Capacitive Touch Sensitive Vibro-Haptic Typing Training System for the Visually Impaired

The proposed system implements a vibro-haptic glove device which works in tandem to a customized computer keyboard with capacitive touch sensitivity, facilitating a fast-paced typing method for the visually impaired. A normal keyboard is retro-fitted with a “capacitive sense” membrane that activates on human touch, along with a pair of fingerless haptic gloves with vibrators on each finger and a pair of Bluetooth earphones. The visually impaired user receives audible and haptic cues facilitating learning to type the correct key using the right finger on the computer keyboard. This utilizes the Passive-Haptic-Learning (PHL) paradigm for fast paced multisensory learning. A group of blind students were chosen and trained on this system for one month. There were pre and post training assessments conducted, and their scores compared. The findings showcased positive results.

As the world economy is becoming globalized, more domestic businesses are branching to overseas. Thereupon the number of expatriate workers who are getting assigned to overseas are increasing, and needs for systematic selection and training system for overseas expatriate workers are in dire needs. Nevertheless researches in this area are not enough and still inadequate level domestically. Therefore we developed the Global Competency Scale (GCS) with the purpose of the local businesses to use it to predict the possibility of successful overseas job performance and to select and train the right overseas expatriate workers. To develop the scale we conducted researches on documentations and interviews with former overseas expatriate workers and expatriate program managers in human resource department(HRD). Based on these results we developed 14 initial factors with 138 items. Using theses items we conducted both on & offline survey to people who work at global and multinational companies in Korea. With the 381 people's survey results, we implemented the cross validity. After cross validating we generated final 6 factors with 24 items. The GCS score we developed in this research shows that the degree of their goal achievement during past overseas experience and level of their satisfaction was significantly high in those criterion variables proving the criterion-related validity. Especially the GCS we developed in this research shows that after controlling the effect of English skills, still appear to have significant effect on criterion variables. Finally based on research results we discussed academical and operational implication and limitations for the further researches.

Background: According to the WHO report, around 4.07% of the world's population is visually impaired. About 90% of the visually impaired users live in the lower economic strata. In the fast moving technology, most of the invention misses the need of these people. Mainly the technologies were designed for mainstream people; visually impaired people always find an inability to access it. This inability arises primarily for reasons such as cost, for example, Perkins Brailler costs 80-248 dollars for the simple purpose of Braille input. Another major reason is the hassle of carrying the big equipment. Objective: Keeping all this in mind and making technology as their best friends, MAGIC-1 has been designed. The goal is to provide a solution in terms of an application, which helps the visually impaired user in their daily life activities. Method: The proposed solution assists visually impaired users through smart phone technology. If visually impaired users ever wished to have a touched guide into a smart phone, MAGIC-1 has the solution that consolidates all the important features in their daily activities. Results: The performance of the solution as a whole and its individual features in terms of usability, utility and other metrics, etc. has been tested with sample visually impaired users. Moreover, their performances in term of Errors per Word and Words per Minute have been observed. Conclusion: MAGIC-I, the proposed solution works as an assistant of visually impaired users to overcome their daily struggles and stay more connected to the world. A visually impaired user can communicate via their mobile devices with features like eyes free texting using braille, voice calling etc. They can easily take help in an emergency situation with the options of SOS emergency calling and video assistance.

Robotic assisted rehabilitation, taking advantage of neuroplasticity, has been shown to be helpful in regaining some degree of gait performance. Robot-applied movement along with voluntary efferent motor commands coordinated with the robot allows optimization of motion training. We present the design and characteristics of a novel foot-based 6-degree-of-freedom (DOF) robot-assisted gait training system where the limb trajectory mirrored the normal walking gait. The goal of this study was to compare robot-assisted gait to normal walking gait, where the limb moved independently without robotics. Motion analysis was used to record the three-dimensional kinematics of the right lower extremity. Walking motion data were determined and transferred to the robotic motion application software for inclusion in the robotic trials where the robot computer software was programmed to produce a gait pattern in the foot equivalent to the gait pattern recorded from the normal walking gait trial. Results demonstrated that ankle; knee and hip joint motions produced by the robot are consistent with the joint motions in walking gait. We believe that this control algorithm provides a rationale for use in future rehabilitation, targeting robot-assisted training in people with neuromuscular disabilities such as stroke.

The school inclusion involves much more than the right to a place in an institution of regular education. It encompasses the right of the student to rely on various pedagogical alternatives, according to their specific characteristics to help in the teachinglearning process and become subject in the construction of knowledge. Thinking about the difficulties of visually impaired students being included in the regular school and as data gathered through research, it was found restricted access to literary wo rks to the visually impaired. Thus students of the Curso Técnico em Publicidade from the Instituto Estadual de Educação Visconde de Cairu, Santa Rosa, Rio Grande do Sul, formed a study group in order to find alternatives to fill this gap. Came the idea of developing talking books from the tales and children's stories and thus was born Audiobooks Project. Throughout the project, notes, fiel d diaries were being made and were being collected materials so that each step was documented. This study discusses the development process Audiobooks Project, from its initial conception to distribution of materials to schools in the area. It is expected to provid e support for similar projects that are produced or that new pedagogical alternatives are designed, benefiting all special students and contributing to the construction of knowledge and effective citizenship.

Abstract There are still people with disabilities in society who consider them a burden. However, in fact, every child with special needs such as a blind people has the right to have a decent life like any other community. So, we need an orphanage for the blind people with a blind space approach that aims to provide social services to blind children by helping and guiding them towards reasonable personal development and having work skills, so that they can be independent, live properly and have responsibility, both for himself, his family, and society. This research used a qualitative descriptive method by collecting literature studies from national and international journal articles regarding the blind orphanage, collecting data related to the research location and conducting a comparative study of similar buildings in Central Jakarta. This research resulted in a blind orphanage design with a blind space in Jakarta approach that provides disability facilities for visually impaired people, educational facilities, and activity facilities for visually impaired people. It is hoped that the design of the Blind Orphanage can accommodate the activities of the Blind people in Jakarta.

