ABSTRACT Learning is a complex construct that involves several factors, mainly the interaction between teachers and students in the process of teaching and learning. Understanding how students learn and which factors influence academic performance is essential information for lesson planning and evaluation, in addition to allowing a better use of students’ learning potential and outcomes. The ability to constructively modify one’s behavior depends on how well we combine our experiences, reflections, conceptualizations, and planning to make improvements. This seems particularly relevant in medical education, where students are expected to retain, recall, and apply vast amounts of information assimilated throughout their training period. Over the years, there has being a gradual shift in medical education from a passive learning approach to an active learning approach. To support the learning environment, educators need to be aware of the different learning styles of their students to effectively tailor instructional strategies and methods to cater to students’ learning needs. However, the space for reflection on the process of teaching is still incipient in higher-education institutions in Brazil. The present article proposes a critical review of the importance of identifying students’ learning styles in undergraduate medical education. Different models exist for assessing learning styles. Different styles can coexist in equilibrium (multimodal style) or predominate (unimodal style) in the same individual. Assessing students’ learning styles can be a useful tool in education, once it is possible to analyze with what kind of learning students can better develop themselves, improving their knowledge and influencing positively in the process of learning. Over the last century, medical education experienced challenges to improve the learning process and curricular reform. Also, this has resulted in crucial changes in the field of medical education, with a shift from a teacher centered and subject based teaching to the use of interactive, problem based, student centered learning.

In the classroom, we will find various types of students with their special learning needs. One group of learners who have different learning needs are gifted students. The paper will focus on the study of mathematically gifted students. This research aims to obtain a description of the mathematically gifted students’ mental acts when solving fractions problems. The respondents were two students of the 7th graders in junior high school, in the West Java Province, Indonesia. The research approach was qualitative. The data were collected through paper and pencil measure, observation, and interview. The data were analyzed by grounded theory with coding and constant comparison. The results show four types of mental acts, those are interpreting, explaining, problem-solving, and inferring. The results of this study can be made as one of didactic anticipation when teachers teach the concept of fractions to the mathematically gifted student. These findings are significant to be considered by the teacher when teaching the mathematically gifted student. Teachers should anticipate how students think when they teach gifted students. So that teachers and students can achieve optimal learning outcomes.

The study investigated the pedagogical competence of teachers and its influence on student’s academic achievement. The descriptive survey research design was adopted and the census (all) sampling technique was used to sample 250 Junior High School (JHS) teachers in Ashaiman Municipality. The collected data from the close-ended questionnaire was analysed with mean and standard deviation on the scale of 1-4 and the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation was used to test the hypothesis. The study revealed that as a pedagogical competence, the teachers provided appropriate feedback, adapted to changing conditions, explained content to students and communicated learning goals effectively. It was also found that there was a weak positive relationship between the classroom management competence of teachers and student’s academic achievement. The study, therefore, concluded that the pedagogical competence of teachers could help promote deep knowledge, understanding and expectation among students if teacher’s pedagogical competencies are effective. Also, when teachers increase their knowledge and competence to manage the classroom, they could provide high expectations for student’s social support, guidance and independent thought in learning. Recommendations were made to the municipal education directorate, Ghana Education Service and Ministry of Education, Ghana based on the findings.

PROJECT BASED LEARNING IMPLEMENTATION IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN SURAKARTAAbstractProject-based learning needs to be implemented in junior high schools because by applying this model it will enhance student creativity. Project-based learning is a learning model that makes students active and innovative, completing a project in a certain period. This study aims to analyze the learning process at the junior high school in several schools in Surakarta to implement project-based learning. The design of this study is qualitative descriptive. Data analysis using Milles Huberman by observation, in-depth interviews, and student cognitive achievement. The results show that the learning that has been done in several Junior High School in Surakarta has not used project-based learning. This lack of using Project-Based learning is because the teacher has no direction or is still limited to learning using the Project-Based Learning model, so the teacher prefers to teach with lecture and discussion methods in the classroom. Even though in the 2013 curriculum, the application of a student-centered learning model is highly recommended. The researcher hopes that the results of this study will help design a curriculum that uses a project-based learning model.

Indonesia faces challenges in improving its literacy rank. In 2011, the literacy level of Indonesian fourth graders were in the 45th rank (with score 428 under 500) from 48 countries in PIRLS. In 2015 PISA’s report the fifteen-year-old Indonesian Junior High School students, occupied the 64th rank of 72 countries with score 396 under 496. To overcome this problem, the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture issued its Ministerial Regulation no. 23/2015 pertaining the students’ character building. This constitutes the basis of school-based literacy movement (Gerakan Literasi Sekolah). This study explores the praxis of literacy movement at one school (has implemented GLS since 2016) located in the condensed slum area of North Jakarta. Stratified purposeful sampling was deployed to select the research participants, i.e. 290 students and 20 teachers. The data were obtained from questionnaires and interviews. The result showed that not all teachers read the literacy guidelines determined by the government and their reading habit had not met the ideal number. Both teachers and students have different perception regarding to the time and frequency of schoolbased literacy activity. The fifteen minutes reading activity and reading strategies taught by the teachers were not varied. The teachers merely supervised the students while conducting the literacy activity. The students read the books they brought from home. The school-based literacy program gained the students’ literacy competence in understanding level (understand the content of the book they read) and built students’ character such as tolerance, teamwork skills, perseverance, responsibility, confidence, independence, politeness, and composure. Keywords: literacy movement, reading literacy, literacy competence, 15-minutereading activity
