Water quality monitoring is an important tool in determining the safety and suitability of water for various desired and intended uses. The procedures involved in the evaluation of water quality are numerous and multifaceted. Therefore, taking into consideration the specific objectives of water quality monitoring, sampling design is of vital importance. Most of the physical parameters of water quality are determined via in-situ measurements using modern testing equipment/field testing kits. Although there are some good field-based sensors that are being used for evaluation of water quality, the chemical parameters traditionally are mostly analyzed through laboratory-based experiments. This chapter is aimed to offer an inclusive knowledge and insights on the importance and assessment of physico-chemical parameters that are of high priority for monitoring the water quality of wetlands.

This paper shows the results obtained in field analysis performed at the Tamis River, starting from the settlement Jasa Tomic - border between Serbia and Romania to Pancevo - confluence of Tamis into the Danube. The Tamis is a 359 km long river rising in the southern Carpathian Mountains. It flows through the Banat region and flows into the Danube near Pancevo. During the years the water quality of the river has severely deteriorated and badly affected the environment and the river ecosystem. In situ measurements enabled determination of physico-chemical parameters of water quality of the Tamis River on every 400 m of the watercourse, such as: water temperature, pH value, electrical conductivity, contents of dissolved oxygen and oxygen saturation. The main reason of higher pollution of Tamis is seen in connection to DTD hydro system. Sampling was performed at 7 points with regard to color, turbidity, total hardness, alkalinity, concentration of ammonium nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, iron, chlorides and sulphates in samples. The aim of the present work was to evaluate water quality in the Tamis River taking into account significant pollution, which originates from settlements, industry and agriculture, and to suggest appropriate preventive measures to further pollution decreasing of the river's water.

Healthy coral reefs depends on the quality of the waters , so that research and monitoring of water quality becomes important. This research attempt to asses marine waters quality at kaledupa island and it’ s surrounding waters on October and November 2014. 33 In-situ samples were collected using multiparameters tool purposively which are categorized into  physical parameters (temperature, turbidity and clarity), and chemical parameters (DO, salinity and pH). Waters quality defined by STORET method based on Ministry of Living Environment decree number 115 year of 2003. Analysis geographically has been conducted to describe distribution of waters quality spatially. The result shows that Kaledupa waters has sustain slightly pollution, especially on DO, turbidity, temperature and salinity parameters which have deviated from standard values. The light pollution in Kaledupa waters is suspected caused by the entry of abundance organic matter and shallow bathymetry.

The use of pesticides / fertilizers in plantations has become a problem in maintaining the quality of surface water. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the water quality for irrigation purposes in the Rio Apéu microbasin – Para. The physico-chemical parameters evaluated were: pH, DO, SAR, TDS and EC measured in situ and the metals Al, Fe, Na, Ca, Mg determined in the laboratory Evandro Chagas Institute, according to the method of APHA. The average levels of pH (5.51), OD (5.04 mg L-1) are indications of normal condition in Amazonian waters. The results of Al (332 mg L-1) and Fe (5.74 mg L -1) imply the leaching of sediments from the geological formation of the region rich in these minerals, even though they present values above what is recommended by the legislation. The Richard classification allowed us to define that the waters of the study area have low salinity and sodicity, so they are not restricted to use. Thus, the results of the water quality analysis in the watershed can be concluded that it does not offer environmental problems in the use for irrigation activity

The river Kirtankhola has great importance in southern part of Bangladesh due to its necessity in transportations, municipal and agricultural purposes. But the ecological status and impacts of water quality on phytoplankton diversity were undiscovered. To cover the maximum area of the river, water samples were collected from the 6 locations (ST) covering about 13 km. Some parameters were measured immediately after sampling by portable devices and others done in laboratory following standard methods. The overall quality of the water was found good according to water quality guidelines of World Health Organization, although the water of port area showed comparatively high SO42- and CO3- values which attracts attention for future monitoring. ST 6 showed comparatively more alkaline water (pH 8.45) along with highest EC, TDS, NO3-, NH4+ and DIP values. Besides, 53 phytoplankton taxa belonging to Cyanophyceae (6), Chlorophyceae (10), Euglenophyceae (12) and Bacillariophyceae (25) were identified from the river. Scenedesmus acuminatus was found commonly in five stations except ST 1, whereas Euglena chlamydophora (ST 1), Gomphonema olivaceum (ST 3) and Cymbella parva (ST 5) found rarely. Highest diversity was counted in ST 6. Moreover, Chlorophyceae and Bacillariophyceae have positive correlation with several physical parameters, whereas Cyanophyceae negatively correlated. Euglenophyceae has both negative and positive correlations with some physico-chemical parameters. However, this was first attempt to measure diversity of primary producers and their correlations with water quality of Kirtankhola River.
