Moodle-Based Tool to Improve Teaching and Learning of Relational Databases Design and SQL DML Queries

The challenge to prepare the graduates for working in a constantly changing environment like software engineering requires an effective learning framework. This chapter presents a tool, integrated in the Moodle learning management system, that allows students to train the process of designing relational databases. The tool also allows them to practice with SQL queries that are executed over relational databases previously designed. This chapter also describes the result of a qualitative analysis of its use in an engineering course offered at the University of Valladolid and focused on the teaching of the Web applications development. The results of the refereed study reveal that the tool was found useful by both students and teachers to support the teaching and learning process of relational databases.

This chapter presents two educational Web (PHP and JavaScript) programming validators integrated into the learning management system Moodle to improve the teaching-learning process. These applications also offer the students an appropriate explanation of the errors found and some information about the language key terms, suggest alternatives to possibly misspelled terms, and gather usage data to provide both student and teacher statistical graphics of the type of error committed. The chapter also describes the result of a qualitative analysis of its use in several telecommunications engineering courses offered at the University of Valladolid.

This research was conducted at the research object that is engaged in educational services is one of the universities in Jakarta, where do research on features or design variables and the variable satisfaction language on the web that support the teaching and learning process at the college. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that affect the learning process on the web, as reference material consideration for the leadership of the university in the policy -making to improve the quality quality teaching and learning process. The method used is literature and literature study, questionnaires to the users who use the web are faculty and students, interviews, data processing method with SPSS and Likert scale. The conclusions resulting from this research is the design and navigation of the questionnaire distributed to faculty and students in the first semesterof 2013/2014 with the hypothesis Ho: no effect, Ha: no effect, in which the basic decision making sig. > then Ho isα= accepted , sig . < then Ho is rejected, the decision sig. = 0.00 then 0.00α < 0.05 then there is the influence of language and design variable to variable satisfaction.

The challenge of teaching programming languages and paradigms is a very complex task that requires of adequate strategies and educational tools. This chapter presents a game-based educational tool, Trivioodle, developed and used to support the teaching and learning of programming languages and paradigms. Trivioodle is integrated into the learning management system Moodle that is used as educational eLearning platform by the University of Valladolid. The chapter describes the mechanics in playing Trivioodle. The chapter also describes the result of a qualitative analysis of its use in two engineering courses related to programming offered to students in two different study programs at the University of Valladolid.

<em>This study intended to describe how the process of teaching and learning using WebQuest can develop the ninth graders’ writing ability of report text. The subjects included the 15 ninth graders. The students were taught to be able to write report texts by using WebQuest after they visit the web addresses given in the two cycles of classroom action research. Their writing ability achievement and the information on students’ interaction during the teaching and learning process were attained by overseeing writing products at the end of each cycle and by using observation checklists and field notes. The result indicated that WebQuest was successful in developing the students’ writing ability of report texts. The comparison of the students’ scores in the preliminary study and in Cycle 2 was significantly developed. In preliminary study, the students’ average score was 50.8. While in the cycle two, the students’ score was 76.8.</em>

Task-Based Learning (TBL) is one of the contemporary approaches, which has attracted a great deal of study in recent decades. It is a language education approach that offers students the opportunity to use authentic target language use by tasks. Task-Based Learning drives skill-based teaching and learning, engages students in the learning process, motivates and enhances student imagination. This paper focuses on some fundamental aspects of TBL in literature: (1) the task-based learning definition, (2) the task-based learning characteristics, (3) the task-based learning framework, (4) the task-based learning benefits, and (5) a proposed task-based learning practice for EFL learners. The paper gives useful suggestions to EFL teachers who have similar teaching strategies to help students meet such learning goals in their classrooms and continue positive TBL patterns in teaching and learning.

The Web is a crucial means for the dissemination of touristic information. However, most touristic information resources are stored directly in Web pages or in relational databases that are accessible through ad-hoc Web applications, and the use of automated processes to search, extract and interpret information can hardly be implemented. The Semantic Web technologies, aiming at representing the background knowledge about Web resources in a computational way, can be an important contribution to the development of such automated processes. This chapter introduces the concept of touristic object, giving special attention to the representation of temporal, spatial, and thematic knowledge. It also proposes a three-layered architecture for the representation of touristic objects in the Web. The central part is the domain layer, defining a Semantic Model for Tourism (SeMoT) to describe concepts, relationships, and constraints using ontologies. The data layer supports the mapping of touristic information in relational databases into Resource Description Framework (RDF) virtual graphs following the SeMoT specification. The application layer deals with the integration of information from different data sources into a unified knowledge model, offering a common vocabulary to describe touristic information resources. Finally, we also show how to use this framework for planning touristic itineraries.

Universiti Putra Malaysia’s (UPM) vision is to become a university with international repute. The Strategic Plan Document 2001- 2010 includes a goal for the university to be fully wired through ICT in enhancing research, extension work, professional service, strengthening teaching and learning environment and enhancing the culture of ICT in supporting teaching and learning. Two strategies were drawn; namely (i) implement the use of one learning management system (LMS) and (ii) enhance competency of academic staff in using the LMS. It has been a practice that each faculty decides on a platform for implementing e-Learning. However, the use of various LMSs had created difficulties in the sharing of integrated database, continuous monitoring of the effectiveness of the e-Learning system, and depository of e-Learning resources in the UPM’s knowledge repository. This paper reports on UPM’s experience in adapting the use of LMS from the early 1990s until today.

This chapter approaches the problematic of communication in teaching-learning activities in higher education during the crisis generated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors have proposed to present a theoretical and practical approach to the effective communication in teaching, with the objective of knowing which are the opinions of students on communication skills and motivation of them in the classroom. The study included a total of 261 students from different faculties at the University of Bucharest, who were a Likert-scale survey in the period May -July 2020. Results of the analysis of research data shows that students have seen their ability to concentrate and motivation to perform tasks affected, but they did not leave university. In this respect, most difficulties were in carrying out teamwork than individual. The adaptations made by the university during confinement have been positively appreciated. The research findings coming according to recent studies confirm that without communication the teaching and learning process will not take place.
