Entrepreneurs, especially in developing societies, which include many Muslim countries among their fold, face a herculean task in up-scaling their businesses due to a lack of capital to procure relevant assets to grow their businesses. The world Islamic banks’ competitiveness report (2016) identified poor financial inclusion as one of the critical factors responsible for the uneven distribution of wealth in the Muslim world. This study presents the Murābaḥah-Taʻāwun financing product as an innovative addition to the range of financial products available on the Islamic banking shelf to reduce the incidence of poverty. Murābaḥah-Taʻāwun is operationalized where a group of entrepreneurs contribute funds together under a recognized Islamic bank while allowing every partner access to the fund on a rotational basis for the purchase of an asset according to a pre-defined arrangement. The study highlighted the importance of Murābaḥah-Taʻ''āwun as an Islamic financial contract by reviewing relevant extant literature. The proposed product shows that greater financial inclusion can be achieved without recourse to riba and thus will reduce poverty among Muslims.

Financial Inclusion (FI), a global concern of this decade, has been accepted by development agencies, governments, and policymakers as one of the pre-eminent ways to eradicate worldwide poverty and income inequality. Consequently, authorities are looking for possible ways to include the unbanked in formal financial chain. Islamic finance, specifically Islamic banking, with its welfare-oriented principles and unique products, has been able to capture the attention of policy makers. Moreover, a major portion of the Muslim population still exclude themselves from the formal financial chain due to religious prohibition of interest-based transactions for whom Islamic finance is the only way to inclusion. Bangladesh, one of the major Muslim countries in the world, is still to bring one-fourth of its total population under formal financial chain. At this backdrop, this chapter examines the empirical contribution of Islamic banking sector in financial inclusion condition as well as development scenario of Bangladesh.

With the development of increasingly advanced times, the bank continues to make new innovations so that at this time the bank is no longer just an institution that functions to collect and distribute funds, but at the same time also as an intermediary in the payment traffic. However, the Muslim community strives to realize banking based on sharia principles. For this reason, several Muslim countries have slowly begun to establish Islamic Banks. The development of Islamic banking is quite significant in several countries, but of the many countries, Indonesia actually has a different side. The difference lies in the term used to refer to a non-conventional bank. While other countries commonly refer to it as an Islamic Bank, in Indonesia it is actually called the Sharia Banking because the idea of ​​the Islamic Bank is alleged to have contained political and SARA elements. With high stretches owned by several Muslim countries to establish shari'ah banking, Indonesia as the country with the largest Muslim population in the world established the first sharia banking under the name Bank Muamalat Indonesia (BMI) which was officially operated in 1992. From year to year, Sharia banking growth is very fast. Keywords : Banking, Sharia Banking,Indonesia.   Abstrak Dengan perkembangan zaman yang semakin maju, bank terus melakukan inovasi baru sehingga pada saat ini bank tidak lagi hanya sekedar lembaga yang berfungsi menghimpun dan menyalurkan dana saja, namun sekaligus juga sebagai intermediasi dalam lalu lintas pembayaran. Namun, komunitas Muslim berusaha untuk mewujudkan perbankan berdasarkan prinsip syariah. Atas dasar alasan inilah, beberapa negara muslim perlahan mulai mendirikan Bank Islam. Perkembangan perbankan Islam cukup signifikan terjadi di beberapa negara, tetapi dari sekian banyak negara, Indonesia justru memiliki sisi yang berbeda. Perbedaan tersebut terletak pada istilah yang dipakai untuk menyebut bank yang nonkonvensional.Di saat negara-negara lain lazim menyebutnya sebagai Bank Islam, di Indonesia justrumenyebutnya Bank Syari’ah karena istilah Bank Islam diduga mengandung unsur politik dan SARA.Dengan geliat tinggi yang dimiliki oleh beberapa negara muslim untuk mendirikan perbankan syari’ah, Indonesia sebagai negara dengan populasi muslim terbesar di dunia mendirikan perbankan syariah pertama dengan nama Bank Muamalat Indonesia (BMI) yang secara resmi beroperasi pada tahun 1992.Dari tahun ke tahun, pertumbuhan perbankan syari’ah sangatcepat. This paper’s primary objective is to identify the relative importance of various Islamic financial products, in theory and in practice, by examining the financing records of the Bank Islam Malaysia (Berhad) and the Bahrain Islamic Bank. Currently, seven available Islamic financing products are considered viable alternatives to interest-based conventional contracts: mudarabah (trust financing), musharakah (equity financing), ijarah (lease financing), murabahah (trade financing), qard al-hassan (welfare loan), bay` bi al-thaman al-ajil (deferred payment financing), and istisna` (progressive payments). Among these financial products, mudarabah and musharakah are the most distinct. Their unique characteristics (at least in theory) make Islamic banks and Islamic financing viable alternatives to the conventional interest-based financial system. The question before us is to determine the extent of mudarabah and musharakah in Islamic financing in practice. The data are as follows: the average mudarabah is 5% of total financing, and the average musharakah is less than 3%. The combined average of mudarabah and musharakah for the two Islamic banks is less than 4% of the total finance and advances. The average qard al- hassan is about 4%, while istisna` does not yet exist in practice. Murabahah is the most popular and dominates all other modes of Islamic financing. The average use of murabahah is over 54%. When the bay` bi al-thaman al-ajil is added to the murabahah, the percentage of total financing is shown to be 2.68%. This paper also explores some possible reasons why these two Islamic banks appear to prefer murabahah to mudarabah and musharakah.

