This chapter investigates the relationship between the performance and the screening strategies of US and European socially responsible funds. For the full sample and, in particular, for US funds, the results show a curvilinear relationship between screening intensity and fund performance. Continental European funds exhibit a positive relationship between the number of screens and performance. Furthermore, for the full sample and US funds, screening on governance impacts performance positively. In turn, environment and products screens have a negative impact on US fund performance. Finally, funds certified with social labels tend to yield higher performance. Overall, the geographical differences in the impact of the screening process on SRI fund performance are consistent with the contextual nature of socially responsible investments.

Abstract Background and Aims Increased levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) are associated with a negative impact on the bone-muscle axis including sarcopenia with muscle weakness and muscle atrophy and osteoporosis, and it is possible that treating hyperparathyroidism (HPT) can ameliorate these disturbances. However, the effects of parathyroidectomy (PTX) on muscle mass, strength and performance, and physical activity have not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to evaluate the impact of PTX on muscle (mass, strength, and performance), physical activity, body fat and resting energy expenditure (REE) in patients on hemodialysis with severe HPT. Method We are prospectively evaluating muscle mass strength, performance and physical activity of 30 patients before and after 6 months of PTX by using Actigraph GT3X accelerometer, timed-up-and-Go (TuG), Sit-to-Stand-to-Sit (STS) and muscle strength tests [handgrip (HGS), supine (SP) and leg press (LP)]. Body composition changes were assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and REE was examined by indirect calorimetry. Results At 6 months after PTX, 11 patients who already completed the protocol, showed a significant drop in PTH [1445 (1363-1937) vs. 54 (23-132) pg/mL; p = 0.002] and alkaline phosphatase [306 (235-744) vs. 77.5 (52-100] U/L); p = 0.002], a significant increase of number of steps/day [4321 (3384 – 6317) vs. 5950 (3918 – 7159); p = 0.04] and improvements of strength tests: HGS (27 ±14 vs. 31 ±15 kg; p = 0.01); SP (27 ±15 vs. 31 ±17 kg; p = 0.01] and LP [27 (2-36) vs. 36 (24-89) kg; p 0.04]. In addition, there was a significant reduction of TuG [10 (8-15) vs. 8 (7-11) seconds; p = 0.01], and a tendency towards STS improvement [6 (0-7) vs. 8 (7-11); p = 0.06]. A significant increase in body weight (66 ± 12 vs. 68 ± 14 Kg; p = 0.02), body mass index [24 (21–26) vs. 26 (21–28) kg/m2; p 0.001], and bone mineral content (BMC) [1.8 (1.3-2) vs. 2.1 (1.7-2.7); p=0.002] was seen. However, lean body mass (LBM) decreased [40.4 (38-55) vs. 39 (37-51) Kg; p=0.001], whereas fat mass (FAT) increased [18 (17-28) vs. 24 (17–30) kg; p = 0.02]. No change was noted in skeletal muscle index (SMI) and in REE [1580 (1193–1988) vs. 1473 (1326 - 1786) kcal/day; p = 0.7). We noticed a tendency toward an increase in IGF-1 levels [180 (141-207) vs. 223 (151-281) µg/L; p = 0.08], but no significant variation was found in serum albumin, insulin and HOMA index. Conclusion In hemodialysis patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism undergoing PTX, there were marked improvements of muscular function and bone mass, but not of muscle mass. Our findings suggest that PTH-associated sarcopenia is mediated not only by a decrease in muscle mass but also by muscle dysfunction. The long-term effect of PTX on muscle status remains to be further examined.

This study is taken to describe the relationship between the levels of debt, dividend policy and the performance of firms listed in Vietnamese stock market. The dividend policy is proxied by the dividend yield while firm’s performance is measured by ROE, ROA, and P/E. The total number of observations is 552, collecting from 92 listed companies on Hochiminh Stock Exchange during 2012 and 2019. The analysis results from generalized least squares (GLS) models report that the choice of firm’s performance proxy affects the relationship between firm’s performance and leverage as well as dividend policy. While leverage has positive impact on ROE and ROA, it has negative impact on P/E. In contrast, dividend yield ratio is negatively correlated with ROA and P/E but positively correlated with ROE. However, the impact of debt levels on firm’s performance is independent with the choice of leverage proxy. The findings of this research are expected to provide better understanding about the connection between debt, dividend and performance of the firm that can support the managers to make relevant decisions.

