This research aims to study the role of the local accommodation establishments (EAL) in the development of Lisbon's historic district by matching fundamental features linked to its tourist attraction with the dynamics associated to the residential function of the city such as its services, urban rehabilitation, and living experiences. Empirical analysis was applied using a qualitative approach with interviews to specialists on tourism management and to residents. This research shows changes occurring in social and commercial environment of Santa Maria Maior parish are not only caused by EAL activity. The aim is to present contributions to the definition of a more sustainable EAL management model in Lisbon. Findings show that stakeholder input can improve the balance and sustainability of both touristic and residential functions. Results of this research show that there is no agreement between the stakeholders in terms of regulatory and inspection measures. Nevertheless, stakeholders gave valuable feedback, and a summary of proposals was drawn to improve EAL supervision in Lisbon.

Abstract This article presents an overall reflection on the libraries that were assembled in scientific institutions in France and Italy in the eighteenth century using case studies and comparative approaches. It focuses in particular on five scientific academies (located in Turin, Florence, Paris and Brest) and two Florentine institutions, the Museo di Fisica e di Storia Naturale and the Santa Maria Nuova Hospital. Decisions made regarding library premises, book procurement policies, catalogue publications and whether or not to open to the public were all investments that demonstrated the role of the written culture in the identity of scholarly communities, including those (such as the naval and surgeons’ communities) whose members had long been seen as professionals firmly rooted in a manual practice that was detached from theory. This article thus shows how libraries participated in the institutionalisation of scientific activities, the definition of professional knowledge and the formation of scholarly collectives.

One obviously cannot make generalizations covering all the towns and cities of late nineteenth-century England. London was a case by itself; Liverpool a very different port from Bristol; an industrial town like Rochdale seems very remote from Dorchester. Nor is it possible to give a single brief definition of a city, though many have tried. ‘Just as there is no single form of the pre-industrial city,’ wrote R. E. Pahl, ‘urbanization as concentration of population does not lead to any single pattern of class action and conflict.’ Attempts to provide a definition of a city culminate in David Riesman's comment that the city is what we choose to make it for the purposes of analysis. One has to accept that Bristol, Dorchester, Rochdale and Liverpool were towns without exaggerating what they had in common.

The analysis of the main provisions of the transportation system reform programs in the Russian cities of Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg allows the authors to conclude that some of the items in the documents do not fully satisfy the systemic approach to the definition of city and the role of transport in it. Based on the literature review and the benchmarking of best practices of the urban transportation reforms in different countries, the authors established inter-relations between urban transport and other elements of the city — economy, ecology, society and spatial planning. With regards to the identified inter-relations, possible consequences of policy decisions were investigated. These consequences are to be considered in the formulation of the urban transportation reform program. The article concludes with the necessity to include in the urban transportation reform program not only indices related to the development of public transport but also those which define the development of other elements of the city — economy, ecology, society and spatial planning.

The neighborhood parks of Santa Maria, a municipality in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, belong to the free space system of the city, which is disconnected from distribution gaps in the urban perimeter. In this paper, the role of the urban planner in the management of these spaces is highlighted, in order to identify the local deficiencies and capacities in a productive and efficient way. A qualitative-quantitative methodology will also be presented through an online questionnaire, which sought to obtain the perception and preference of the population about the neighborhood parks. This dialogue with the community is an important tool that can effectively collaborate with the management of free spaces in medium-sized cities.
