Distributed Monitoring and Supervising System for E-Health Applications

The system presented in this chapter is mainly destined to offer support and to monitor chronic and elderly patients. In accordance with the new tendencies in the field, it integrates innovative components for data acquisition systems, Web-based virtual instrumentation, personalized user interfaces, and relational data in a complex, modular, flexible, and opened structure. Compared with other similar integrated communication systems, which are based on Wi-Fi technology, the presented one has as distinctive features: small dimensions, low power consumption, and a considerable autonomy. A large set of experiments and the corresponding results illustrates the functionality of the configurable virtual web instrument principle materialized in the E-Health Monitoring and Supervising System (EMSS) that has many possible applications. As an example, a cheap, easy to use, and personalized support destined to improve the quality of life for subjects suffering from chronic diseases or elderly patients was chosen. The implementation of the complete application included a model for gesture recognition, which allows the classification and assessment of the characteristics of the subject’s movement, highlighting even small progresses of the monitored patients.

: Computational approaches have been proven to be complementary tools of interest in identifying potential candidates for drug repurposing. However, although the methods developed so far offer interesting opportunities and could contribute to solving issues faced by the pharmaceutical sector, they also come with their constraints. Indeed, specific challenges ranging from data access, standardization and integration to the implementation of reliable and coherent validation methods must be addressed to allow systematic use at a larger scale. In this mini-review, we cover computational tools recently developed for addressing some of these challenges. This includes specific databases providing accessibility to a large set of curated data with standardized annotations, web-based tools integrating flexible user interfaces to perform fast computational repurposing experiments and standardized datasets specifically annotated and balanced for validating new computational drug repurposing methods. Interestingly, these new databases combined with the increasing number of information about the outcomes of drug repurposing studies can be used to perform a meta-analysis to identify key properties associated with successful drug repurposing cases. This information could further be used to design estimation methods to compute a priori assessment of the repurposing possibilities.

The Road Traffic Monitoring and Control System (RTMCS) presented in this paper is intended to offer support for the surveillance, control and monitoring of road networks. It integrates complex components in a modular, flexible and open structure in order to validate models that take into account real time constraints and include tools to simulate various traffic scenarios and communication technologies, WEB based virtual instrumentation, personalized user interfaces and relational data. The system can be used to change the configuration of the road map (to design new streets segments) or to visualize the results of the different traffic scenarios implying the tuning of various parameters. RTMCS also offers several advantages, one of the most important consisting of the possibility to choose different configuration and components using a web browser. An implementation variant, including suitable, promising new technologies, different maps configurations, communication devices and protocols and routing systems is presented and analyzed. A large set of experiments and the corresponding results highlight the functionality of the configurable virtual web instrument concept illustrated by the proposed system. Aspects regarding the possibility of a subsequent integration of new tools are also presented.

Developing high quality engineering course units is a challenging task. Capacity to explain complex technical solutions and behavioral phenomena of engineering technologies in a limited timeframe is not an easy job. Moreover, ensuring information reproducibility for individual study is also important. Sometimes, courses should be delivered remotely. In this context, the latest developments in information and communication technologies (ICT), including multimedia and Internet-based education platforms, facilitate the creation of reliable solutions to these challenges. Even if information technologies are helpful, careful planning is required to design quality course units because many conflicts occur in meeting quality targets. In this respect, a generic approach for improving the quality of engineering course units when a large set of requirements and constrains intervenes on the design map is introduced in this paper as a mean to identify the best places where and how ICT can aid the education process. Quality planning and innovation tools are considered to master this situation. The research shows that smart application of multimedia technologies and web-based education platforms can deliver great results towards better quality of engineering courses.

Combined with the theories of distributed monitoring, the technologies of virtual instrumentation and database management,a grid-connected photovoltaic monitoring system is developed based on virtual instrumentation technology. The hardware architecture and software programming are expounded, by hardware and software ways, various parameters of the grid-connected photovoltaic system are collected and analyzed real-timely with CompactRIO system and PXI measuring system, it realizes the functions of monitoring the performance of the PV at the real-time, detecting the power quality of the common coupling point (PCC) and historic data management. Compared with traditional monitoring system, not only it meets the requirements of grid research for sampling speed, precision and recording capacity, but also the friendly interactive interface and the flexible expansibility are more comfortable for operators.

The use of the internet for teaching and learning has become a global trend among the education practitioners over the recent decades. The integration of technology and media into Malaysian English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms has altered the methods in English Language Teaching (ELT). In response to the impact of technology in ELT, the needs of a supplementary instructional platform, and the limitations of the learning management system (LMS) in fostering second language (L2) writing skill, a web-based instructional tool was designed and developed based on a theoretical-and-pedagogical framework namely Web-based Cognitive Writing Instruction (WeCWI). To determine the key concepts while identifying the research gap, this study conducted a literature review using online search on specific keywords including “blog”, “Blogger”, “widget”, and “hyperlink” found in the scholarly articles. Based on the review of literature, Blogger was opted due to its on-screen customisable layout editing features that can be embedded with web widgets and hypertext that share the identical features. By looking into the relationship between perceptual learning preferences on perceived information and the visual representations in iconic and symbolic views, the blogs can come with two different user interfaces embedded with web widgets or hypertext. The blog with web widgets appears in a graphical form of iconic view; while hypertext only displays textual form of symbolic view without involving the visual references. With the injection of web widgets and hypertext into the blogs, WeCWI attempts to offer a technological enhanced ELT solution to overcome the poor writing skill with a better engagement while learning online through the learners’ preferred perceptual learning preferences.

Background: Binocular and accommodative vision problems are common after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Traditionally, the management of visual dysfunctions following mTBI included in-office vision rehabilitation with a trained eye care provider. The concept of providing telehealth for remote vision rehabilitation in mTBI patients is a relatively novel practice that has not been widely utilized until the recent outbreak of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Case Report: We describe the implementation of telehealth for remote vision rehabilitation during COVID-19 within the Veterans’ Health Administration (VHA) system in an adult patient with multiple confirmed histories of mTBI. Conclusion: Our telehealth remote vision rehabilitation was successfully implemented utilizing established VHA’s web-based videoconferencing tools. Therapeutic goals identified prior to COVID 19 were addressed without any challenges. The delivery of vision rehabilitation intervention via telehealth allowed for the continuance of services within the home setting that led to improvements in functional vision, decreased perception of performance challenges, and improved quality of life.

The paper presents results of clinical and psychological studies of the quality of life of elderly patients with prostate cancer following radiation therapy. Socio-psychological aspects of the quality of life were assessed using a modified scale of self-evaluation of Dembo-Rubinstein. In 3-6 months after radiation therapy there was noted significant reduction, compared to the beginning of treatment, on scales: «satisfaction with communication», «satisfaction with health», «satisfaction material conditions», «satisfaction with sexual relations», «satisfaction with activity», «satisfaction with leisure time and rest». Average indices of scales «satisfaction with health», «satisfaction with sexual relations», «satisfaction with leisure time and rest» fell below the middle. At the same time patients were not depressed by their situation did not fixed on thoughts about the disease, on the contrary the mood was significantly higher compared to the initial course of radiotherapy that could be associated with the psychological characteristics of the age of the patients in our sample.
