Many communities have been concerned with the problem of bringing more girls to technology and science related areas. The authors believe that the first step in order to solve such a problem is to understand the current situation, like to investigate the “state-of-the-art” of the problem. Therefore, in this chapter, they present the first study to identify which areas of Computer Science have more and less feminine participation. In order to do so, they have considered the program committees of the Brazilian conferences in those areas. The authors’ study evaluates the 2008 and previous editions of such conferences. They also discuss some Brazilian initiatives to bring more girls to Computer Science as well present what else can be done.

The rise of online commerce has led to an emerging discipline at the intersection of economics and computer science, a discipline which studies the properties and dynamics of automated trading in online marketplaces. The CAT Market Design Tournament was created to promote research into the design and deployment of economic mechanisms for such online marketplaces, particularly mechanisms able to adapt automatically to dynamic competitive environments. This research competition, which ran from 2007 to 2011), was won by four different teams and had entrants from thirteen countries. This chapter describes the motivation and history of the tournament and presents research that has arisen from it. The winners were experimentally “played off” to evaluate whether the state of the art in automated mechanism design improved during the CAT competition. The results show a clear and consistent improvement, supporting the belief that the competition has encouraged research in the field.

AbstractThe answer determines the success of a Question-Answering (QA) system. In redundancy-based QA systems, a common approach is to extract the candidate answers from the information sources and select the most frequent answers as the final answers. However, this strategy has some pitfalls. For instance, if a system is not able to detect equivalences between the candidate answers, their frequencies might be erroneously calculated. Moreover, the user who posed the question should also be taken into account when answering: different persons require different (correct) answers. This can involve the use of suitable vocabulary and/or information details. In these situations, the generation of a response can be a more suitable strategy, instead of the extraction and direct retrieval of the answer from the information sources. The present survey targets the state of the art in the answering task in QA under three different lines of research. First, we present several works that focus on relating candidate answers. Then, we recover the concept of cooperative answer – a correct, useful, and non-misleading answer – and we bring up attempts to address cooperative answering. Finally, we investigate the research community endeavors on response generation. We will also present our perspective on each of these three topics throughout this paper.

Chapter 13 gives an impression of the development of the relatively young AI and computer science fields in Europe and China and how the current situation has developed over the past twenty years, where European and Chinese researchers are equal colleagues on an international stage and where diplomatic relations between the USA and China on the international stage have consequences felt directly by European AI researchers in their labs. In what ways are AI researchers in China and Europe competitors with each other, for example in terms of the global shortage of trained AI researchers and practitioners? At the same time, the AI research community collaborates globally, so how can we ensure that the field continues to benefit from open international collaboration?

The research carried out in the water distribution networks is of great importance, given the social, environmental and economic impacts that have occurred due to the scarcity of water resources. Therefore, any scientific effort shown in research that studies water distribution systems is of great relevance. Techniques such as mathematical modeling, computer simulation and statistical methods are widely used in order to obtain more reliable answers, whether for the identification of the current situation of the network, as well as for the prediction of scenarios, failure events, increased demand, etc. The objective of this work is to carry out a bibliometric analysis to identify the state of the art of research that addresses the theme of water distribution networks for the control and reduction of the volume of water losses, which will serve as a guide for future works to to structure itself in the most relevant researches that study the theme. The developed methodology was able to analyze a metadata composed of 4188 documents taken from the Web of Science journals database. As a result, a geographical view of the theme was obtained, pointing out the main countries, affiliations, journals and researchers, as well as pointing out the main documents and relevance of the theme. It can be concluded after the results obtained that bibliometric analysis is an important tool for obtaining the state of the art. With it is possible to have a better understanding of the current situation in the development of research, familiarizing researchers with what is most current and relevant.

Spatial OLAP (SOLAP) systems are powerful GeoBusiness Intelligence tools for analysing massive volumes of geo-referenced datasets. Therefore, these technologies are receiving considerable attention in the research community and in the database industry as well. Applications of these technologies are current in several domains such as ad marketing, healthcare, and urban development, to name a few. Contrary to other application domains, in the context of agri-environmental data and analysis, SOLAP systems have been underexploited. Therefore, in this paper, the author makes an exhaustive survey of most of the published studies in the domain of the SOLAP analysis of agri-environmental data with an emphasis on the reasons why only few recent works investigate the use of SOLAP systems in the agri-environmental context. In particular, the author focuses on the complexity of the spatio-multidimensional model and its implementation. Moreover, based on surveying the state of the art in this domain, this paper identifies some general guidelines that must be considered by the scientific community to design and implement efficient SOLAP approaches to the analysis of geo-referenced agri-environmental datasets. Finally, open issues about warehousing and OLAPing agri-environmental data are also shown in the paper.

The paper describes the results of a study conducted in order to detect potential false friends in Management Science doctoral thesis summary translations in English and Latvian, as well as the actual cases when false friends have been found in the mentioned texts. In order to do so, the author has explored the existing literature and summarised the classifications of false friends offered in the state-of-the-art literature in Latvia and abroad. The types of semantic relationships for Latvian and English word pairs have been analysed, and finally, the cases of false friends existing in the translations of Management Science doctoral dissertation summaries defended during the period from 2013 to 2019 have been singled out. The present research has been carried out in order to facilitate the writing and translating of the dissertations in English and Latvian. In the Management Science doctoral thesis summary translations from Latvian into English as well as in the recommendations of the faculties and programmes, false friends have been detected. In the translations from English into Latvian, in turn, it has been found that linguists are not always of the same opinion in respect to the translation of terms, which might be explained by the fact that thorough research of the language of science in Latvia started a relatively short time ago, namely in the 1990s, and is being carried out in very few institutions. Given the presence of false friends detected in the already defended Management Science doctoral dissertation summaries, it can be concluded that the phenomenon of false friends needs to be researched further to help researchers and translators avoid them.

AUVs have proved their usefulness in recent years and continue to do so. This paper is a review of the current state of the art of AUVs. Present AUV capabilities are reviewed through a discussion of feasible present-day AUV missions. The state of key AUV design features and sensor technologies is also addressed, identifying those areas most critical to continued future progress in AUV development.

At least 20 cable-stayed bridges have been built over the last 30 years that cannot be classified under existing typologies for cable-stayed bridges. These structures represent two new types of cable-stayed bridges that we herein define as "under-deck cable-stayed bridges" and "combined cable-stayed bridges." The evolution of these new bridge types is explored through consideration of the different proposals and structures that have been built throughout this period, pointing out the innovations made in each of them. In this paper we propose a new classification system for bridges prestressed by means of tendons into which these two new bridge types will fit. Studies that have been made of these structural types are also highlighted. On the basis of the aforementioned, we describe the state-of-the-art for these structural types, compiling and cataloguing information, documents, and knowledge that were previously highly dispersed. Lastly, we make a critical analysis of the current situation and draw some key conclusions.Key words: under-deck cable-staying, combined cable-staying, cable-stayed bridges, extradosed prestressing, intradosed prestressing, prestressing.
