In this chapter, the authors propose a novel e-learning system, dedicated strictly to knowledge assessment tasks. In its functioning it utilizes web-based technologies, but its design differs radically from currently popular e-learning solutions which rely mostly on thin-client architecture. The authors’ research proved that such architecture, while well suited for didactic content distribution systems is ill-suited for knowledge assessment products. In their design, they employed loosely-tied distributed system architecture, strict modularity, test and simulation-based knowledge and skill assessment and an our original communications package called Communication Abstraction Layer (ComAL), specifically designed to support communication functions of e-learning systems in diverse network conditions (including offline environment and content aware networks).The system was tested in production environment on Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, Technical University of Gdansk with great success, reducing staff workload and increasing efficiency of didactic process. The tests also showed system’s versatility in classroom, remote and blended learning environments.

Data mining is the concept for extracting the appropriate data from the large set of database. In today’s world it is widely used for many applications where learning applications is one of the major part. The e-Learning is the booming technology where anyone can learn everything from any part of the world. It is the digital way of learning the concepts and does not require the help of other persons to do so. It also requires the large space for data storage such as user information, course records and course details and so on. There are lot of learning applications available on the internet among which some might be subjected to frauds. So the security is the demanding thing every users looking for to protect their details. The users also seek for flexibility of using the applications. In perspective of distributed world, the complexity and interoperability of the data brings challenges in e-learning domain.Depends upon learner’s choice, the web based learning modules were developed for the students. Thus, a holistic approach is required for achieving the personalized content since the student groups are heterogeneous in nature. In addition to, the personalized content has to be protected in order to maintain the data integrity and privacy of the users. In this work, we survey about the present scenario of the web-based e-learning systems. Initially, we present the services oriented architecture of the e-learning systems and also clearly explain the different elearning layers.Then, we portray the existing studies processed in web based e-learning systems. Finally, we discuss about the challenges still persists in web-based learning systems. This paper will guide the upcoming researchers in e-learning fields.

Various researchers, institutions and companies have been increasingly working on and using e-learning systems in the past. However, with the recent developments, the demand for learning systems that can adapt to learners’ need and development level has risen considerably. A lot of learning from a distance requires new approaches in teaching, It is more important than ever for teachers to be able to accurately test students’ knowledge, determine the appropriate level of difficulty and adjust content accordingly. This paper describes the design, development and use of a web-based application used to prepare tests for students and determine their level as a module of an integrated personalized learning system. Results from a practical implementation of the system are also discussed.

In the last chapter, we discuss how advanced multimedia technologies are used in distance learning systems, including multimedia authoring and presentation, Web-based learning, virtual environments, interactive video, and systems on mobile devices. On the other hand, we believe pedagogic theory should be incorporated into the design of distance learning systems to add learning efficiency. Thus, we point out some suggestions to the designers of future distance learning systems.

The rapid growth of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)—specifically, the Internet—has given emergence to e-learning. Resultantly, web-based e-learning systems are being increasingly developed to enhance the learning process. However, the utilization of such systems is low, mainly owing to poor quality content and overall design problems. To improve usage, it is imperative to identify the factors with the most significant impact on the quality of these systems so that the e-learning industry keeps these factors in consideration while developing e-learning systems. This study focused on the identification and prioritization of factors related to the design quality of e-learning systems through a hierarchical quality model. Thus, firstly, an extensive literature review was conducted to identify the factors that most affect the quality of web-based e-learning systems. Secondly, among the identified factors, only those with the most significant effect were considered. To identify the most important quality criteria, a survey was conducted. An instrument was deployed among 157 subjects, including e-learning designers, developers, students, teachers, and educational administrators. Finally, a second instrument was distributed among 51 participants to make a pairwise comparison among the criteria and rank them according to their relative importance. The identified and prioritized factors were classified into four main categories. Among these four factors, content was identified as the most important factor, whereas design was found to be the least important factor.

The demand for e-learning systems in both academic and non-academic organizations has increased the need to improve security against impersonation fraud. Although there are a number of studies focused on securing Web-based systems from Information Systems (IS) misuse, research has recognized the importance of identifying suitable levels of authenticating strength for various activities. In e-learning systems, it is evident that due to the variation in authentication strength among controls, a ‘one size fits all’ solution is not suitable for securing diverse e-learning activities against impersonation fraud. The focus of this exploratory study was to investigate what levels of authentication strength users perceive to be most suitable for activities in e-learning systems against impersonation fraud and aimed to assess if the ‘one size fits all’ approach that is mainly used is valid when it comes to securing e-learning activities from impersonation fraud. A sample of 1,070 e-learners was analyzed using descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis to uncover suitable levels of authentication strength to secure elearning activities against impersonation fraud. The findings determined that there is a specific set of e-learning activities that have high potential for impersonation and need a moderate to high level of authentication strength to reduce the threat.
