Financial Inclusion (FI), a global concern of this decade, has been accepted by development agencies, governments, and policymakers as one of the pre-eminent ways to eradicate worldwide poverty and income inequality. Consequently, authorities are looking for possible ways to include the unbanked in formal financial chain. Islamic finance, specifically Islamic banking, with its welfare-oriented principles and unique products, has been able to capture the attention of policy makers. Moreover, a major portion of the Muslim population still exclude themselves from the formal financial chain due to religious prohibition of interest-based transactions for whom Islamic finance is the only way to inclusion. Bangladesh, one of the major Muslim countries in the world, is still to bring one-fourth of its total population under formal financial chain. At this backdrop, this chapter examines the empirical contribution of Islamic banking sector in financial inclusion condition as well as development scenario of Bangladesh.

Entrepreneurs, especially in developing societies, which include many Muslim countries among their fold, face a herculean task in up-scaling their businesses due to a lack of capital to procure relevant assets to grow their businesses. The world Islamic banks’ competitiveness report (2016) identified poor financial inclusion as one of the critical factors responsible for the uneven distribution of wealth in the Muslim world. This study presents the Murābaḥah-Taʻāwun financing product as an innovative addition to the range of financial products available on the Islamic banking shelf to reduce the incidence of poverty. Murābaḥah-Taʻāwun is operationalized where a group of entrepreneurs contribute funds together under a recognized Islamic bank while allowing every partner access to the fund on a rotational basis for the purchase of an asset according to a pre-defined arrangement. The study highlighted the importance of Murābaḥah-Taʻ''āwun as an Islamic financial contract by reviewing relevant extant literature. The proposed product shows that greater financial inclusion can be achieved without recourse to riba and thus will reduce poverty among Muslims.

With the development of increasingly advanced times, the bank continues to make new innovations so that at this time the bank is no longer just an institution that functions to collect and distribute funds, but at the same time also as an intermediary in the payment traffic. However, the Muslim community strives to realize banking based on sharia principles. For this reason, several Muslim countries have slowly begun to establish Islamic Banks. The development of Islamic banking is quite significant in several countries, but of the many countries, Indonesia actually has a different side. The difference lies in the term used to refer to a non-conventional bank. While other countries commonly refer to it as an Islamic Bank, in Indonesia it is actually called the Sharia Banking because the idea of ​​the Islamic Bank is alleged to have contained political and SARA elements. With high stretches owned by several Muslim countries to establish shari'ah banking, Indonesia as the country with the largest Muslim population in the world established the first sharia banking under the name Bank Muamalat Indonesia (BMI) which was officially operated in 1992. From year to year, Sharia banking growth is very fast. Keywords : Banking, Sharia Banking,Indonesia.   Abstrak Dengan perkembangan zaman yang semakin maju, bank terus melakukan inovasi baru sehingga pada saat ini bank tidak lagi hanya sekedar lembaga yang berfungsi menghimpun dan menyalurkan dana saja, namun sekaligus juga sebagai intermediasi dalam lalu lintas pembayaran. Namun, komunitas Muslim berusaha untuk mewujudkan perbankan berdasarkan prinsip syariah. Atas dasar alasan inilah, beberapa negara muslim perlahan mulai mendirikan Bank Islam. Perkembangan perbankan Islam cukup signifikan terjadi di beberapa negara, tetapi dari sekian banyak negara, Indonesia justru memiliki sisi yang berbeda. Perbedaan tersebut terletak pada istilah yang dipakai untuk menyebut bank yang nonkonvensional.Di saat negara-negara lain lazim menyebutnya sebagai Bank Islam, di Indonesia justrumenyebutnya Bank Syari’ah karena istilah Bank Islam diduga mengandung unsur politik dan SARA.Dengan geliat tinggi yang dimiliki oleh beberapa negara muslim untuk mendirikan perbankan syari’ah, Indonesia sebagai negara dengan populasi muslim terbesar di dunia mendirikan perbankan syariah pertama dengan nama Bank Muamalat Indonesia (BMI) yang secara resmi beroperasi pada tahun 1992.Dari tahun ke tahun, pertumbuhan perbankan syari’ah sangatcepat. Islamic finance has grown rapidly in the recent years particularly in the Middle East and the world. It receives a great attention of bankers and financial scholars due to its stability during financial shocks and crises. The paper uses empirical analysis to test the role of Islamic banking in enhancing the economic growth of United Arab Emirates (UAE). Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Gross formation (GF), and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) are used as representatives for economic growth, while Islamic banks’ investments are used as a representative for Islamic financial sector in the UAE. The study uses time series techniques to test the link between the variables. In the current study, co-integration along with error correction models is utilized. All econometric work is done using Eviews. The findings reveal that the causal relationship between Islamic banks’ investments and economic growth of UAE is supply-leading direction. Furthermore, the findings depict that Islamic investments have contributed in increasing investments and in bringing FDI into the country in the long-term. The study also shows that there is two-way association between Islamic banks’ investments and FDI. It shows that FDI supports Islamic banking and Islamic banking brings FDI. The paper concludes that authorities of the UAE should devote more attention for this growing banking sector by facilitating regulations for establishing new Islamic banks and then creating a suitable environment for their growth and progress in the UAE.

