Currently, advanced technological hardware can offer mobile devices which fits in the hand with a capacity to consult documents at anytime and anywhere. Multiple user context constraints as well as mobile device capabilities may involve the adaptation of multimedia content. In this article, the authors propose a new graph-based method for adapting multimedia documents in complex situations. Each contextual situation could correspond to a physical handicap and therefore triggers an adaptation action using ontological reasoning. Consequently, when several contextual situations are identified, this leads to multiple disabilities and may give rise to inconsistency between triggered actions. Their method allows modeling relations between adaptation-actions to select the compatible triggerable ones. In order to evaluate the feasibility and the performance of their proposal, an experimental study has been made on some real scenarios. When tested and compared with some existing approaches, their proposal showed improvements according to various criteria.

This paper presents the experimental study of using phase change material in the cooling of the mobile devices. It investigates the thermal performance of transient charging and discharging of mobile devices in three different situations; making phone calls frequently, making long duration calls, and making occasional calls. The results show that mobile devices are heated up fastest during the long duration usage. Experiments are also conducted to determine the effect of fins and effect of orientation of the mobile device on its thermal performance.

The high usage of multimedia content in daily activities has put strains on the network operators as the transmitted content can lead to network congestion. In an effort to control and reduce the traffic, network operators have capped their billing plans. A capped billing plan may require the user to pay extra money when exceeding the quota, and this can result in undesirably high bills for the mobile users. A solution that has been shown to reduce the size of transmitted data and also addresses user needs in terms of billing cost was presented in Molnar and Muntean (2013a). This solution involves personalising the multimedia content based on the user attitude towards risk. It makes use of a model that assesses the user attitude towards risk by considering the user age, gender, and risk attitude self-assessment. The research presented in this chapter adds to the state of the art by presenting an improvement to the user risk attitude model (Molnar & Muntean, 2012) that takes into account the user context (e.g. whether the user uses the roaming service or not, the current data consumption) as well as the user input. The improved model may be used to provide a more accurate trade-off: quality vs. price (Molnar & Muntean, 2013a) and this leads to an increase in user satisfaction and better service quality.

This paper presents an approach to enhance users experience through the use of recommendations and social networks for on-the-fly (at runtime) adaptation of multimedia documents. This paper presents also CSSAP, a dynamic service selection and assembly tool based on new user profiles and community profiles defined as set of semantic metadata, which context, quality of service and quality of experience parameters. The tool is based on community-aware semantic services and offer architecture, with three layers (semantic query, community management and semantic services). The most innovative characteristic of the tool is that it profits from the potential of semantic representation techniques to express context constraints and community's interests, while they may be useful to generate and manage of complex dynamic adaptation process. This tool improves assembly of relevant adaptation services for communities inferred social influence from a Facebook as virtual P2P environment. The proposed approach has been validated through a prototype for mobiles user of multimedia contents exchanges. The goal is to improve assembly of potential adaptation services and the efficiency and effectiveness of the authors' approach.

With the development and diffusion of compact and portable mobile devices, users can use multimedia content such as music and movie on personal mobile devices, anytime and anywhere. However, even with the rapid development of mobile device technology, it is still not easy to search multimedia content or manage large volume of content in a mobile device with limited resources. To resolve these problems, an approach for recommending content on the server-side is one of the popular solutions. However, the recommendation in a server also leads to some problems like the scalability for a lot of users and the management of personal information. Therefore, this paper defines a personal content manager which acts between content providers (server) and mobile devices and proposes a method for recommending multimedia content in the personal content manager. For the recommendation based on user's personal characteristic and preference, this paper adopts and applies the DISC model which is verified in psychology field for classifying user's behavior pattern. The proposed recommendation method also includes an algorithm for reflecting dynamic environmental context. Through the implements and evaluation of a prototype system, this paper shows that the proposed method has acceptable performance for multimedia content recommendation.

Skyline queries may be used to filter interesting data from a broad range of data. A Skyline query selects those data that are the best according to multiple user-defined criteria. A special case of Skyline queries are the Spatial Skyline Queries (SSQ). SSQ allow users to express preferences on the closeness between a set of data points and a set of query points. We study the problem of answering SSQ in presence of changing data, i.e., data whose values regularly change over a period of time. In this chapter, it is proposed an algorithm to evaluate SSQ on changing data. The proposed algorithm is able to avoid recomputation of the whole Skyline with each update on the data. Also, the performance of the proposed algorithm against state-of-the-art algorithms was empirically studied. The experimental study shows that the proposed algorithm may become 3 times faster than state-of-the-art algorithms.
