There are many factors that contribute to the causes of schedule overruns in construction projects. This ranges from factors inherent in the technology and its management, to those resulting from the physical, social, and financial environment. Schedule overruns can give rise to disruption of work and loss of productivity, late completion of project, increased time related costs and third party claims and abandonment or termination of contract. Schedule overruns are costly and often result in disputes and claims. Hence, the need to identify mitigation measures of construction projects overruns that will bring about the timely delivery of construction projects. This paper assesses the measures to mitigate against construction projects schedule overruns in the Gauteng Province construction industry in South African. The data used in this paper were derived from both primary and secondary sources. The primary data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to construction professionals in the study area. Data received from the questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics procedures. Findings revealed that proper project planning and scheduling, effective strategic planning, site management and supervision, amongst others, were the major mitigation measures of construction projects schedule overruns in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on the subject of the measures of mitigating against construction project schedule overruns in the Gauteng Province construction industry.

Civil construction projects not only need to be executed on time; these also require that budgetary overruns are not allowed to take place needlessly. The traditional constraints involving time, quality, and money must always be paid close attention for a project to be considered commercial and engineering success. In this chapter, the authors discuss the role of project management software and the various commercial options available in the software market for entrepreneurs, engineers, and project planners to explore. They also discuss the need for activity codes and project scheduling types and the significance of these in civil construction engineering. The importance of planning and scheduling cannot be overestimated in a world where competition is high and civil construction companies often find themselves on razor's edge to stay afloat and remain profitable.

AbstractSuccessful performance and completion of construction projects highly depend on an adequate time scheduling of the project activities. On implementation of time scheduling, the execution modes of activities are most often required to be set in a manner that enables in achieving the minimum total project cost. This paper presents an approach to cost optimal time scheduling, which integrates a spreadsheet application and data transfer to project management software (PMS). At this point, the optimization problem of project time scheduling is modelled employing Microsoft Excel and solved to optimality using Solver while organization of data is dealt by macros. Thereupon, Microsoft Project software is utilized for further managing and presentation of optimized time scheduling solution. In this way, the data flow between programs is automated and possibilities of error occurrence during scheduling process are reduced to a minimum. Moreover, integration of spreadsheet and PMS for cost optimal time scheduling in construction is performed within well-known program environment that increases the possibilities of its wider use in practice. An application example is shown in this paper to demonstrate the advantages of proposed approach.

Relevance. The digitalization of society and education has changed approaches to management behaviour, which is noticeable in terms of project management in professional (vocational) education schools. It has led to the allocation of resources to ensure the effective functioning of professional (vocational) education schools and enhance their competitiveness by improving their internal processes and expanding the range of educational services provided to students and the adult population. Aim: the study aims to clarify the characteristics of project management in the field of professional (voca- tional) education through the use of specialized software. Methods. Analysis of project management software. This method made it possible to differentiate the soft- ware into structural elements. It allowed establishing interconnections between the elements of the software as a system. Certain features of an internal logical construction of the software interface for project management were described by using external and internal interpretations (the descriptive method) and the method of analysis. Such methods as comparison and collation play an essential place in the study. By comparison, the differences between the software products were determined. By collation, the similarities between the software for project management were clarified and, as a result, its specificity. Results: the list and key features of project management software in the field of professional (vocational) education were outlined. Conclusions: project planning in professional (vocational) education schools is used for displaying the schedule of project objectives graphically and visualizing the interaction between its internal objectives; document sharing and teamwork implemented through a central document repository; exchange of calendars and contacts: project schedules, dates of activities and contacts, which should be automatically updated in all calendars of the persons conducting project activities; control over failures and unforeseen consequences.

As amount of information in construction industry is growing, the role of information system in project management is becoming increasingly important. With the emerging IT application to the advancing construction industry, construction project management system with advanced technology has been progressed vigorously to improve construction productivity and management efficiency. Recently, a web-based Project Management Information System (PMIS) is developed to support decision-making process by efficiently managing project related information generated from various discipline. Many firms are in the process of developing the PMIS system or already have been applied the system to various projects. However, PMIS is still in its early stage of development to be applied at industrial plant construction projects. With the complexity of the industrial plant projects, the industry practitioners need to be able to visualize the construction schedule information to manage the project efficiently. This study suggests methodologies for improving PMIS specialized for industrial plant piping construction projects to estimate the baseline schedule and performance measurement more accurately by developing a framework for the piping construction projects. By using this developed system, the researchers expect that piping construction projects will be more efficiently managed on a real-time basis through measuring progress of piping at each and every state of progress milestone and provide management with opportunities to forecast the level of efforts required to execute the remaining work scope in a timely manner.
