Understanding Motivation Factors in Green IT Adoption

Green information technology entails the resource-efficient consumption through the use of IT infrastructure to ensure sustainable business and environmental performance. This article explores the perceptions of firms who have adopted Green IT, by developing a conceptual framework that reflects the motivation factors in Green IT adoption in developing countries. The framework was tested using a structured survey and deployed to senior managers of manufacturing and service industries. Results indicated that attitude, internal and external pressure and consider future consequence positively effects the decision to adopt Green IT in organizations. This study also found that customer satisfaction, environment, and economic performance are significant factors in achieving sustainability. Thus, pro-environmental commitment and actions of the organizations drive green business activities. Through this research, the study recommends further investigation of the relationship among the motivation factors as well as its implications for organizations' performance towards sustainability.

The Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry accounts for 15% of the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) in the Philippines annually. The BPO industry continuously improves the economic growth and performance due to the increasing investments on this sector. Given the role of the BPO sector, business activities involved on its operations share environmental impacts on carbon emission, disposal of wastes and increasing energy consumption that contributes to the environmental degradation. In this, the emergence of Green Information Technology (IT) adoption is aimed at minimizing the environmental impacts of business activities while balancing economic performance. This paper is an attempt to provide the current state of Green IT adoption in a BPO firm. The authors apply qualitative approach in collecting, analyzing and interpreting the data. The findings revealed that Green IT adoption in the BPO firm is on its emergence, Office environment practices is the most evident implementation of Green IT whereas technological factors has strong influence to the BPO firm to adopt Green IT. Thus, Green IT adoption in the BPO firm is part of their long-term objective and commitment towards sustainable business and environmental.

Information Systems, computers and computing in general consume an immense amount of natural resources, the energy used to power them, and the problems that arise in the disposing of obsolete hardware. Mark O'Neill, the author of Green IT for Sustainable Business Practice defines green IT as, “a collection of strategic and tactical initiatives that directly reduces the carbon footprint of an organization's computing operation” (O'Neill, 2010). Issues of sustainability have started to become a significant topic of discussion in the information systems community. IT practitioners are focused more now than ever on reducing the direct impact that IT use has on the environment (Dedrick, 2010).

Green Information Technology (IT) has emerged as a crucial topic for environmentally and sustainability development. At the same time, Green IT impacts the organisation as well. Studies show there is a lack of a proposed framework in the Green IT literature. As the IT industry is one of the significant sectors supporting the Green Technology Policy, this study objective is to identify the factors rendered in the Green IT adoption and examine the factors that drive the adoption of Green IT in Malaysia. The study referred to the case study to show the most important factors rendered in Green IT adoption in the public sector and the private sector in Malaysia. A qualitative method was applied through a semi-structured interview by using open-ended questions as a guideline with five organisations from the public sector and the private sector. This study prioritises the explanation building as a specific approach to analysis. Results show that there are five factors rendered in Green IT adoption in Malaysia: environmental factor, cost factor, organisational factor, technological factor, and business opportunity factor. This study benefits policymaker, organisations, and other researchers to support Malaysia’s pledge to reduce its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission intensity of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by up to 45% by 2030.

En el presente estudio se realizó un modelo para la elaboración de un Plan Estratégico Green Information Technology (IT) y Green Business Process Management (BPM), que permite reducir el impacto ambiental y contribuir en la sostenibilidad ambiental de una Institución de Educación Superior, basado en la Planificación Estratégica de TI de Gartner, COBIT 5 (Control Objectives for Information and related Technology) y las acciones de gobernanza de la ISO/IEC 38500 y la ISO 14031. Se establecieron 4 etapas Green: Evaluación de la Situación Actual, Dirección del Modelo de Negocios, Planeación Estratégica de adquisición, implementación y soporte y Monitorización del desempeño. Además, se diseñó una guía cuantitativa y cualitativa para determinar el nivel de sostenibilidad e interoperabilidad obtenido en cada etapa. Para la Sostenibilidad se definió los indicadores: económico con un 35% y de personas con un 25%, para la Interoperabilidad: de ingeniería y de procesos con 15% y de infraestructura con 10%. Como consecuencia de que en Ecuador no se cuenta con un marco legal que regule las acciones de Gobernabilidad Green IT de las Instituciones de Educación Superior y las investigaciones sobre Green BPM son limitadas, no se ha estructurado un Plan Estratégico Institucional productivo y responsable con el medio ambiente y que, además, sirva de base en la planificación y gestión de las operaciones y recursos informáticos. Es así que el diseño del modelo permite la alineación de los indicadores que favorecen al ahorro económico, un cambio del paradigma social/ambiental y responsabilidad de la arquitectura tecnológica. Asimismo, con la flexibilidad del modelo se podrán agregar nuevos indicadores de rendimiento ambiental (Green KPI) según las necesidades.

Achieving sustainable consumption and sustainable living is a response to the scientific and international communities’ concern that the world is living beyond its ecological systems, facing a potential crisis with regard to its environmental and other resources. All individuals, firms and communities, in relation to production of housing, transport and food consumption decisions must unite to develop sustainable change and well being. They all have a role to play in creating and promoting sustainable community development. Sustainability is an umbrella term that incorporates sustainability’s environmental, social and economic dimensions and takes on such ideas as reducing environmental impact, enhancing quality of life, minimising waste, taking a life cycle approach and looking at ecological preservation for future generations. From a business perspective sustainable green practice incorporates all elements of business from inputs procurement, manufacture, packaging design and marketing. To ensure the process of sustainable business is successful and ethical the goals of sustainability and good governance need to be managed in business practice. This chapter offers an overview of current implementation of green governance systems that relate to regional sustainability programmes and green firm’s practices. This work offers credibility to the field of sustainability research and practice by identifying and discussing all actors in the business community and how they interact with sustainability. From a regional perspective innovative primary producers and resource stewards often take up green initiatives with little or no knowledge of the governance quality and legitimacy of the schemes they are seeking to implement. This chapter looks at market-based sustainability initiatives, investigates the strengths and weaknesses of two timber certification programmes, and identifies some key governance requirements to improve green practice at the global, regional and local levels

Increasing pollution levels, consumption of electricity as well as other natural resources, and the continuous buildup of outdated computer systems in landfills are plaguing the computer systems industry. Green information technology (IT) is a sensible solution providing multiple resources and alternatives for day-to-day computer use that could reduce the negative impact on our environment without reducing the effectiveness and capabilities of the technology. This chapter describes the struggle of adoption and provides basic concepts and sustainable solutions of green IT for businesses and individuals.

Green information technology is resource efficient and effective consumption through the use of IT infrastructures to address environmental sustainability. This study aims to understand the level of awareness and practices of IT professionals towards GIT in organizations. A survey questionnaire was used, the study found that participants have a high awareness and practices of Green IT covering the efficient use of computing resources, energy conservation in an office environment, responsible disposal of electronic wastes, and demonstrate an individual contribution and commitment to GIT adoption practices in organizations. The study also found that male IT professionals have better awareness of GIT in organizations. The awareness and practices of IT professionals in GIT offers direction for organizations to strategically integrate GIT within their core business objectives and activities to attain environmental sustainability. Practical and theoretical implications are presented.
