Designing a State-of-the-Art High School in Suzhou, China

Globalization, migration, transnational movements, and new economies have led educational leaders worldwide to view schools as key venues to develop global competence in working and learning with people from different cultures. With this global trend as a context, a state-of-the-art high school was created in Suzhou, China through a public-private partnership. Additionally, the school leaders invited North Carolina State University to be the creative partner for the school. This chapter traces the development of the new educational facility, the innovative curriculum embracing the best of Chinese and American education, and the successes and ongoing challenges that the members of the collaborative partnership experience.

Buku ini merupakan himpunan 155 puisi hasil karya Sasterawan Negara, Muhammad Haji Salleh. Muhammad Haji Salleh dilahirkan pada 26 mac 1942 di Taiping, Perak Darul Ridzuan. Mendapat pendidikan awal di High School Bukit Mertajam dan Maktab Melayu Kuala Kangsar. Kemudian melanjutkan pelajaran ke Malayan Teachers College, Brinsford Lodge, England. Memperoleh Ijazah Sarjana Muda Sastera di Universiti Malaya (Singapura), Ijazah Sarjana Sastera dari Universiti Malaya dalam tahun 1970 dan Ijazah Doktor Falsafah dari Universiti Michigan, Amerika Syarikat dalam tahun 1973. Dalam tahun 1977, dilantik sebagai profesor tamu di bawah rancangan fulbright-hays dan mengajar di North Carolina State University, Raleigh, Amerika Syarikat.Muhammad Haji Salleh pernah bertugas sebagai pensyarah di Jabatan Persuratan Melayu dan dilantik sebagai Timbalan Dekan Fakulti Sains Kemasyarakatan dan Kemanusiaan, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Beliau juga pernah dilantik sebagai Pengarah Institut Bahasa, Kebudayaan Kesusasteraan Melayu, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Pada tahun 1978, beliau dilantik menjadi profesor kesusasteraan ketika berusia 36 tahun. Pada tahun 1977-1978, Muhammad menjadi profesor pelawat, di North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina, Amerika Syarikat dan menjadi asian scholar in residence di University Michigan. Dalam tahun 1992-1993, beliau dipilih menjadi Fullbright Visiting Reseacher, di University of California, Berkeley dan seterusnya menyandang kerusi pengajian melayu di Universiti Leiden, Netherlands, dari tahun 1993 1994.Ketokohan Muhammad Haji Salleh dalam dunia penulisan puisi melayu moden mendapat pengiktirafan apabila telah terpilih menjadi Sasterawan Negara dalam tahun 1991 dan menerima anugerah S.E.A. Write Award di Bangkok dalam tahun 1997.

Abstract Additional active ingredients are needed for use in aquatic systems in order to respond to new threats or treatment scenarios, enhance selectivity, reduce use rates, and to mitigate the risk of herbicide-resistance. Florpyrauxifen-benzyl is a new synthetic auxin developed for use as an aquatic herbicide. A study was conducted at North Carolina State University, in which 10 µg L−1 of 25% radiolabeled florpyrauxifen-benzyl was applied to the isolated shoot tissue of ten different aquatic plant species in order to elucidate absorption and translocation patterns in these species. Extremely high levels of shoot absorption were observed for all species and uptake was rapid. Highest shoot absorptions were observed for crested floatingheart [Nymphoides cristata (Roxb.) Kuntze] (A192 =20 µg g−1), dioecious hydrilla [Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle] (A192 =25.3 µg g−1), variable watermilfoil (Myriophyllum heterophylum Michx.) (A192 =40.1 µg g−1) and Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L.) (A192 =25.3 µg g−1). Evidence of translocation was observed in all rooted species tested with the greatest translocation observed in N. cristata (1.28 µg g-1 at 192 HAT). The results of this study add to the growing body of knowledge surrounding the behavior of this newly registered herbicide within aquatic plants.

In recent years, many horticulture departments around the United States have been concerned with recruiting and retaining an adequate number of students. One potential recruitment opportunity is the horticulture Future Farmers of America (FFA) Career Development Events (CDEs). For the time period of 1999 to 2012 (14 years), 1462 students participated in the annual state-level horticulture contests, comprising floriculture and nursery/landscape CDEs, held at Kansas State University (KSU). Using the rosters from these two CDEs, we referenced the university’s student information database to determine whether the high school students who participated as FFA horticulture CDE contestants ultimately matriculated to KSU. Fifty-two percent of former FFA horticulture CDE participants were accepted to KSU and 32% matriculated. Of these, 58% enrolled in the College of Agriculture and 19% majored in horticulture. Therefore, 3.5% of total horticulture CDE participants majored in horticulture at KSU. Students who participated in more than one horticulture CDE over time were more likely to major in horticulture at KSU compared with students who competed only once. Thirty-nine percent of students who participated in both horticulture CDEs pursued a baccalaureate program in horticulture. These two student characteristics could be used as indicator data points to target recruitment of future horticulture students. Data about the high school programs that generated contest participants were also summarized. Exceling in the CDE contests was not an indicator CDE participants would pursue a baccalaureate degree in horticulture. These analyses suggest FFA CDEs have some potential to optimize student recruitment efforts.

Strong yellow-green (SYG) is one of the unassigned colors listed in the FHWA’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Fluorescent SYG is promising because it appears to be more conspicuous in low-light conditions than conventional yellow signing materials. FHWA has conducted an extensive evaluation of SYG used for signs that warn drivers of nonmotorized hazards. North Carolina State University conducted one of the largest evaluations of SYG signs. The evaluation consisted of three parts: a traffic conflict study, a laboratory study, and a survey of pedestrians and drivers. The survey assessed driver perceptions of SYG warning signs at midblock pedestrian crossings. The researchers conducted the survey at four locations, which differed in pedestrian activities and saturation of pedestrian crossing signs. The study found that respondents thought that the SYG signs were more conspicuous, induced greater alertness in road users, and had a stronger association with caution. The respondents indicated that the aesthetic impact of the signs on the surroundings was no worse than that of standard yellow signs, and they generally recommended the use of SYG signs even when they were informed that the costs may be higher. The researchers also found that increases in travel frequency through the area in which the SYG signs were installed and increases in driving through that area in poor light conditions increased a respondent’s chances for noticing the SYG signs. Women and drivers between the ages of 36 and 45 generally gave SYG signs higher ratings than did other drivers. The results of this survey are described.

Nowhere in the world have tree improvement and silviculture had a bigger impact on forest productivity and value to landowners than in the southern US. The economic impact from almost 60 years of tree improvement in the southern United States has been staggering. For example, over 300,000 hectares are planted each year with seedlings from the breeding efforts with loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) by members and staff of the North Carolina State University Cooperative Tree Improvement Program. The present value of continued genetic gains from traditional tree improvement efforts is estimated to be $2.5 billion USD to landowners and citizens in the southern US.
