Blending Green with Lean - Incorporating Best-of-the-Breed Practices to Formulate an Optimum Global Supply Chain Management Framework

This chapter identifies potential areas in which firms can integrate green into current business practices based on the existing literature. An extensive literature review was conducted to examine research and practice with respect to the concurrent implementation of green, lean, and global supply chain strategies. The applied literature analysis identifies that lean not only serves as a catalyst but is also synergistic for green. Lean is beneficial for green practices, and the implementation of green practices, in turn, also has a positive influence on existing global business practices (Dües, Tan, & Tim, 2013). The chapter provides an assessment of existing academic research on the relationship and links between lean and green supply chain management practices. Existing explanatory frameworks are explored and discussed, primarily based on objectives including: (a) identification processes where lean practices are synergized with a go-green philosophy of business, (b) advocating green practices as an essential element in the lean value chain, and (c) developing a green-lean framework based on existing literature for competitive advantage for business firms.

Purpose: In order to implement Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM to support the effort in reducing the environmental impact of the supply chain processes, a framework needs to be developed. This study aimed to propose a conceptual and holistic GSCM framework to represents a roadmap towards GSCM implementation by integrating all green supply chain practices by various stakeholders of construction sector in Indonesia.Design/methodology/approach: Green practices were obtained from an extensive literature review. Questionnaire survey of GSCM stakeholders in the construction sector was conducted to obtain the preference of green supply chain variables as the proxy for variable weighting and ranking. Pairwise Comparison (PWC) and Technique for Others Preference by Similarity to Ideal (TOPSIS) were adopted to analyze the weight and to rank the green practices respectively. The finding of PWC and TOPSIS were used to develop the framework.Findings: The implementation of the GSCM in the construction sector in Indonesia is mainly focused on reducing the use of hazardous materials, the management of waste at the project site, selling products and components that are no longer used, using video conferencing both inter- and intra-organization meetings, and support from the management level in the form EMS and ISO 14001 certification.Research limitations/implications: This study did not include other GSCM performances as criteria, such as operational and logistical performance.Practical implications: An efficient evaluation technique developed by the framework can be used in decision making policies by policy makers and stakeholders of the organization which can identify and prioritize the green practices for adoption of GSCM in the construction sectorOriginality/value: The originality of this research is that GSCM framework was developed with most relevant green practices based on ranking and weighting criteria as well as the main stakeholders involved.

The global supply chain is a network of interconnected processes that create, use, and exchange records, but which were not designed to interact with one another. As such, the key to unlocking the full potential of supply chain management (SCM) technologies is achieving interoperability across participating records systems and networks. We review existing research and solutions using distributed ledger technology (DLT) and provide a survey of its current state of practice. We additionally propose a holistic solution: a DLT-based interoperable future state that could enable the interoperable, efficient, reliable, and secure exchange of records with integrity. Finally, we provide a gap analysis between our proposed future state and the current state, which also serves as a gap analysis for many fractional DLT-based SCM solutions and research.

Implementation of business education in the world of education is very important. However, many theories and teaching monotonous nature led to the knowledge of the business is difficult to be well understood. Thus, to introduce supply chain management as the business processes of an enterprise, it takes a learning method that is more innovative and creative as well as promoting business practices. One method of teaching that can address these problems is with education game business simulation genre. Chocorillo: The Lost Recipes is an educational game that teaches the business of business learning, especially concerning supply chain management which is packed with gameplay that is fun and exciting game story. This game there are 29 characters that the player can interact with them, doing quests from them, and resolve social problems that occur. The creation of this work is expected to generate business educational game that can provide learning effects without compromising the beauty aspect of the graphics so players do not get bored easily in use.Keywords: Android, game edukasi, bisnis, unity, supply chain management. AbstrakPenerapan pendidikan bisnis dalam dunia pendidikan merupakan hal yang sangat penting. Akan tetapi, banyaknya teori dan sifat pengajaran yang monoton menyebabkan pengetahuan akan bisnis sulit untuk dipahami dengan baik. Dengan demikian, untuk memperkenalkan supply chain management sebagai proses bisnis suatu perusahaan, dibutuhkan sebuah metode pembelajaran yang lebih inovatif dan kreatif serta mengedepankan praktik dalam bisnis. Salah satu metode pengajaran yang dapat menjawab permasalahan tersebut adalah dengan game edukasi bisnis bergenre simulasi. Chocorillo: The Lost Recipes merupakan game edukasi bisnis yang mengajarkan pembelajaran bisnis khususnya tentang supply chain management yang dikemas dengan gameplay yang menyenangkan dan game story yang menarik. Game ini terdapat 29 karakter yang pemain dapat berinteraksi dengan mereka, mengerjakan quest dari mereka, dan menyelesaikan permasalahan sosial yang terjadi. Penciptaan karya ini diharapkan dapat menghasilkan game edukasi bisnis yang dapat memberikan efek pembelajaran tanpa mengurangi aspek keindahan grafis sehingga pemain tidak mudah bosan dalam menggunakannya.Kata kunci: Android, game edukasi, bisnis, unity, supply chain management

The supplier selection process has become an important area of research and professional activity, and it is fundamental to understand the types and trends of research in this field. The appropriate supplier selection decision is a fundamental strategic process and plays an important role in supply chain management. In the last decade, academic research on sustainability has evolved rapidly in the supply chain literature. However, there has been scant opportunity for the research community to complete a global assessment of sustainable supplier selection activities to date. This paper seeks to address this need by exploring sustainability in supply chain management, developing a sustainable supplier selection framework with a tool for its operationalization to help managers evaluate supplier selection decisions. Our proposed model is based on the TOPSIS concept as a multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) model and is validated through a case study. This research work follows the best-in-class approach to comply with all applicable environmental regulations and laws in the supplier selection process.

PurposeSmall and medium enterprises (SMEs) of Indian clothing industry have become one of the most important cogs of global fashion supply chain. However, the implementation of green practices is still in the nascent stage. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the important barriers of green supply chain management in Indian clothing SMEs.Design/methodology/approachA total of 36 barriers related to green supply chain management (GSCM) practices were identified through exhaustive literature review. Then ten important barriers were shortlisted through questionnaire survey among supply chain practitioners using five-point Likert scale. Finally, interpretive structural modeling technique was used to decipher the contextual relationships among these barriers.FindingsComplexity of green process and system design and lack of support from regulatory authorities were found to be the barriers having the maximum driving power. Lack of consumer support and high investment and low economic benefits were also found to be important barriers in the way of green practices implementation in clothing SMEs. In contrast, lack of reward systems for suppliers, uncertainty of green outcome, lack of green materials, process and technology and lack of flexibility to switch over to green system were the dependent barriers.Originality/valueThe important barriers of GSCM practices in Indian clothing SMEs have been identified and analyzed. The finding will be helpful in making the Indian clothing SMEs environmentally sustainable by eliminating the important barriers.