Islamic banking has emerged in recent decades as one of the most important trends in the financial world, side by side with conventional banking. Website design has become a very powerful tool in disseminating information of a particular banking institution and this phenomenon has been fully utilized by both conventional and Islamic banks throughout the world. The purpose of this article is to analyze website design of CIMB Bank that offers both conventional and Islamic financing facilities. The methodology employed in this article is qualitative in nature through examining the websites of CIMB Bank. The finding shows that CIMB Bank needs to improve their both website designs in order to attract more customers to their websites and give true information with regard of their products and services. It is further suggested that future researcher tries to explore more in-depth website designs in terms of products and services provided by the conventional and Islamic banking institutions in order to increase their market shares.

Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world. With this amount, of course, it should be a capital for economic strength. However, as of November 2020, data released by the Financial Services Authority put the Islamic banking market share at 6.33%. Efforts to merge the three state-owned Sharia banks into Indonesian Sharia Banks are expected to increase the penetration of the sharia economy in Indonesia, which is still far behind when compared to conventional domestic economic movements and Islamic financial transactions in other countries. This research will describe the extent of the sharia economic conditions in Indonesia after the merger of state-owned sharia banks into BSI. This study uses a qualitative method with a type of literature review research which is obtained from various authentic sources such as books, articles, journals and trusted websites. There was a 2.7% increase in the market share of Islamic banks after the merger. This increase when compared to the existing potential and the market is still very small. However, it is hoped that this impact will continue to increase over time, especially as capital support for various financial sectors and the halal industry in the country.

This chapter offers a literature review discussing the origin, history, and the growth of Islamic Banking, especially in the GCC countries. It provides detailed information regarding how Islamic Banking evolved throughout the years and what are the current Islamic financial products. Another interesting topic covered in this literature review is the performance comparison of Islamic and conventional banks during different time periods. Accordingly, the chapter explores how the financial standing of Islamic banks altered in comparison to conventional banks before and after the financial crisis of 2008 by presenting earlier studies from various countries. It is concluded that some potential challenges and future opportunities of the Islamic Banking are yet to be explored.

Financial inclusion is high on the agenda for governments as well as for organizations such as the World Bank. Research has pointed out that Muslims worldwide are less included in the formal financial system than non-Muslims, but there is no knowledge about the extent to which religious norms (most importantly the ban on interest on money) lead to financial exclusion among Muslims in the West. In this article I approach the issue of financial exclusion and inclusion through three interrelated questions that will be answered with data collected in Norway 2015 and 2016. The questions are: (a) To what extent do Muslims see conventional banking as a problem in their own lives? (b) Do level of education, age, national background or level of religiosity predict demand for Islamic banking? (c) Is demand for Islamic banking changing? This article is a first step in what should be a broader research program to find out whether and how religious norms cause financial exclusion of Muslims in the West.

