ICT Use and Multidisciplinary Healthcare Teams in the Age of e-Health

This paper explores ICTs in the medical field specifically in the Multidisciplinary teams (MDTMs) in healthcare settings. The discussion offers benefits and disadvantages of ICTs along with implications for teams' communication and interaction. The paper also provides a few formidable challenges facing MTDMs while offering suggestions on how to overcome them in an attempt to fully experience and utilize technologies in an effective manner. Finally the paper presents areas for future research given the fact that ICT use in MTDMs will only continue to grow as e-health becomes the norm in patients care and healthcare delivery. In an attempt to accomplish these goals, Retchin's (2008) conceptual framework for inter-professional and co-managed care will be used. Retchin's framework considers the impact of temporality, urgency of care, and structure of authority. Specifically, this framework focuses on how information communication technologies can impact overall patient health care and delivery. In conclusion, the author provides guidelines and recommendations for how physicians and other health practitioners can use technologies to work with each other are provided.

Background: Despite worldwide expanding implementation of electronic health record (EHR) systems, healthcare professionals conducted limited number of studies to explore factors that might facilitate or jeopardize using these systems. This study underscores the impact of nurses’ opinions, perceptions, and computer competencies on their attitudes toward using an EHR system.Methods: With randomized sampling, a cross-sectional exploratory design was used. The sample consisted of 169 nurses who worked at a public teaching hospital in Oman. They completed self-administered questionnaire. Several standardized valid and reliable instruments were utilized.Results: Seventy-four percent of our study nurses had high positive attitudes toward the EHR system. The least ranked perception scores (60.4%) were linked to perceiving that suggestions made by nurses about the system would be taken into account. Nurses who reported that the hospital sought for suggestions for customization of the system [OR: 2.54 (95% CI: 1.09, 5.88), p = .03], who found the system as an easy-to-use clinical information system [OR: 6.53 (95% CI: 1.72, 24.75), p = .01], who reported the presence of good relationship with the system’s managing personnel [OR: 3.59 (95% CI: 1.13, 11.36), p = .03] and who reported that the system provided all needed health information [OR: 2.97 (95% CI: 1.16, 7.62), p = .02] were more likely to develop high positive attitudes toward the system.Conclusions: To better develop plans to foster the EHR system’s use facilitators and overcome its usage barriers by nursing professionals, more involvement of nurses in system’s customization endeavors is highly suggested. When the system did not disrupt workflows, it would decrease clinical errors and expand nursing productivity. In order to maximize the utilization of the system in healthcare delivery, future research work to investigate the effect of the system on other healthcare providers and inter-professional communications is pressingly needed.

In healthcare settings knowledge exchange among important stakeholders such as doctors, family and patients, and other care providers is a critical imperative. However, such a community modelled approach is missing, limited in scope or its business value not well understood. In this study, the authors illustrate the value potential and subsequent development of a business model for knowledge exchange within the healthcare delivery model outside a hospital setting. Specifically, they illustrate how Synchronous Video Consultation with social media features, in a staged approach, can support knowledge exchange among a network of community health care professionals who address global health disparities and sustain this exchange through resource generation. The authors discuss the contributions and implications of the proposed framework towards value creation in a collaborative setting in general and suggest opportunities for future research.

The majority of team leadership studies have ignored the specific context in which that leadership takes place and the cyclical correlation of inputs and processes on ongoing performance. It is our contention that leadership is a mediator of team processes and team effectiveness on ongoing functioning of multidisciplinary teams (MDT). The members of 126 multidisciplinary teams responded to a survey on several aspects related to the functioning and leadership of their teams. The results support the hypothesis that leadership does mediate the relationship between reflexivity and effectiveness (i.e. team management performance, boundary spanning and satisfaction) within the team. Theoretically, these findings challenge those of linear models that typically analyse the impact of leadership as something that happens in isolation. Future research should describe and consider not just the team type and tasks but also investigate the roles that context and time play in team leadership.

The authors describe a model for involving multidisciplinary teams of students in history education game development, focusing on the process as a learning experience. This is described in the context of immersive learning, a model for higher education that emphasizes interdisciplinary problem-solving through creative artifacts. The students involved in this multi-semester experience explored emerging theories of interactive entertainment and learning, diverging from traditional educational game designs to explore why people play games at all, the impact of design decisions on fun, and how to harness this insight to create games that are both fun and educational. The student team worked with educators and historians to create a game that would incorporate Civil War content involving the John Hunt Morgan Raid across Indiana. The game had to fit educational constructs and constrictions. Suggestions for future research and conclusions based on this experience are provided.
