The Role of Software in Construction Management

Civil construction projects not only need to be executed on time; these also require that budgetary overruns are not allowed to take place needlessly. The traditional constraints involving time, quality, and money must always be paid close attention for a project to be considered commercial and engineering success. In this chapter, the authors discuss the role of project management software and the various commercial options available in the software market for entrepreneurs, engineers, and project planners to explore. They also discuss the need for activity codes and project scheduling types and the significance of these in civil construction engineering. The importance of planning and scheduling cannot be overestimated in a world where competition is high and civil construction companies often find themselves on razor's edge to stay afloat and remain profitable.

Planning and scheduling is extremely important role in construction projects thank to the increasing difficulties during this field. Construction Planning is that the necessary warning to Scheduling and determining general sequence, defining labour tasks, construction methods and assigning responsibilities, inappropriate planning can cause major delays with the project work. For the planning and scheduling work requires huge amount of  paperwork, which makes the management very burdensome. These problems may be solved employing a  project management software which helps to grant a planned approach to planning. Nowadays use of project management (PM) software as a tool for managing and organizing work has gained its importance in construction industry and continues to grow at a faster pace in other industries also. During this study, attempt is made  to check project management software such as MS project and Primavera and their feasibility is studied.

With the continuous advancement of China's urbanization process, the demand for construction projects is increasing, which is both an opportunity and a challenge for construction companies. If the enterprises themselves can grasp the background and policy conditions to maintain a high level of construction engineering, then its enterprise benefits and future development prospects will be excellent. However, there are also many companies whose own reputation and actual benefits have been affected for poor engineering quality caused by poor construction management. This is exactly what we must pay attention to. This article will analyse and explore the relevant work to improve the engineering quality of different phases of engineering construction and to guide the management of the construction unit in the future from the perspective of the construction unit to strengthen the project quality supervision.

Abstract: Smart-Sheet is a project management software product, developed and sold by Smart consultancies. It is designed to assist a project manager in developing a plan, assigning resources to tasks, tracking progress, managing the budget, and analysing workloads. Smart sheet can be used as a standalone tool for tracking project progress or it can be used for tracking complex project distributed in many geographical areas and managed by a number of project managers. Smart Sheet is designed to assist a project manager in: 1) Developing a plan, 2) Assigning resources to tasks, 3) Tracking progress, 4) Managing budget and 5) Analysing workloads. Effective project management implies the use of advanced planning and scheduling methods that allow to determine feasible sequences of activities and to complete a project on time and on budget. Traditional scheduling tools like fundamental Critical Path Method (CPM) and various methods for Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) and Time Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (TCPSP) have many shortcomings for construction projects where spatial factor plays a critically important role. Previous attempts to interpret space as a specific resource were successful for particular problems of line-of-balance scheduling, space scheduling, dynamic layout planning, horizontal and vertical logic scheduling, workspace congestion mitigating, scheduling multiple projects with movable resources, spatial scheduling of repeated and grouped activities and motion planning. However, none of these methods considers the spatio-temporal requirements in a holistic framework of generic RCPSP problem and provides feasible results accounting for workspace and workflow factors. In this paper we start with the classical RCPSP statement and then present mathematically strong formalisation of the extended generalised problem, taking into account workspace congestion and workflow disturbance constraints specified in practically meaningful and computationally constructive ways. For the generalised RCPSP problem an effective scheduling method is proposed. The method tends to minimise the project makespan while satisfying timing constraints and precedence relations, not exceeding resource utilisation limits, avoiding workspace congestions and keeping workflows continuous. The method reuses so-called serial scheduling scheme and provides for additional computational routines and heuristic priority rules to generate feasible schedules satisfying all the imposed requirements. Advantages of the method and prospects for its application to industrial needs are outlined in the paper too.

