Understanding the processing of tactile information is crucial for the development of biofeedback interventions that target cutaneous mechanoreceptors. Mechanics of the skin have been shown to influence cutaneous tactile sensitivity. It has been established that foot skin mechanics are altered due to foot posture, but whether these changes affect cutaneous sensitivity are unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential effect of posture-mediated skin deformation about the ankle joint on perceptual measures of foot skin sensitivity. Participants (N = 20) underwent perceptual skin sensitivity testing on either the foot sole (N = 10) or dorsum (N = 10) with the foot positioned in maximal dorsiflexion/toe extension, maximal plantarflexion/toe flexion, and a neutral foot posture. Perceptual tests included touch sensitivity, stretch sensitivity, and spatial acuity. Regional differences in touch sensitivity were found across the foot sole (p < 0.001) and dorsum (p < 0.001). Touch sensitivity also significantly increased in postures where the skin was compressed (p = 0.001). Regional differences in spatial acuity were found on the foot sole (p = 0.002) but not dorsum (p = 0.666). Spatial acuity was not significantly altered by posture across the foot sole and dorsum, other than an increase in sensitivity at the medial arch in the dorsiflexion posture (p = 0.006). Posture*site interactions were found for stretch sensitivity on the foot sole and dorsum in both the transverse and longitudinal directions (p < 0.005). Stretch sensitivity increased in postures where the skin was pre-stretched on both the foot sole and dorsum. Changes in sensitivity across locations and postures were believed to occur due to concurrent changes in skin mechanics, such as skin hardness and thickness, which follows our previous findings. Future cutaneous biofeedback interventions should be applied with an awareness of these changes in skin sensitivity, to maximize their effectiveness for foot sole and dorsum input.

AbstractNeurotypical individuals have subjective sensitivity differences that may overlap with more heavily studied clinical populations. However, it is not known whether these subjective differences in sensory sensitivity are modality specific, or lead to behavioral shifts. In our experiment, we measured the oral touch sensitivity and food texture awareness differences in two neurotypical groups having either a high or low subjective sensitivity in touch modality. To measure oral touch sensitivity, individuals performed discrimination tasks across three types of stimuli (liquid, semisolid, and solid). Next, they performed two sorting exercises for two texture-centric food products: cookies and crackers. The stimuli that required low oral processing (liquid) were discriminated at higher rates by participants with high subjective sensitivity. Additionally, discrimination strategies between several foods in the same product space were different across the groups, and each group used attributes other than food texture as differentiating characteristics. The results show subjective touch sensitivity influences behavior (sensitivity and awareness). However, we show that the relationship between subjective touch sensitivity and behavior generalizes beyond just touch to other sensory modalities.

There are sex differences in somatosensory sensitivity. Circulating estrogens appear to have a pronociceptive effect that explains why females are reported to be more sensitive to pain than males. Although itch symptoms develop during pregnancy in many women, the underlying mechanism of female-specific pruritus is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that estradiol, but not progesterone, enhances histamine-evoked scratching behavior indicative of itch in female rats. Estradiol increased the expression of the spinal itch mediator, gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), and increased the histamine-evoked activity of itch-processing neurons that express the GRP receptor (GRPR) in the spinal dorsal horn. The enhancement of itch behavior by estradiol was suppressed by intrathecal administration of a GRPR blocker. In vivo electrophysiological analysis showed that estradiol increased the histamine-evoked firing frequency and prolonged the response of spinal GRP-sensitive neurons in female rats. On the other hand, estradiol did not affect the threshold of noxious thermal pain and decreased touch sensitivity, indicating that estradiol separately affects itch, pain, and touch modalities. Thus, estrogens selectively enhance histamine-evoked itch in females via the spinal GRP/GRPR system. This may explain why itch sensation varies with estrogen levels and provides a basis for treating itch in females by targeting GRPR.

This paper describes the design of a piezoelectric-driven hydraulically amplified Braille-flexible bump device that enables the flexible formation of Braille characters. A piezoelectric vibrator is used to excite fluid resonance in a cavity, and displacement is realized by compressing the fluid, allowing Braille character dots to be formed. First, the structural design and working principle of the device, as well as the method used to drive the fluid, are explained. Expressions for the output displacement and amplification ratio of the flexible film and piezoelectric vibrator are then obtained through kinetic analysis of the system unit. Subsequently, the structural parameters that affect the output displacement and the liquid amplification are described. Finally, experimental tests of the system are explained. The results indicate that the output displacement of the contact formed by the flexible film reaches 0.214 mm, satisfying the requirements of the touch sensitivity standard for the blind, when the fluid cavity diameter measures 31 mm and the resonance frequency is 375.4 Hz. The corresponding water discharge is 8.8 mL. This study proves that constructing a Braille bump device in this way is both feasible and effective.