In recent years, several Muslim countries have made ambitious attempts to practise Islamic banking. Iran and Pakistan appear to be particularly active in transforming their banking and financial sectors completely in line with the dictates of shariah [N aqvi (1981)]. The present study aims to contribute to the understanding of the process of Islamisation of banking in these countries. This kind of understanding, it is believed, is important for policy-makers guiding the Islamisation process anywhere in the world. The study tracks, over a period of a decade, the routes Iran and Pakistan have taken to attain their avowed objective, and focusses on the common concerns they share in their respective pursuits. The study also discusses the ~iverging sets of problems faced by these countries. The limited amount of empirical research in the area of Islamic banking has left many policy-related questions unanswered. One reason for the scarcity of studies on the subject has been the lack of suitable information. However, with the availability of some patchy but useful data at hand it is now possible to arrive at some interesting conclusions in a systematic fashion.

AbstractPrevious studies on financial development have shown that differences in the legal origin explain differences in financial development. Using historical comparisons and cross-country regressions for 40 countries observed for the period from 2005 to 2018, our research assesses how different legal origins have affected the development of Islamic finance worldwide. More particularly, our research assesses empirically why and how the adoption of Shari’a, wholly or partially (combined with common or civil law), could explain the level of development of Islamic finance in different jurisdictions. Our primary results show that countries adopting a Shari’a legal system have a very well-developed Islamic financial system. Moreover, countries adopting a mixed legal system based on common law and Shari’a law have sufficient flexibility within their legal systems to make changes to their laws in response to the changing socioeconomic conditions, and this has helped the development of the Islamic financial industry. However, countries adopting a mixed legal system based on both civil law and Shari’a law appear less flexible in making changes to their old laws and this thwarted the development of the Islamic financial industry in these countries. Furthermore, we have found that the concentration of a Muslim population (the percentage of Muslim population) along with the level of income have both had a positive effect on the development of Islamic banking assets and on the development of Islamic banking as a whole.

Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world. With this amount, of course, it should be a capital for economic strength. However, as of November 2020, data released by the Financial Services Authority put the Islamic banking market share at 6.33%. Efforts to merge the three state-owned Sharia banks into Indonesian Sharia Banks are expected to increase the penetration of the sharia economy in Indonesia, which is still far behind when compared to conventional domestic economic movements and Islamic financial transactions in other countries. This research will describe the extent of the sharia economic conditions in Indonesia after the merger of state-owned sharia banks into BSI. This study uses a qualitative method with a type of literature review research which is obtained from various authentic sources such as books, articles, journals and trusted websites. There was a 2.7% increase in the market share of Islamic banks after the merger. This increase when compared to the existing potential and the market is still very small. However, it is hoped that this impact will continue to increase over time, especially as capital support for various financial sectors and the halal industry in the country.

How has Basel III (Bank for International Settlements), regarding the computation, measurement, and management of the liquidity coverage ratio (LCR), vitalized the Islamic banking sector in emerging economies? Vice versa, what is the Islamic banking sector’s capacity to respond in embracing Basel III? This study aims to review the current issues faced by a bank as it discusses the current regulatory guidelines and operational challenges in implementing the system. Based on the implementation of LCR preliminary secondary data of Malaysian banks between 2010 and 2016, this study finds that the readiness of LCR system implementation in the Islamic banking industry is currently low because LCR is still relatively new for all financial institutions and vendors. There is a huge gap between the present system infrastructure of the banks and the LCR model requirements as defined by BNM (Bank Negara Malaysia) under Basel III. Nevertheless, this finding opens new horizons of understanding and practically offers further investigations for the whole banking sector in Malaysia. Thus, policy makers, regulators, and industry players should utilize a unique framework for Islamic banks when strategizing liquidity risk management.

Financial inclusion is high on the agenda for governments as well as for organizations such as the World Bank. Research has pointed out that Muslims worldwide are less included in the formal financial system than non-Muslims, but there is no knowledge about the extent to which religious norms (most importantly the ban on interest on money) lead to financial exclusion among Muslims in the West. In this article I approach the issue of financial exclusion and inclusion through three interrelated questions that will be answered with data collected in Norway 2015 and 2016. The questions are: (a) To what extent do Muslims see conventional banking as a problem in their own lives? (b) Do level of education, age, national background or level of religiosity predict demand for Islamic banking? (c) Is demand for Islamic banking changing? This article is a first step in what should be a broader research program to find out whether and how religious norms cause financial exclusion of Muslims in the West.

Purpose The perception of different stakeholder groups on governance dimensions, such as transparency, accountability and ethics, in the Islamic banking sector is examined, given the global growth of Islamic banking and its purpose of enhancing economic growth and development through Shari’ah-compliant instruments. The purpose of this paper is to determine whether the stakeholders in Nigeria perceive each dimension differently. Design/methodology/approach The data for the study were collected using a survey questionnaire. Simple random sampling was used to select the respondents. The respondents are customers, employees and shareholders of the Islamic banking sector in Nigeria. Findings Findings show that ethics is highly perceived as the key dimension in governance for the Islamic banking sector, whilst a positive and significant relationship is observed between the variables. Based on the variance analysis, there were statistically significant differences in perception between the stakeholders groups in the Islamic banking system. However, similar positive perceptions are accorded towards the overall governance dimensions across stakeholder groups namely, customers, employees and shareholders. Originality/value This study will extend the current body of knowledge in the field of Islamic finance by providing insights into policy makers, operators and regulators of the Islamic banking sector in Nigeria on the prospective stakeholders’ level of perception of the governance dimension, which could form part of the solutions to many contemporary issues in the banking system. This contribution is important, considering the clear relationship among governance dimensions which should be viewed in light of Islamic ideals.
