystem1, and both preemptive and postponed maintenance for subsystem2.FindingsThe sensitivity analysis indicates that the proposed policy outperforms two classical maintenance policies, incurring the lowest total cost rate under the context of both heterogeneous and quasi-homogeneous K-out-of-N subsystems.Practical implicationsThis model can be applied in series–parallel systems with redundant structures that are widely used in power transmission systems in electric power plants, manufacturing systems in textile factories and sewerage systems. Considering inconvenience and high cost incurred in the inspection of hybrid systems, this model helps production managers better maintain these systems.Originality/valueIn maintenance literature, much attention has been received in repairing strategies on hybrid systems with economic dependence considering preemptive maintenance. Limited work has considered postponed maintenance. However, this paper uses both condition-based preemptive and postponed maintenance on the issue of economic dependence bringing opportunities for grouping maintenance activities for a series–parallel hybrid system.