Introduction: Hypochromatic macules with altered sensitivity are the first manifestations of skin leprosy. Validation of this sensory loss assists in the confirmation of the clinical diagnosis. Aims: The aim of the study was to quantify the loss of sensation in leprosy lesions using the Semmes-Weinstein monofilament to strengthen the clinical diagnosis mainly of macular forms. Methods: Seventy-four hypochromatic macules in the macular leprosy subgroup, 27 typical borderline leprosy subgroup lesions and 49 macules of other macular dermatoses (non-leprosy group) were evaluated using the 0.05 g force Semmes-Weinstein monofilament to quantify the alteration of sensitivity within and outside of the lesions. The esthesiometric change index was established as the total number of points with altered sensation divided by the total number of tested points within the lesions to calculate the internal esthesiometric change index and outside the lesions to calculate the peripheral esthesiometric change index; these indexes were calculated for all groups. The difference (Δ) between the esthesiometric change indices of the lesional area and the adjacent skin was calculated for the leprosy and nonleprosy groups. Results: The percentage of points with touch sensitivity alterations within the macular and typical borderline leprosy lesions was higher in leprosy than in the non-leprosy group. The borderline and macular leprosy presented higher esthesiometric change index within injured areas than outside injured areas or in the nonleprosy group (P < 0.005). When internal esthesiometric change index values in the macular and borderline leprosy groups were higher than 0.53 and 0.5, respectively, the receiver operating characteristic curve showed 98% sensitivity and approximately 99% specificity for both groups (P < 0.0001). Regarding the difference between indices, borderline and macular leprosy had values that were higher and closer to one than in the nonleprosy group (P < 0.0001), with 100% sensitivity and 96.5% specificity for leprosy diagnosis when ΔLG was higher than 0.34. A limitation was the inability to perform a double-blind study. Conclusion: Semmes-Weinstein esthesiometry is a simple, useful and low-cost tool to quantify the focal alteration of cutaneous sensitivity to improve clinical leprosy diagnosis, especially for macular lesions.

Ageing is accompanied by a steady decline in touch sensitivity and acuity. Conversely, pleasant touch, such as experienced during a caress, is even more pleasant in old age. There are many physiological changes that might explain these perceptual changes, but researchers have not yet identified any specific mechanisms. Here, we review both the perceptual and structural changes to the touch system that are associated with ageing. The structural changes include reduced elasticity of the skin in older people, as well as reduced numbers and altered morphology of skin tactile receptors. Effects of ageing on the peripheral and central nervous systems include demyelination, which affects the timing of neural signals, as well as reduced numbers of peripheral nerve fibres. The ageing brain also undergoes complex changes in blood flow, metabolism, plasticity, neurotransmitter function, and, for touch, the body map in primary somatosensory cortex. Although several studies have attempted to find a direct link between perceptual and structural changes, this has proved surprisingly elusive. We also highlight the need for more evidence regarding age-related changes in peripheral nerve function in the hairy skin, as well as the social and emotional aspects of touch.

The multiple frequency driving method (MFDM) capacitive touch system (CTS), which drives transmit (TX) electrodes in parallel, has been developed to improve the touch-sensitivity of large touch screens at high speed. However, when driving multiple TX electrodes at the same time, TX signals are merged through the touch panel, which results in increasing the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of combined signals. Due to the high PAPR, the signal is distorted out of the power amplifier’s linear range, causing a touch malfunction. The MFDM CTS can avoid this problem by reducing the drive voltage or partially driving the TX electrodes in parallel. However, these methods cause a significant performance drop with respect to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the MFDM systems. This paper proposes a stack method which reduces PAPR effectively without the performance degradation of MFDM and achieves real-time touch sensitivity in large display panels. The proposed method allocates a suitable phase for each TX electrode to reduce the peak power of combined signals. Instead of investigating all of the phases for the total number of TX electrodes, the optimal phase is estimated from the highest frequency to the lowest one and fixed one by one, which can reduce the required time to find a suitable phase considerably. As a result, it enables high-speed sensing of multi-touch on a large touch screen and effectively reduces PAPR to secure high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR). Through experiments, it was verified that the proposed method in this paper has an SNR of 39.36 dB, achieving a gain of 19.35 and 5.98 dB compared to the existing touch system method and the algorithm used in the communication system, respectively.

Current evidence of how human sex-related differences in riders and handlers may influence horse behaviour is limited. The Equine Behaviour Assessment and Research Questionnaire (E-BARQ) was used to collect demographic data on riders and handlers (n = 1420) and behavioural data on their horses. It includes demographic items about the sex of the respondent and how frequently the horse has been ridden or handled by male and female humans. The questionnaire then gathers observations on the horse’s behaviour on the ground and under saddle or when driven. Using E-BARQ’s battery of 97 questions, the current study showed differences in ridden and non-ridden horse behaviour that were related to the sex of the rider or handler. Data were evaluated using multivariate analysis and revealed that horses handled by male humans were significantly more difficult to catch (t-value = −3.11; p = 0.002) and significantly more defensive when approached (t-value = −2.104; p = 0.035), but significantly less likely to pull on the reins/brace the neck or toss their head (t-value 1.980; p = 0.048) than horses handled more frequently by female humans. The differences found between male and female horse handlers suggest that sex is an important factor to consider when understanding equine behaviour. Our study explored reported differences in confidence, handling and working compliance and touch sensitivity among horses ridden and handled by male and female humans and suggested further research into how these differences are gendered.

Introduction: The spinal cord injury is a public heatlh problem, and it can have three different origens: traumatic, compressive and congenital. The consequences are partial or total insufficiency of the spinal cord due to the interruption of motor and sensory nervous tracts. This injury results in clinical manifestations such as: autonomic dysreflexia, conduction disorders and loss of pain and touch sensitivity. Objectives: To describe the main cardiac conduction disorders on patients with spinal cord injury trough the guiding question: “What are the most common arrhytmic disorders in patients with spinal cord injury?” Methods: A integrative review was made in the MEDLINE and LILACS databases combining the MeSH descriptors: ‘Arrhytmias, cardiac” and “Spinal cord injuries”. Furthermore, the inclusion criteria was articles produced in the past ten years that answer the guiding question. Results: After na analysis, 6 out of 15 articles were selected to compound this review. The main disorders founded were tachycardia, sinus node dysfunction, atrial and ventricular fibrillation and bradychardia, the most founded disorder. There was also descripted the possibility for these patients to envolve into a distributive choque. Conclusion: Bradycardia was the main arrhythmic impairment found in patients with spinal cord injury, followed by ventricular and atrial fibrillation and tachycardia, with the severity of bradyarrhythmias being associated with the level and severity of the spinal cord injury
