The Implementation of IT Business Strategy in the Construction Industry

This chapter begins by describing the common problems associated with implementing IT business strategy that are faced by companies and other organizations, resulting in business planning that is not directly aligned with IT planning and IT investments not clearly supporting business strategies. It is stressed that all organizations should pursue strategic alignment practices to improve organizational performance when using IT-based resources. Case studies specific to the construction industry are presented to illustrate practical problems that companies face. With this background, the critical success factors of implementing IT business strategy are discussed. They mainly center around the goal of enabling businesses to reduce costs while at the same time improve IT’s contribution to their overall performance in terms of overall profit or net earnings. In the discussion, research finding of organizational success in strategic IT and business alignment are used to elaborate on the factors involved, both internal and external to the organization. Overall, the essential traits of successfully aligned organizations are mentioned. This is followed by describing a proposed model that is able to successfully address the alignment of business and IT by adopting a process-driven architecture that focuses on information management. Moving on, there are several aspects of preparing an organization for successful IT business strategy implementation. The next part describes some major steps of implementation like defining the goals and linking them to the performance criterion, focusing on the strategic intentions, adopting an effective plan, quantifying the cost and benefits of IT, measuring and tracking the results, and, last but not least, managing culture. Specifically on the construction industry, the chapter covers the main advantages and disadvantages of adopting IT to increase strategic competitiveness of construction companies. The illustrations from past research focus on links that are established between competitive advantage or project success and the use of technology. As background to proposing a set of recommendations on how IT business strategies can be implemented in design and construction firms, the case of IT adoption in the construction industry of Singapore is presented to serve as an overview of developments in this area. Based on the performance criteria established for these two types of firms in Singapore, appropriate enablers of implementation are suggested, including the kind of business strategy applicable to different firm types, through a process framework. The chapter concludes with a summary of the main points covered on the implementation of IT business strategy in the construction industry.

Total quality management (TQM) is a management philosophy that emphasizes on non-stop quality improvement within all aspects of the organizations. Its main aims are to satisfy customers and survive in the market. Thus, it is very vital to specify the factors that cause implementing TQM successfully. Specially, the identification of the TQM critical success factors (CSFs) is more important in the construction firms than other industries, because the majority of construction organizations are confusing related to TQM CSFs, and often they do not develop a proper framework with right and essential factors for TQM implementation. Numerous studies showed construction companies usually fail to implement TQM and achieve performance excellence at project and enterprise levels. The main purpose of this study is to determine these factors as critical success factors of TQM implementation in construction industry. For this aim, the study carried out an extensive literature review to specify the most frequently used CSFs from TQM frameworks of 37 empirical studies in different industries, in order to propose a set of appropriate TQM CSFs. So, Pareto analysis was employed to analyze comprehensively the 37 TQM frameworks. Finally, the findings of this study revealed the seven CSFs, which are as most vital elements in developing an effective model for successful TQM implementation in construction industry.

In the construction industry, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is increasingly valued as a strategic tool for business sustainable development and for addressing ethical issues. However, understanding the concept of CSR in the construction industry, and how to practice it, is limited. This study aims to explore and assess the factors critical to the successful adoption of CSR in the construction industry through the lens of critical success factors (CSFs) theory. Through a literature review, a list of potential factors that may theoretically have a major impact on CSR adoption in the construction industry was compiled as a proxy. Then, the potential factors were refined and validated by employing a Delphi technique. An expert panel of sixteen qualified Malaysian industry practitioners and academia was assembled. Results from three iteration rounds of the Delphi process depicted that successful adoption of CSR in practices depends upon eight CSFs including financial resources, top management support, managerial or internal skills on CSR, national economic growth, employees’ education and training on CSR, participation of key stakeholders in the CSR process, effective CSR communication, and organizational structure. This study contributes to the field by addressing a theme that has been covered less in literature. Knowing the CSFs for CSR adoption in advance could help the construction firms to successfully integrate CSR into business strategies and minimize the risk of failure. Policy-makers could also consider the findings when promoting the CSR agenda or development programs that adhere to the construction industry’s way forward. Although this study is particularly suited for the Malaysian context, nevertheless, the outcomes could shed some light upon the CSR initiative in other countries, since CSR adoption status in the construction industry overall does not significantly differ between countries.

Building Information Modeling Implementation (BIM) is a management task that has undergone major changes. Therefore, identifying the critical success factors in BIM implementation and identifying its implementation challenges in the construction industry is a prerequisite for this change process. The purpose of this research is to understand the construction industry in order to provide a clear understanding of the application of BIM and to provide a suitable way of the mobility of people to implement more comprehensive BIM, which in turn, implements modeling. Building information provides strategies and recommendations for the construction industry. This research, based on a review of previous study, BIM implementation methods and critical success factors in the field of implementation have been discussed, which opens the way for quantitative and qualitative method analysis. Also provides a solid foundation for organizations to make informed decisions in implementing BIM in the body of the organization structure. The main purpose of this research is to identify the factors that are important for the success of BIM implementation. Such factors include BIM potentials and the impact of these potentials on improving the performance of the companies that implement BIM. The research based on a literature review, and presents survey results and significant factors identified on the impacts of BIM implementation and organizational performance improvement.

Organizations have been trying to increase their efficiency and improve their performance in order to achieve their goals. Various factors determine organizational success. The construction industry is a project-based industry which is exceptionally dynamic. The need to identify the weak points and search for solutions to improve the performance of the construction organization is extremely crucial. The industry has always focused on the measure of project success. Previous research works have primarily focused on the measurement of financial or tangible assets. However, there is a lack of understanding of qualitative factors and their combined effect on organizational performance. Therefore, the objectives of this paper are to identify and study the success factors—both financial and non-financial factors. The potential success factors are collected from the literature review and construction experts through a questionnaire to evaluate their effect on organizational performance. The collected data have been analyzed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to shortlist the critical success factors. Thereafter, the Hierarchical Fuzzy Expert System has been used to build a prediction model based on the selected factors. The developed research/model benefits both researchers and practitioners to predict accurate company performance.


The purpose of this paper is to discuss the impact of Total Quality Management (TQM) on building construction industry in India. The critical success factors, problems, issues and challenges in effective TQM implementation in building construction industry have been briefly discussed. There are not many research studies available in India on implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) in building construction that have found out the change in the performance of the building construction companies after implementation of TQM. This study is exploratory in nature and perhaps one of the few studies which has studied the change in the performance of the construction industry in India after successful implementation of TQM. A questionnaire survey was conducted among the building construction firms in India to measure the impact on the performance of building construction after implementation of TQM. The findings show that there is a significant change in the performance level after implementation of TQM in the sample building construction organizations. Productivity has increased whereas complaints have reduced. There is an increase in repeat customers whereas rework and change orders have reduced

Abstract Background: The incorporation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) into the business strategy of construction firms boosts their corporate reputation, while at the same time reduces the risk and the external pressure for minimizing a negative societal footprint. Objectives: This study aims to determine the current state of CSR in the Croatian construction industry, in terms of knowing and practicing, and to offer a collaborative strategic view as a viable CSR approach. Methods/Approach: A survey research among large Croatian construction companies regarding CSR in the context of collaboration with stakeholders was carried out and the results were analyzed using the multidimensional unfolding procedure. Results: Results show that for the Croatian construction companies CSR activities are important, but they are not widely seen as a benefit to overall business strategies yet. Conclusions: Results of the research could be helpful to construction firms in the efficient and effective stakeholder engagement, as well as in the development of the calibrated CSR strategy.
