Developing and Managing an Effective Virtual Campus

This chapter presents a successful Swiss experience in developing and effectively managing virtual campus projects: eLab, the eLearning Laboratory of the University of Lugano and the University of Applied Sciences of Italian Switzerland. eLab activities are presented at two distinct moments in time. We first describe the context of e-learning in Swiss higher education institutions, focusing in particular on the Swiss Virtual Campus programme. During that programme, eLab emerged as one of the best performing e-learning support centres in Switzerland, thanks to three main elements: the establishment of a clear prototype-based design and development model, the definition of quality control procedures, and the implementation of a consistent and institution-wide online learning environment. After the end of the programme, eLab had to switch from a project-oriented laboratory towards a service unit. The general strategy that drove this change and the concrete tools and practices that made it possible are presented in this chapter.

Thanks to easier operability and a growing range of functions, open source products are increasingly being used in teaching GIS to students of various course programs. The elaboration of such courses poses the challenge of taking into account different study paths, allowing for student autonomy (e-learning), and choosing the right software. The article suggests answers to these questions by presenting the classes offered at the University of Applied Sciences in Deggendorf and the University of Passau since winter 2010/11 as well as ideas for future course offers.

Purpose: In the context of training health professionals in Switzerland in evidence-based practice, the preconceptions of active researchers might be playing a major role in the development of research methodologies within allied health and nursing professions (AHNP). The objective of this study was to identify the preconceptions (understanding of the meaning of clinical research) of researchers in AHNP at the Health Schools of the University of Applied Sciences, Western Switzerland (UASWS). Emerging theories were then discussed and challenged with available literature and participant profiles. Method: Anonymous semi-directed interviews of 20 researchers (internal and external to the university) arising from various professions, including medical and non-AHNP, were conducted between 2007 and 2008. Results: Preconceptions were grouped into eight categories that were used by 64% of participants (SD 21.8), indicating that the categories worked well in evoking participants’ preconceptions. Categories of themes covering the dimensions of clinical research definition are limits, aim, fields of professional application, professional identity, education, sensitivity of term, associated images, and relevance of a definition. Conclusion: Nurses appear to have specific preconceptions about clinical research. Due to their dominance in terms of number of professionals, they play a determining role in the development of research in AHNP in Switzerland. Researchers in the health division of the UASWS are suffering from a lack of access to experimental research and training in Switzerland. The methodological background experience of researchers seems to play a role in the understanding of clinical research, as from the available results researchers with an experimental background seem to have a larger definition of clinical research. Recommendation: authors recommend the use of the term “patient oriented clinical research” for AHNP when talking about CR.

<p>The application of Building Information Modeling is based on the definition of basic classifications to create a clear data structure in which specific parameters can be defined. In building construction, such basic classifications are already in use. However, there are no standardized definitions of the data basis concerning the transport infrastructure stock. Therefore, a data structure is needed to capture all planes of design, construction, and maintenance. In the course of this work, a BIM data structure was developed together with Austrian infrastructure owners –Austrian Federal Railways and Highways Agency. Within the research group, the University of Applied Sciences “FH Campus Wien”, Vienna, was responsible for the topic of bridges and bridge maintenance. A consistent data structure is the basis for BIM implementation in infrastructure engineering. The potentials range from the use of BIM models for static calculations to their application in maintenance management.</p>

This article explores the transition in course delivery from a paper-based format to blended learning, and highlights the role of the virtual learning environment (VLE) in this process. Professional practice in postgraduate programmes in particular is investigated during this transition stage at the University of Dundee (UoD) in Scotland, and the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien (UASTW) in Austria. In this transition, UoD is developing and implementing a ‘Master's Framework’ supported by the VLE, ‘MyDundee’, which is built on the Blackboard e-learning platform. Similarly, UASTW is exploiting the Campus Information System (CIS) based on the open-source e-learning platform Moodle. Although the methods used to promote and practise e-learning differ at the two universities, their common aim is to support students' and professionals' learning when face-to-face contact time between students and tutors is significantly reduced. The use of collaborative and peer-assessed tools like e-portfolios, newsletters, discussion forums, Wikis and group puzzles are used as means of satisfying a delivery model which reflects socially constructivist principles of learning.

The family-friendly university audit (“audit familiengerechte hochschule”) is studied. The audit is available to German universities in order to support a familyfriendly working environment. Practices of an auditor coordinating several workshops for rectorate, HR department and functionaries, as well as representatives of all university groups are considered. The experience of the auditing at the University of Applied Sciences – Public Administration and Finance, Ludwigsburg is analyzed.

Nothing has highlighted the importance of digital teaching and learning opportunities more obviously than the Corona pandemic. This book therefore focuses on multicodal or multimedia digital teaching. The authors examine it from various perspectives and make suggestions for successful didactic implementation. In addition to general topics of digital teaching, they devote particular attention to visual literacy, which plays a special role in multimedia teaching. Criticism of teachers' lack of digital skills alone will not lead to success. Therefore, ways are shown here how these skills can be acquired. Tips and concrete examples for suitable apps, serious games, and online training courses round off the volume. Christina Maria Ersch is a staff member/DaF coordinator at the International Office of the University of Applied Sciences Mainz and lecturer at the University of Mainz. Her research interests lie in (university) didactics, especially in the implementation of competence orientation and digitalization of teaching of teaching, intercultural communication, and the influence of emotions in of emotions in (foreign language) teaching. Dr. Marion Grein is head of the Master's program DaF/DaZ at the the University of Mainz. Her work focuses on language teaching research (neurodidactics), intercultural communication, and digital teaching.

Norwegian and Scandinavian languages in general have grown quite popular among Polish students in recent years and more and more Polish universities are trying to offer Bachelor’s and even Master’s programmes in a Scandinavian language. Based on experience as a teacher of a Norwegian grammar course at the University of Szczecin and as a teacher of grammar at the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences which in 2016/2017 hosted around twenty Erasmus+ students from Szczecin, some of the challenges for Polish students of academic Norwegian will be reflected upon, as well as some of the challenges for a teacher of Norwegian who has very little knowledge of Polish. The main purpose of this paper will be to argue for the importance of grammar skills in language education and especially in language teacher education. This study is a contribution to the Educational Role of Language network.

ETH World is a strategic initiative for establishing a new virtual campus at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. ETH World will provide services in the areas of research, teaching, learning and infrastructure for the established disciplines in technology and natural science at ETH. The initiative aims to develop the excellence of ETH Zurich, making use of the new facilities and infrastructure instruments and methods that technological development offers. It is an integral part of the university, supporting its academic planning, infrastructure and financing processes. In its first part this paper describes the background of ETH World and an international conceptual competition organized in 2000 to seek ideas for the “infostructure” of this new academic environment. Some results of the competition are presented along with other projects that have been launched as building blocks of ETH World. The second part looks in some detail at e-learning as one of the focal points of ETH World, presenting two cases studies in architecture and control engineering education.