This study intends to find out the impact of planning and budgeting processes and performance measures on the behaviour of the responsibility center managers employed in a private university “X”. Method used in this study was qualitative research approach.The results showed that planning and budgeting submission processes with a bottom up participative approach influenced the behaviour of the responsibility center managers. Their appreciation and togetherness feeling was developed, as well as their commitment to execute the planned program and budgeting. Secondly, in the case that the approved planning and budgeting was implemented not as expected and planned without any explanation yielded a negative behaviour to the central managers that were shown by their less optimum potential works or with no action at all. Thirdly, financial performance measured with variant analysis was not reflecting the real performance of the responsibility center managers. The fact could cause misinterpretation of the management and also negative impact. It brought frustration among the responsibility center managers who actually had good performance. Furthermore, performance measurement, that is mainly based on financial aspects and neglecting non financial ones, influenced the reluctance of the responsibility center managers who just considered short term purposes and reluctant to make innovation. And last, by following steps suggested in the Balanced Scorecard, it could be able to define the Key Performanc Indicators of responsibility center managers with taking into consideration either financial or non financial aspects.

The study examines the impact of Socially Responsible Leadership on Employee Leave Intention in IT companies in Egypt. The sample consists of 208 employees in Egyptian IT companies. The study used the updated version of the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale (SRLS-R2) as the tool of investigation. The methodology used included the Pearson coefficient, the Cronbach Alpha coefficient, simple liner regressions and ANOVA tests. The study concluded that Socially Responsible Leadership and its eight dimensions (Congruence, Commitment, Common Purpose, Collaboration, Controversy with Civility, Citizenship, Change for the Common Good and Consciousness of Self) have a significant negative impact on the Employee Leave Intention.

Introduction. The health care system in modern educational institutions requires a comprehensive approach to analyzing and evaluating the impact of environmental factors on the health of students, which is of priority importance for the personnel potential of military specialists. The aim of study is to research the influence of environmental factors of a Military University on the health of the future personnel potential of specialists in the armored vehicle service. Materials and methods. The study involved 234 cadets in the dynamics of training from 1st to 5th year. Every year, a social survey of students was conducted, daily caloric and energy consumption, training load and performance, extensive and intensive indicators of morbidity were calculated. Results. Changes in environmental factors in the Military University and the deterioration of the quality of life of cadets are significant factors in the formation of negative trends in their health. There is an unevenness in the values of environmental factors in different training courses, as well as a tendency to increase the overall incidence. Conclusions. There is a need for additional measures aimed at reducing the negative impact of environmental factors on the health of cadets, which should be implemented comprehensively at all levels and stages of training.

ABSTRACT Firms often evaluate subordinate performance relative to a difficult but attainable goal set at the beginning of the evaluation period. For many, a mechanism exists by which these goals may be adjusted downward at the end of the period to account for an uncontrollable negative event. We examine, experimentally, how the knowledge that a downward ex post discretionary goal adjustment is possible affects subordinates' expectancy of reward and performance in periods where a negative uncontrollable event occurs, and whether high identity, defined as high perceived social connectedness between the superior and subordinate, moderates this effect. We find that high superior-subordinate identity can offset the otherwise negative impact of the potential for downward ex post discretionary goal adjustment on subordinates' expectancy of reward and performance. Thus, creating an organizational culture that promotes identity between superiors and subordinates can complement incentive-based controls in motivating subordinate performance. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to ascertain whether weather variables can explain the stock return reaction on the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index by employing a number of macroeconomic indicators as control variables. Design/methodology/approach The authors incorporate the generalized autogressive conditional heteroskeasticity model in methodology for the period August 26, 2009 to May 30, 2014 using daily data. Findings The empirical results indicate that not only do changes in humidity and wind levels seem to affect positively the European stock market but changes in returns oil and gold prices as well. However, the results show that the volatility of the US dollar/Yen exchange rate and ten-year bond value exerts significant negative impact on companies’ stock returns. Originality/value This study adds to the international literature by documenting the impact of weather variables on socially responsible companies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand different aspects of structural dispersion in virtual teams (VTs). The study measures five types of dispersion, their impact on VT performance and the moderating effect of electronic communication. Design/methodology/approach The authors collected data from 44 globally distributed VTs representing 403 members. The authors used details of the members’ locations to measure five elements of dispersion for each team: spatial, time-zone, number of locations, extent of numerical balance across locations and extent of isolated members for a team. The authors used two items to assess effective electronic communication and measured team performance on four items from three sources – members, leaders and third-party stakeholders. Findings Using regression, the authors found that the number of sites, degree of team balance and isolation had a negative impact on team performance. Spatial and temporal dispersion did not impact performance. Effective electronic communication moderated the relationship of team performance with team balance and the number of sites. Research limitations/implications Study presents novel findings on the role of team configuration in VTs. Limitations: the study provides pointers to the likelihood of a non-linear relationship between spatial distance and performance; however, the scope of the paper does not permit an examination of this model. Future research can study this relationship. Second, the study does not examine how team configuration impacts the team processes that discount performance. Finally, the study treats each index of dispersion as independent of the others. The analysis does not study the interplay between and among the indices. Practical implications The findings provide clear indicators for managers and researchers of VTs on the issues associated with the location and configuration of the teams. Managers, while designing and managing dispersed members are now informed of the impact of the number of sites and the sub-group dynamics. The study underscores the importance of effective electronic communication in managing dispersion. Social implications The study presents how faultiness based on location of VT sub-groups (as represented in the configuration of a team) can hamper performance. Literature suggests that this faultiness can also extend to social identities (based on gender, culture, etc.). The indicators provided by this study in this respect provide a topical focus for research because diverse dispersed teams are becoming more prevalent. Originality/value The study is the first empirical exploration of dispersion in VTs beyond the traditionally acknowledged dimensions of spatial distance and time-zones. It is a timely response to the recent trends in literature. Additionally, the study derives data from a unique data set of global VTs, thus making findings easily generalizable.

