Exploring the Role of Service Quality and Knowledge for Mobile Health Services

The use of mobile technology-based services has made healthcare delivery more accessible and affordable in recent times. In fact, mobile health services today act as an effective means of providing healthcare knowledge to users directly from providers. However, the cynical behavior of users regarding this medium of healthcare services often encircles around the quality of such services. The aim of this paper is to examine the role of service quality and knowledge among other underlying factors that can influence future use intentions of m-Health services in the context of Bangladesh. The conceptual model of the study identifies that certain aspects of service qualities like reliability, privacy, responsiveness, empathy and information quality along with facilitating conditions, effort expectancy, performance expectancy and social influence plays an important role in capturing users' overall perceptions of mobile health services. Finally, the study highlights managerial implications, future research directions and limitations from the Bangladesh perspective.

Globally, the advancement of mobile technology and the growing number of mobile phone users has promoted the boom in mobile health services. The influence of mobile technology has, in fact, made healthcare delivery more accessible, affordable and effective today. Consumers are thus increasingly using mobile devices as health service delivery aids across various countries. However, questions remain as to how consumer traits like personal innovativeness and self-efficacy, financial costs related to the service delivery and demographics like age and gender may affect the usage and adoption of mobile health services, especially for emerging economies like Bangladesh. Conceptual model of the study identifies self-efficacy, facilitating conditions, effort expectancy and performance expectancy to be significant constructs that influences users' overall perceptions of mobile health services, along with moderating effects of both age and gender upon the selected factors. Finally, the study highlights managerial implications, future research directions and limitations.

Presently, mobile health (m-health) services is a dynamic example of the integration of information technology into healthcare service provisions. However, citizens are often concerned about the use of this medium. Their apprehensions mostly encircle the quality of such services and extent of their own healthcare knowledge. This chapter thus aims to investigate adoption drivers of m-health services in Bangladesh by employing the UTAUT model. Results reveal service qualities like reliability, privacy, responsiveness, empathy, and information quality along with facilitating conditions, effort expectancy, performance expectancy, and social influence as significant drivers in m-health service adoption. In addition, this chapter suggests a new research agenda wherein perceived risks can act as an additional construct. Several factors that are known to exacerbate perceived risk were identified from literature and thereafter shown as part of a proposed framework. Implications for practice and research are also discussed for better planning and implementation of m-health services.

This article describes how widespread adoption of mobile technology in healthcare is an innovation that is inevitable today in both developed and emerging markets around the world. Mobile health services (m-Health) act as an effective, accessible and affordable means of providing healthcare knowledge to users directly from providers. Despite such benefits of m-Health services, rapid adoption is not yet occurring, particularly in emerging markets. The main barrier is mostly the cynical behavior of users regarding this medium of healthcare services. The aim of this article is to examine underlying factors that can influence future use intentions of m-Health services. Conceptual model of the study identifies service qualities like reliability, privacy, responsiveness, empathy and information quality along with facilitating conditions, trust, effort expectancy and performance expectancy as significant constructs that influences users' overall perceptions of m-Health services, along with moderating effects of age and gender. Limitations and implications for practice and research are also discussed.

Objectives: Advances in technology are changing the way healthcare services are delivered. The adoption of different health technologies has significantly improved health access and efficiency. In addition, health-technology adoption can help immensely in improving health outcomes and enhancing public and private healthcare spending efficiency. However, the role of health technology in transforming healthcare delivery and enhancing spending efficiency is not well understood. In this paper, we reviewed the role of emerging technologies in delivering health services that promote health outcomes, improve productivity of the healthcare provider, and reduce healthcare costs. Methods: A narrative review was conducted of published articles as well as grey literature on application of technology in delivering medical care. Studies that met the following criteria were included: addressed a relevant aspect of technology in healthcare delivery; written in English; published between 1994 and June 2020; qualitative and quantitative study designs, systematic reviews, and primary and secondary research. Main results and conclusions: Utilizing technologies in delivering health services showed promise in improving health outcomes, enhancing healthcare productivity, and reducing overall healthcare costs. However, before these technologies are implemented, reimbursement and equity are two main issues that need to be addressed.

The unprecedented shock caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has severely influenced the delivery of regular healthcare services. Most non-urgent medical activities, including elective surgeries, have been paused to mitigate the risk of infection and to dedicate medical resources to managing the pandemic. In this regard, not only surgeries are substantially influenced, but also pre- and post-operative assessment of patients and training for surgical procedures have been significantly impacted due to the pandemic. Many countries are planning a phased reopening, which includes the resumption of some surgical procedures. However, it is not clear how the reopening safe-practice guidelines will impact the quality of healthcare delivery. This perspective article evaluates the use of robotics and AI in 1) robotics-assisted surgery, 2) tele-examination of patients for pre- and post-surgery, and 3) tele-training for surgical procedures. Surgeons interact with a large number of staff and patients on a daily basis. Thus, the risk of infection transmission between them raises concerns. In addition, pre- and post-operative assessment also raises concerns about increasing the risk of disease transmission, in particular, since many patients may have other underlying conditions, which can increase their chances of mortality due to the virus. The pandemic has also limited the time and access that trainee surgeons have for training in the OR and/or in the presence of an expert. In this article, we describe existing challenges and possible solutions and suggest future research directions that may be relevant for robotics and AI in addressing the three tasks mentioned above.