Poor hazard management is among significant difficulties confronting the construction business on issues of timely project completion. Although hazard factors are various, the nature of construction projects being inclined to changes amid execution makes it hard to satisfactorily catch chance perspectives identified with scheduling and timely project completion. Conventional 2D PC based devices don't enough use digitized calculable data, along these lines constrained in capturing construction risk. Hence, derive the benefit  of prominent BIM to pass over this gap is presently being noted in growth  venture management. This examination researches the utilization of BIM in managing scheduling risk of construction projects. In our study, to properly minimize the risk of schedule delay in projects; construction sequencing exercises should be satisfactorily digitized and BIM offers the total chance to integrate vital aspects of project management that  management enhance scheduling risk management.

We suggest that project portfolio management is applicable and should be adopted in Chinese construction companies.

Environmental and ecological impacts associated with construction activities have become an ever-increasing concern, especially the considerable amount of waste generated on construction sites. Regulations and growing client pressure on meeting environmental standards have led contractors to adopt sustainable practices and try to embed this concept in their processes. Sustainable procurement management (SPM) as a potential solution takes the environmental consequences of procurement decisions into account and integrates sustainable practices into project procurement to bring positive environmental outcomes. Previous research has mainly focused on the public sector in achieving green procurement, yet this study attempts to highlight internal capacities that help private organisations manage the requirements associated with practicing sustainability. It is theorised that robust management structures, specifically project management offices (PMOs), would enhance the oversight capabilities of contractors in implementing the SPM process. The objectives of the current study are to (1) identify the requirements of a sustainable project procurement process in construction sites based on a literature review, and (2) explore the facilitative role of PMO units in achieving these requirements in the private sector. A literature review was conducted followed by a qualitative survey to solicit the viewpoints of construction professionals in principle contracting firms. As a result of the study, we identified 17 sustainability requirements and found that PMOs boost collaboration and improve the quality of decision making towards sustainable procurement. The findings (1) explain how PMOs support sustainability, (2) provide insights on implementing sustainable practices in project purchases, and (3) improve theoretical understanding of the SPM principles.

The construction projects in Pakistan have inherent problems of erroneous planning and schedule development. This dilemma has led to the failure of the majority of construction projects in Pakistan. Earlier researches have tried to curtail the increasing spectrum of inaccurate planning and schedule development. But not many research studies have shed light on the major factor of 2D CAD drawings interpretation problems, which are playing a key role in defective planning and scheduling. Moreover, the role of BIM, i.e., Building Information Modeling with respect to efficient planning, has not been also discussed in detail. This study has concluded a positive impact of BIM on effective planning and scheduling in the construction industry of Pakistan. About 210 responses were obtained from experienced construction professionals of Pakistan and tested via regression analysis in order to validate this argument. It has been analyzed that 2D CAD drawings are now getting primitive and 3D technology BIM is taking its place. BIM is an efficient tool for planning and scheduling. With the start of CPEC and Multi-Billion Dollar investment on infrastructure, construction industry of Pakistan needs to uplift its existing standard in order to meet with international requirements. For this purpose, BIM has been recommended. It will not only assist in attaining flawless planning but will also increase the success rate of CPEC projects in Pakistan.

These days, risk management and analysis are serious issues in the effective management of construction projects, because construction projects are likely to be very dynamic, productive, diverse and increasingly competitive. Risk management helps project parties such as clients, contractors and vendors/suppliers to meet their obligations to reduce negative impacts on their works. The outcomes of the risk management method include the analysis and detection of risks, the creation of building project management systems and the efficient use of resources. The aim of this article is to find out how the Somalian construction companies see the value of construction project risks and how to manage it by dispatching a questionnaire. The total questions of the questionnaire are seventeen questions and were distributed by various participants such as clients, contractors and designers. The findings show that in the implementation of risk management techniques, the Somalian construction industry varies greatly from building companies in foreign countries. The contractor needs to consider risk obligations, dynamics of risk incidents, risk tolerance and risk control skills to handle the risks effectively and efficiently. Due to the insufficiency of experience in the attitude of Somalian entrepreneurs towards risk management is very hard to change. However, as a component of their project management, the construction companies must include risk analysis in projects. The application of risk management in Somalian construction companies is small to moderate, with little difference between organizations' types, sizes and risk tolerances and individual respondents' experience.
