Marketing Library and Information Services for Effective Utilization of Available Resources

Marketing of information products and services is very vital in the present information society. Of late, marketing of information services has emerged as an indispensable tool in the library and information service industry. In the light of this, this study examines possible ways of marketing information services by the 21st century information professionals for effective utilization of resources by the clients. This chapter looks at the following: the strategies already in place, the competencies needed by information professionals in the digital era, and methodologies that can be adopted for marketing information services available to libraries and information centres in the future.

O desenvolvimento e popularização das redes de informação e o potencial acesso de dados por um número cada vez mais amplo de indivíduos, apresenta um desafio ao information broker, do qual se exigirá um alto grau de criatividade e de resposta qualitativa às demandas de informação de indivíduos e grupos. Abstract It describes the information broker's activities as a professional in the information society. It presents an historical approach as well as it's academic formation and functions concerning information products and services which have value-added. In order to choose correctly this sort of professional, employers must decide under specific criteria, foreseeing the complexity involved on this kind of consultant job. Information brokers must be aware about the changes in the process of seeking information, that already put them under pressure, in order to offer new, qualitative and creative information products and services, oriented to save time and money from their clients. O desenvolvimento e a inovação na atuação do bibliotecário é condição para sobrevivência e crescimento do segmento ao qual este profissional está vinculado. O ambiente digital/virtual ampliou a possibilidade de oferta e diversidade dos serviços e produtos de informação, devido a esse fato os profissionais da informação precisam de subsídios – fontes de informação e agentes de inovação – para obterem aportes que lhes permitam exercer suas atividades em sintonia com as tecnologias e com o espaço no qual estão inseridos. Este estudo investigará os recursos que possibilitam ao profissional bibliotecário inovar. Para tanto, será elaborado e aplicado um questionário para os profissionais bibliotecários que mantêm serviços e produtos de informação com recursos da Web 2.0. Os resultados contribuirão para despertar os profissionais para a inovação como fonte de ampliação e fortalecimento da profissão.AbstractThe development and innovation in Librarian action is necessary for survival and growth of the segment to which this professional is bound. With the high development of knowledge-based economy, information service industry plays an important role in driving economic transition. We use stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) method to estimate the technical efficiency in seven cities of Zhejiang Province in China. We find that the average technical efficiency of information services industry is high and have different developed trends among the cities. The human capital、industrial concentration degree, openness and urbanization have significant impact on technical efficiency, while government behaviors do not show significant effect.

As an emerging industry of strategic importance, the development of information service industry has been compelling. By analyzing the development process of the information services industry in the past decade, we can learn that the information service is in warm now. Through establishing an ARMIA model, this study draw conclusion that the industry development index will rise steadily and slowly in 2014. The findings can help government, investors, consumer get a close understanding of the Information Service Industry and take it as a basis for decision making.

Safe academic services are the most important part of universities. The security of academic services is very important to maintain information optimally and safely. Along with the development of technology, academic information services are often misused by some irresponsible parties that can cause threats. To prevent these things from happening, it is necessary to know the extent of governance of higher education academic information system security by evaluating. So the research was conducted to determine the maturity of the security of Higher Education academic information service security by using the COBIT 5 framework in the DSS05 domain. The DSS05 domain in COBIT 5 is a good framework for use in implementing and evaluating the security of academic information services. Meanwhile, to determine the achievement of the evaluation of the security level of academic information systems, the Indonesian e-government ranking (PEGI) method is required. The combination of the COBIT 5 framework in the DSS05 domain using the PEGI method in academic information security service is able to provide a level of achievement in the form of Customer Value. The results of the COBIT 5 framework analysis of the DSS05 domain using the PEGI method get a score of 3.50 so that the quality of academic information service security evaluation achievement is at a very good level. At this level, universities are increasingly open to technological development. Higher education has applied the concept of quantification in every process, and has always been monitored and controlled for its performance in the security of academic information systems.

Purpose Copyright law supposedly brings a balance between copyright owners and information users as a way of creating a harmonious relationship. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between Kenya’s Copyright Act and the provision of information services in public university libraries in Kenya. Design/methodology/approach The study was informed by both the organization theory and the social systems theory which, respectively, provided a base for discussion on the library and its basic functions, and an interdisciplinary approach that accommodate library services and law. Data were collected from a sample of 77 librarians from public universities libraries, and analyzed using the qualitative method. Findings The study established that librarians were reasonably aware of the copyright Act. However, they were apprehensive and uncertain about copyright effect on the library. Evidence from the study showed that librarians needed to extend their knowledge and understanding of the copyright law for the effective provision of information services. The paper concludes that there is scope for librarians, using their wealth of knowledge and expertise, to make relevant and useful suggestions on copyright. Such contribution would assist in bringing harmony in the use of copyrighted materials. Originality/value These findings are original and will be useful in giving general direction on copyright. The study highlights the important issue of universities as parent institutions providing needed leadership in the copyright area.

Approximately 100 Intellectual Property Information Services Centres have been established in Chinese university libraries, more than 80% of them since 2017. The context of this boom in Intellectual Property Information Services Centres is the rapidly increasing number of patent applications in China, as well as an unacceptably low transfer ratio. Do Intellectual Property Information Services Centres represent a promising direction for university library transformation? This is the central issue addressed in this article. The characteristics of the Chinese evolutionary path and driving forces are discussed, and distinctive intellectual property information service practices are studied and summarized. Comparisons are made with the USA, the UK, Europe and India. With Intellectual Property Information Services Centres, university libraries can evolve from information providers to innovation catalysts, and establish closer connections between universities, communities and industries. The impacts of Intellectual Property Information Services Centres on university librarianship are multifaceted. The trends and challenges of intellectual property information services are also discussed in the article.