<p>Introduction : A lot of research has been done to determine if handwriting or typing note influenced short-term memory, however, the results obtained are still controversial. Therefore this study is structured to see the effect of note taking methods by handwriting and typing on short-term memory.</p><p>Aim : The aims of this study were to increase the performance of students in Faculty of Medicine Pelita Harapan University as well as providing the right and effective method of taking notes.<strong></strong></p><p>Method : Experimental study design was chosen in this study. Study population is students of faculty of medicine Pelita Harapan University batch 2015. 40 samples will be divide randomly into two, one group will take a note by handwriting and another by typing. Each group is required to watch a video about 15 minutes long.  The results were analyzed statistically using T-test.</p><p>Result : The average of  new information that can be remembered by group that take a note by handwriting significantly (p&lt;0,05) higher than group than take a note by typing with a p-value of 0,009.</p><p>Conclusion : Take a note by handwriting allows people to remember more new information than typing.</p>

<p>Reproduction of copyright protected material in formats that are accessible to the blind and visually impaired persons constitutes a copyright infringement unless there are specific limitations and exceptions in place. Most countries do not have copyright limitations and exceptions for the benefit of the visually impaired in their copyright laws. This has contributed to the issue of book famine, meaning the unsatisfactory access to copyright protected material for the blind and visually impaired.  This thesis examines the claims of the visually impaired for improved access to copyright protected works in the context of the interface of human rights and intellectual property rights. This research demonstrates that insufficient access to copyright protected material is discriminatory against the visually impaired and negatively affects their human rights such as the right to education, information, health, employment, culture, and science. Moreover, the thesis analyses the international and domestic copyright law’s impact on the needs of the visually impaired. In analysing the international copyright law, the thesis evaluates the Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works by Visually Impaired Persons and Persons with Print Disabilities.  Highlighting the insufficient consideration for the rights of the visually impaired in domestic and international copyright laws including the Marrakesh Treaty, the thesis proposes adoption of a human rights framework for copyright law to the extent that it affects the human rights of the visually impaired. Such framework requires copyright law to accommodate those human rights of the visually impaired that are dependent on access to copyright protected material.  The thesis offers two categories of measures for creation of a human rights framework for copyright to the extent that it affects the human rights of the visually impaired. The measures include optimisation of already available options and adoption of new mechanisms. The first category discusses minimum mandatory copyright limitations and exceptions and the possibility to harmonise them. The second category covers extra measures such as clarifying the implications of different human rights and copyrights in the context of the book famine; ensuring compatibility of human rights and copyright when adopting policy and law; and, regular monitoring of the impact of copyright law on human rights.</p>

Everyone has the right to learn and to succeed in education. For people with certain disabilities, learning can be a challenging task, and proper use of certain assistive technologies can significantly ease the challenge, and help the learners to succeed. For teachers in special education, knowing existing assistive technology is an important step towards the proper use of those technologies and success in special education. This chapter provides a guide for teachers about assistive technology and its uses in special education. Assistive technology for people with learning difficulties, assistive technology for the visually impaired, and assistive technology for people with hearing difficulties will be discussed. Since online learning and the Internet are becoming trends in distance education, this chapter will focus on assistive technologies for Web-based distance learning, including assistive technologies for better human-computer interaction. Selecting more appropriate assistive technology for a given learner with a certain learning disability, among many choices, will be discussed.

This chapter by James Goldrick examines the creation of a sophisticated learning and training system for the anti-U-boat war, which is one of the most significant elements of the Atlantic campaign, critical to the effectiveness of the escort units of the RN and RCN. This system's development took place as both services were forced to adapt rapidly to profound changes in their operational environments. That development faced many challenges, not only from a scarcity of resources, but from the necessity to develop sufficient understanding of the problem. The "master-apprentice" culture of professionalization managed through long service would not serve under the pressure of the oceanic small-ship war. The effort had to be industrialized. Acceptable levels of collective efficiency only became possible when the right equipment and training assets, sufficiently – even if barely – experienced personnel, and proven tactical doctrine could be brought together to provide the necessary fidelity within the training experience. From the outset, this would always be a much more complex and resource-intensive operation than the straightforward working-up of individual units.

Introduction As the number of people with visual impairments (that is, those who are blind or have low vision) is continuously increasing, rehabilitation and engineering researchers have identified the need to design sensory-substitution devices that would offer assistance and guidance to these people for performing navigational tasks. Auditory and haptic cues have been shown to be an effective approach towards creating a rich spatial representation of the environment, so they are considered for inclusion in the development of assistive tools that would enable people with visual impairments to acquire knowledge of the surrounding space in a way close to the visually based perception of sighted individuals. However, achieving efficiency through a sensory substitution device requires extensive training for visually impaired users to learn how to process the artificial auditory cues and convert them into spatial information. Methods Considering all the potential advantages game-based learning can provide, we propose a new method for training sound localization and virtual navigational skills of visually impaired people in a 3D audio game with hierarchical levels of difficulty. The training procedure is focused on a multimodal (auditory and haptic) learning approach in which the subjects have been asked to listen to 3D sounds while simultaneously perceiving a series of vibrations on a haptic headband that corresponds to the direction of the sound source in space. Results The results we obtained in a sound-localization experiment with 10 visually impaired people showed that the proposed training strategy resulted in significant improvements in auditory performance and navigation skills of the subjects, thus ensuring behavioral gains in the spatial perception of the environment.