The tremendous growth of Islamic banking has transformed a relatively new industry into a robust and widespread reality on the ground. Several Islamic financial institutions (IFIs) operate in different countries of the world and several Islamic modes of financing have been developed; however, most cater to the needs of commercial businesses, and personal finance. Few IFI products have been made available to support the agricultural sector. One rarely used product is Salam (a kind of sale in which farmers sell their product in advance, before the season’s harvest, to get funding for farming inputs as well as for their livelihood expenses), which, however, is of limited use due to a range of limitations. Hence, there remains a need for a product which is shari’a compliant and acceptable to IFIs as well as the end users, that is, the farmers.  This paper proposes an Islamic model suitable for entrepreneurs, farmers and IFIs. A mixed-methods research methodology is applied: while the study is mainly qualitative, a quantitative approach was applied to the data obtained through questionnaires. The general finding of this paper is that there is a need to have a shari’a-compliant financing model to be based on a participatory basis, in place of the debt-based modes which are currently in extensive use by IFIs. Therefore, I selected the Muzara’ah (sharecropping) concept as the basis of a model to help the agricultural economy and the Islamic banking industry. The reason for choosing the participatory over the debt-based mode is that the latter cannot bring about any real change, as I shall demonstrate from the particular perspective of Pakistan. Research into the demography of the Pakistani agricultural sector, on the other hand, demonstrates that the Muzara’ah model can be used anywhere in the world. The paper also aims to understand the effects on this sector of the use of financing by both commercial and Islamic banks, the strengths and weaknesses of financial intermediation, and the challenges faced by Islamic banks as concerns financing the agricultural sector. This research paper is divided into four sections. The first introduces and debates the position of agriculture in Pakistan; the ways in which commercial banks extend loans to this sector, and the socio-economic effects of such loans; and the different existing financing models being used for this sector and their respective drawbacks. The section also presents a brief discussion of Islamic banking and its advantages; different Islamic modes of financing; and how Islamic banks are supporting the agricultural sector in Pakistan. Furthermore, it argues that there is a global need for an alternative Islamic model to finance the agricultural sector, and that this need is particularly pressing in Pakistan. The second section discusses the Muzara’ah model, through an extensive review of the extant Islamic literature, encompassing, but not limited to, the definition of Muzara’ah, the Islamic basis for the practice and Islamic juristic views, as well as how Muzara’ah worked in a previous age. Moreover, this section discusses the similarities and differences in opinion among Islamic jurists (experts in Islamic law) about the validity of Muzara’ah. The focus of this section is on finding a consensus as to the most common and viable mode of Muzara’ah which is acceptable to a majority of jurists.The third section surveys agriculture in Pakistan, as well as the opinions and perspectives of farmers, bankers and other stakeholders to inform the proper development of an Islamic Muzara’ah sharecropping model. Practical research was carried out in Kohat, one of the cities of Pakistan, which is famous for its guava, wheat and maize production. A description of the fieldwork is also presented in this section.The fourth section draws on all the above information to develop a model based on the concept of Muzara’ah which can be feasibly implemented in the Islamic banking industry. Moreover, it presents a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the model and provides suggestions and recommendations about how it should be rolled out. The needs of end users, such as farmers and growers, are addressed, and a discussion is presented of how the product better meets their needs than the other products which are currently available to them.

In recent years the rise of Islamic banking has been one of the most important trends in the economic sphere, with an estimated 1.5 billion Muslims in the world, this arena has plenty of room for expansion. Conforming to Shariah (Islamic Law) puts a huge demand among Muslims looking for financial products and services that adhere to their beliefs. If it weren’t for the creation of such alter-natives to conventional banking and finance, Muslims would find it hard to participate in our globalized world without violating their religious principles. There are currently over 300 financial Institutions across the global sphere providing some type of Islamic financial product. According to some experts, the assets that are currently being managed under Shariah law, which range from investment to commercial banks and investment funds, are estimated to be no less than 300 billion. Other experts in the industry estimate the assets under mana-gement to be much larger. The FSA (Financial Services Authority), a regulator for financial services based out of London, estimates the total amount associated with Shariah banking to be as much as 500 billion. Even the U.S rating agency, S & P, estimates the sukuk (deed) market has reached over 75 billion and will likely be over 150 billion by the end of the decade. It used to be that Islamic fi-nancial products were more of a niche market but over time they are now considered mainstream, with many well-known interna-tional financial institutions battling to get a little piece of the pie.
