State of the Art Recommendation Approaches

Recommender systems have been used successfully in order to deal with information overload problems in a wide variety of domains ranging from e-commerce, e-tourism, to e-learning. They typically predict the ratings of unseen items by a user and recommend the top N items based on user's profile. Moreover, the profile can be enriched further by using additional information such as contextual data, domain knowledge, and tagging information among others for improving the quality of recommendations. Traditional approaches have not been effective in exploiting these additional data sources. Hence, new techniques need to be developed for extracting and integrating them into the recommendation process. In this article, the authors present a survey on state of the art recommendation approaches their algorithms, issues and also provides further research directions for developing smart and intelligent recommender systems.

With the enormous amount of information circulating on the Web, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find the necessary and useful information quickly and efficiently. However, with the emergence of recommender systems in the 1990s, reducing information overload became easy. In the last few years, many recommender systems employ the collaborative filtering technology, which has been proven to be one of the most successful techniques in recommender systems. Nowadays, the latest generation of collaborative filtering methods still requires further improvements to make the recommendations more efficient and accurate. Therefore, the objective of this article is to propose a new effective recommender system for TED talks that first groups users according to their preferences, and then provides a powerful mechanism to improve the quality of recommendations for users. In this context, the authors used the Pearson Correlation Coefficient (PCC) method and TED talks to create the TED user-user matrix. Then, they used the k-means clustering method to group the same users in clusters and create a predictive model. Finally, they used this model to make relevant recommendations to other users. The experimental results on real dataset show that their approach significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of RMSE, precision, recall, and F1 scores.

Recommender systems are widely used to provide users with recommendations based on their preferences. With the ever-growing volume of information online, recommender systems have been a useful tool to overcome information overload. The utilization of recommender systems cannot be overstated, given its potential influence to ameliorate many over-choice challenges. There are many types of recommendation systems with different methodologies and concepts. Various applications have adopted recommendation systems, including e-commerce, healthcare, transportation, agriculture, and media. This paper provides the current landscape of recommender systems research and identifies directions in the field in various applications. This article provides an overview of the current state of the art in recommendation systems, their types, challenges, limitations, and business adoptions. To assess the quality of a recommendation system, qualitative evaluation metrics are discussed in the paper.

Coping with today’s unprecedented information overload problem necessitates the deployment of personalization services. Typical personalization approaches model user preferences and store them in user profiles, used to deliver personalized content. A traditional method for profile representation is the so called keyword-based representation, where the user interests are modelled using keywords which are selected from the contents of the items which the user has rated. Although, keyword based approaches are simple and are extensively used for profile representation they fail to represent semantic-based information, this information is lost during the pre-processing phase. Future trends in personalization systems necessitate more innovative personalization techniques that are able to capture rich semanticbased information during the representation, modelling and learning phases. In recent years ontologies (key concepts and along with their interrelationships) to express semantic-based information have been very popular in domain knowledge representation. The primary goal of this chapter is to present an overview of the state-of-the art techniques and methodologies which aim to integrate personalization technologies with semantic-based information.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to propose a sustainable quality assessment approach (model) for the e-learning systems keeping software perspective under consideration. E-learning is becoming mainstream due to its accessibility, state-of-the-art learning, training ease and cost effectiveness. However, the poor quality of e-learning systems is one of the major causes of several failures reported. Moreover, this arena lacks well-defined quality assessment measures. Hence, it is quite difficult to measure the overall quality of an e-learning system effectively. Design/methodology/approach A pragmatic mixed-model philosophy was adopted for this study. A systematic literature review was performed to identify existing e-learning quality models and frameworks. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with e-learning experts following empirical investigations to identify the crucial quality characteristics of e-learning systems. Various statistical tests like principal component analysis, logistic regression, chi-square and analysis of means were applied to analyze the empirical data. These led to an adequate set of quality indicators that can be used by higher education institutions to assure the quality of e-learning systems. Findings A sustainable quality assessment model for the information delivery in e-learning systems in software perspective has been proposed by exploring the state-of-the-art quality assessment/evaluation models and frameworks proposed for the e-learning systems. The proposed model can be used to assess and improve the process of information discovery and delivery of e-learning. Originality/value The results obtained led to conclude that very limited attention is given to the quality of e-learning tools despite the importance of quality and its effect on e-learning system adoption and promotion. Moreover, the identified models and frameworks do not adequately address quality of e-learning systems from a software perspective.

A significant problem of recommender systems is their inability to explain recommendations, resulting in turn in ineffective feedback from users and the inability to adapt to users’ preferences. We propose a hybrid method for calculating predicted ratings, built upon an item/aspect-based graph with users’ partially given ratings, that can be naturally used to provide explanations for recommendations, extracted from user-tailored Tripolar Argumentation Frameworks (TFs). We show that our method can be understood as a gradual semantics for TFs, exhibiting a desirable, albeit weak, property of balance. We also show experimentally that our method is competitive in generating correct predictions, compared with state-of-the-art methods, and illustrate how users can interact with the generated explanations to improve quality of recommendations.

The recent application of recommender systems for educational resources and e-learning has facilitated online and accessible education on social networks. However, there are currently few studies about the methods for evaluation and performance measurement of these recommender systems in the complicated environment of educational and social networking platforms. The purpose of this research paper is to investigate the effectiveness of using sentiment analysis methods for educational resources based on user comments and compare it with the quantitative approach based on user rating to recommend best open learning resources (OER) available through online OER repositories. The quality of the OER will be justified by comparing the user rating and the users' reviews. The quality of users' reviews is based on calculating the term frequency for selected positive and negative terms, then determining the similarity among the comments. Comments with positive or negative words confirm the high and low ratings respectively. Keywords: Open Education Resources, OER, Recommender Systems, Sentiment Analysis.

The use of artificially intelligent techniques to overcome specific shortcomings within e-learning systems is a well-researched area that keeps on evolving in an attempt to optimise such resourceful practices. The lack of personalization and the sentiment of isolation coupled with a feeling of being treated like all others, tends to discourage and push learners away from courses that are very well prepared academically and excellently projected intellectually. The use of recommender systems to deliver relevant information in a timely manner that is specifically differentiated to a unique learner is once more being investigated to alievate the e-learning issue of being impersonal.  The application of such a technique also assists the learner by reducing information overload and providing learning material that can be shared, criticized and reviewed at one’s own pace. In this paper we propose the use of a fully automated recommender system based on recent AI developments together with Web 2.0 applications and socially networked technologies. We argue that such technologies have provided the extra capabilities that were required to deliver a realistic and practical interfacing medium to assist online learners and take recommender systems to the next level.

Recommender systems have achieved success in a variety of domains, as a means to help users in information overload scenarios by proactively finding items or services on their behalf, taking into account or predicting their tastes, priorities, or goals. Challenging issues in their research agenda include the sparsity of user preference data and the lack of flexibility to incorporate contextual factors in the recommendation methods. To a significant extent, these issues can be related to a limited description and exploitation of the semantics underlying both user and item representations. The authors propose a three-fold knowledge representation, in which an explicit, semantic-rich domain knowledge space is incorporated between user and item spaces. The enhanced semantics support the development of contextualisation capabilities and enable performance improvements in recommendation methods. As a proof of concept and evaluation testbed, the approach is evaluated through its implementation in a news recommender system, in which it is tested with real users. In such scenario, semantic knowledge bases and item annotations are automatically produced from public sources.
