During the daily nursing practice, dangerous situations might appear that, if not recognized and treated early, can lead to fatigue and professional burnout, causing detrimental consequences for the patient's safety and the adequacy of the healthcare quality of the provider. This article aims to synthesize existing research investigating the association between burnout in healthcare professionals with the safety of patient care in the last decade. The authors herein examined specific nurse surveys that involve burnout assessment and association with clinical errors throughout nurse provided care. Results from this search indicate that patient safety culture must be cultivated towards nursing errors and burnout reduction. The prompt recognition of burnout signs is the critical parameter for nursing errors prevention and patient safety, in the long term. Nursing error management is oriented towards investigation of the burnout symptoms and exists as an integral and essential issue for nursing administration to ensure excellent and qualitative patient care.

Purpose Creating a culture of patient safety and developing a skilled workforce are major challenges for health managers. However, there is limited information to guide managers as to how patient safety culture can be improved. The purpose of this paper is to explore the concept of reflexivity and develop a model for magnifying the effect of patient safety culture and demonstrating a link to improved perceptions of quality of care. Design/methodology/approach This research employed a correlational case study design with empirical hypothesis testing of quantitative scores derived from validated survey items. Staff perceptions of patient safety, reflexivity and quality of patient care were obtained via a survey in 2015 and analysed using inferential statistics. The final sample included 227 health service staff from clinical and non-clinical designations working in a large Australian tertiary hospital and health service delivering acute and sub-acute health care. Findings Both patient safety culture and reflexivity are positively correlated with perceived quality of patient care at the p<0.01 level. The moderating role of reflexivity on the relationship between patient safety culture and quality of care outcomes was significant and positive at the p<0.005 level. Practical implications Improving reflexivity in a health workforce positively moderates the effect of patient safety culture on perceptions of patient quality of care. The role of reflexivity therefore has implications for future pre-professional curriculum content and post-graduate licencing and registration requirements. Originality/value Much has been published on reflection. This paper considers the role of reflexivity, a much less understood but equally important construct in the field of patient safety.

Introduction: Patient safety culture is believed to be the first step toward improvement in quality of health-care delivery which will impact patient satisfaction. Objective: To assess the effect of patient safety culture on patient satisfaction in radiodiagnostic practice. Method: Two validated questionnaires via Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture by Agency of Health Research and Quality and patient satisfaction questionnaire by Hays were administered to radiodiagnostic staff and patients who came for diagnostic care, respectively. These questionnaires were based on 5-point Likert scale. Questionnaires on patient safety culture and patient satisfaction were administered to 80 radiology health workers and 376 patients of radiology, respectively. Simple random sampling was used to enlist the participants for patient satisfaction while a population study was carried out to enlist patient safety culture participants. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 17. Results: Response rate for patient safety culture questionnaires was 94.6%, while that of patient satisfaction was 62.8%. Among the survey items of patient safety, teamwork has the highest positive response of 76.5%, while staffing has the least, 30%. Overall patient safety culture was 53.7%. The survey item with highest positive response in patient satisfaction survey was patient-provider relationship (80%), while service cost-effectiveness has the least of 59%. Overall patient satisfaction with radiological services was 72.6%. There is no correlation between patient safety culture and patient satisfaction. Conclusion: Even though there is an excellent level of patient satisfaction in this study, it is not related to the practice of patient safety culture in radiodiagnostic unit.

As a vital part of patient care delivery, patient safety culture contributes to the quality of care provided by nurses. Safe patient care is positively linked to the attitudes of nurses. This study aimed to assess the perception of nurses working in a newly established teaching hospital. A cross-sectional study involving 194 nurses from three different units was conducted by using a 24-item Hospital Survey of Patient Safety Culture. Data on gender, working unit, age, years of working, and attendance in workshops on patient safety were also collected. The majority of the nurses had a positive total score of patient safety culture. The lowest score was 76 (63%), and the highest score was 120 (96%). The awareness on patient safety culture significantly differed between gender, years of working, and working units. Post-hoc comparisons using Tukey’s HSD test yielded a significant difference between nurses from critical care units and those from medical and surgical units. The mean score and total positive score on awareness on patient safety culture of the former were higher than those of the latter. Overall, the majority of the staff nurses in International Islamic University Malaysia Medical Center had a positive total score on awareness on patient safety culture. Awareness on patient safety, which is considered crucial worldwide, should be enhanced to influence the development of a positive patient safety culture within hospitals. This implementation would directly develop high-quality care to patients and positively impact health organizations.Abstrak  Kesadaran Perawat terhadap Budaya Keselamatan Pasien di Rumah Sakit Universitas yang Baru Dibangun. Sebagai bagian penting dari pemberian perawatan pasien, budaya keselamatan pasien berkontribusi pada kualitas perawatan yang diberikan oleh perawat. Perawatan pasien yang aman secara positif terkait dengan sikap perawat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menilai persepsi perawat yang bekerja di rumah sakit pendidikan yang baru dibangun. Sebuah studi cross-sectional yang melibatkan 194 perawat dari tiga unit yang berbeda dilakukan dengan menggunakan Survei Rumah Sakit Budaya Keselamatan Pasien. Data tentang jenis kelamin, unit kerja, usia, tahun kerja, dan kehadiran dalam lokakarya tentang keselamatan pasien juga dikumpulkan. Mayoritas perawat memiliki skor total positif dari budaya keselamatan pasien. Skor terendah adalah 76 (63%), dan skor tertinggi adalah 120 (96%). Kesadaran tentang budaya keselamatan pasien berbeda secara signifikan antara jenis kelamin, tahun kerja, dan unit kerja. Perbandingan post-hoc menggunakan uji HSD Tukey menghasilkan perbedaan yang signifikan antara perawat dari unit perawatan kritis dan mereka dari unit medis dan bedah. Skor rata-rata dan skor total positif pada kesadaran tentang budaya keselamatan pasien dari yang pertama lebih tinggi daripada yang terakhir. Secara keseluruhan, mayoritas staf perawat di International Islamic University Malaysia Medical Center memiliki skor total positif pada kesadaran tentang budaya keselamatan pasien. Kesadaran akan keselamatan pasien, yang dianggap penting di seluruh dunia, harus ditingkatkan untuk memengaruhi perkembangan budaya keselamatan pasien yang positif di rumah sakit. A cross-sectional study was conducted on primary healthcare staff working at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology from August 2019 to April 2020. We aimed to assess healthcare staff members’ awareness on patient safety culture (PSC) using a self-administered Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture questionnaire (HSPSC). The overall PSC awareness was only 60.4%. 9 out of 12 PSC items were considered PSC strength dimensions. Areas with room for improvement include “Non-punitive Response to Errors” (50.7%), “Frequency of events reported” (41.2%), and “Organisational learning - continuous improvement” (67.8%). It is necessary to strengthen the quality of training on the safety of the entire staff, encourage communication and report on medical errors to improve the quality of health care.