PurposeThere is a great deal of research that has been done to investigate the investment characteristics of conventional socially responsible investment portfolios compared to their broader conventional counterparts. However, the impact of incorporating sustainability criteria into the traditional Sharia screening process has not so far been investigated. Therefore, the study aims to give empirical evidence as to whether or not incorporating sustainability socially responsible criteria in the traditional Sharia screening process has a significant impact on the investment characteristics of the Islamic investment portfolio.Design/methodology/approachThe paper examines the investment characteristics of four groups of investment portfolios mainly, Dow Jones Global Index, Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, Dow Jones Islamic Market World Index and Dow Jones Islamic Market Sustainability Index. To improve the robustness of the study, the analysis was carried out at different levels. First, absolute mean return and t‐test were used to examine whether the difference between the different groups of investments is statistically significant or not. Second, risk adjusted equilibrium models, both single‐index and Fama and French multi‐index, were employed. This is to control for different risk exposure and investment style bias associated with different investment portfolios examined.FindingsThe paper finds that neither the Sharia nor the sustainability screening process seems to have an adverse impact on the performance and systematic risk of the investment portfolios compared to their unrestricted conventional counterparts. Therefore, Muslim as well as socially responsible investors can choose investments that are consistent with their value systems and beliefs without being forced to sacrifice performance or expose to higher systematic risk.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the existing literature by giving new evidence on the impact of incorporating sustainability criteria into the traditional Sharia screening process that has not so far been investigated.

Background: Social media (SM) use among young adults has increased significantly in recent years and has been linked to poor sleep quality. College athletes pose a unique risk for poor sleep given their many demands. Currently, limited research is available on the impact of SM use on sleep quality, or the competition performance of college athletes. Hypothesis: College athletes who use more SM will have worse sleep quality and worse competition performance. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed among local NCAA Division III athletes. Data was collected via a SM use form, lifestyle survey, and PROMIS sleep disturbance questionnaire. SM volume (hours of SM use per day over 7 days) was recorded using the iPhone screen time function. The main outcome measures were sleep quality, using the PROMIS T-score, and performance, collected through publicly available competition results. Participants were divided into 3 groups based on their SM volume; 1) moderate SM users (SM time ≤ 2hours/day), 2) active SM users (SM time < 2 - ≤5hours/day), and 3) super active SM users (SM time > 5hours/day). For sleep quality, an ANCOVA was used to identify differences in the 3 groups while controlling for covariates (i.e. injury status, caffeine use, number of roommates, academic load, catastrophic life event, life balance and sleep medication use) that might impact sleep and performance. For performance, a binary logistic regression model was used to determine the independent association between each variable and competition performance after adjusting for confounders. Results: 87 athletes (age:19.5±1.2 years, 40 males, 47 females) completed the survey. All males participated in track and field, while the females consisted of 37 track athletes and 10 swimmers. Controlling for the effect of lifestyle variables, a difference in sleep quality was identified among the three groups (p=0.025), (Table 1. A pairwise comparison indicated that the sleep quality of super active SM users was worse than moderate SM users (p=0.033) (Figure 1). For competition performance, an independent association was found between increased Facebook time and poor performance after adjusting confounders (aOR: 0.989, 95%CI: 0.978-0.999, p=0.038), (Table 2,3). Conclusion: High SM use appears to have a negative impact on sleep quality. Also, greater SM use may hinder competition performance among college athletes. These findings may have implications for developing SM use guidelines for college athletes to improve their sleep quality and performance.
