Segment floating is a common problem met in the construction of large-diameter crossing-river shield tunnel. The factors affecting segment floating are discussed first and analyzed by numerical simulation, including the properties of grouting material, the speed of shield tunneling, grouting pressure difference, the tunnel longitudinal stiffness, frictional force between segment rings and weight of the supporting system. The simulation results indicate that segment floating will reduce by shortening slurry’s initial solidification time, slowing shielding speed, improving the tunnel longitudinal stiffness as well as increasing the frictional force between segment rings. And some measures are given such as applying new rapid-setting slurries, shear pins, rubber mats with high friction coefficient and pre-stressed bolts

Traditional monitoring techniques are faced with the problems of low acquisition frequency and easy to be affected by the construction environment during the shield tunneling, which cannot meet the actual needs of timeliness monitoring of surrounding environmental impact on shield tunnel construction. Based on this actual demand, a wireless sensor network (WSN) system was used to monitor the response of shield tunnel segments and surrounding buildings during the shield tunneling in this study. According to the result of the signal transmission test, an optimization scheme of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) sensor layout is designed to improve the monitoring efficiency of the WSN system. Through the comparative analysis of WSN system monitoring data and traditional monitoring data, it is found that, with the increasing distance between the monitoring section and the tunnel face, the convergence value of tunnel lining clearance gradually tends to be stable, and the wireless monitoring results of transverse clearance convergence of the tunnel in this section are consistent with the overall deformation trend of the convergence gauge monitoring results. This study also simulated the shield tunneling adjacent buildings using a nonlinear finite element method. A parameter sensitivity analysis of the support pressure of the excavation face and the grouting pressure at the tail of the shield is carried out. The results show that the surface settlement can be reduced by properly increasing the grouting pressure and the support pressure of the excavation face. Moreover, increasing the support pressure of the excavation face has a better inhibition effect on the settlement of the surface soil than increasing the grouting pressure.

As to shield tunneling, that soil is reinforced into the void is one of the most important reasons which cause the ground settlement, and always most important factor in the tunnel construction and the relative research. The numerical simulation studies presented in this paper focus on the different grouting pressure causing different ground settlement, plastic area and stress growth behavior. Based on the simulation results and the engineering ground settlement limit, propose reasonable synchronous slurry injection pressure and the relative method of controlling ground settlement. Propose reasonable suggestion for the determination of grouting pressure during shield construction.

Modular design, Axiomatic design (AD) and Theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ) have been increasingly popularized in concept design of modern mechanical product. Each method has their own advantages and drawbacks. The benefit of modular design is reducing the product design period, and AD has the capability of problem analysis, while TRIZ’s expertise is innovative idea generation. According to the complementarity of these three approaches, an innovative and systematic methodology is proposed to design big complex mechanical system. Firstly, the module partition is executed based on scenario decomposition. Then, the behavior attributes of modules are listed to find the design contradiction, including motion form, spatial constraints, and performance requirements. TRIZ tools are employed to deal with the contradictions between behavior attributes. The decomposition and mapping of functional requirements and design parameters are carried out to construct the structural hierarchy of each module. Then, modules are integrated considering the connections between each other. Finally, the operation steps in application scenario are designed in temporal and spatial dimensions. Design of cutter changing robot for shield tunneling machine is taken as an example to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Segment assembling is one of the principle processes during tunnel construction using shield tunneling machines. The segment erector is a robotic manipulator powered by a hydraulic system to assemble prefabricated concrete segments onto the excavated tunnel surface. Nowadays, automation of the segment erector has become one of the definite developing trends to further improve the efficiency and safety during construction; thus, closed-loop motion control is an essential technology. Within the segment erector, the lifting gantry is driven by dual cylinders to lift heavy segments in the radial direction. Different from the dual-cylinder mechanism used in other machines such as forklifts, the lifting gantry usually works at an inclined angle, leading to unbalanced loads on the two sides. Although strong guide rails are applied to ensure synchronization, the gantry still occasionally suffers from chattering, “pull-and-drag”, or even being stuck in practice. Therefore, precise motion tracking control as well as high-level synchronization of the dual cylinders have become essential for the lifting gantry. In this study, a complete dynamics model of the dual-cylinder lifting gantry is constructed, considering the linear motion as well as the additional rotational motion of the crossbeam, which reveals the essence of poor synchronization. Then, a two-level synchronization control scheme is synthesized. The thrust allocation is designed to coordinate the dual cylinders and keep the rotational angle of the crossbeam within a small range. The motion tracking controller is designed based on the adaptive robust control theory to guarantee the linear motion tracking precision. The theoretical performance is analyzed with corresponding proof. Finally, comparative simulations are conducted and the results show that the proposed scheme achieves high-precision motion tracking performance and simultaneous high-level synchronization of dual cylinders under unbalanced loads.

In more and more complicated urban building environment, a new construction method that metro engineering is constructed by large-diameter shield and shallow mining method can be regarded as a great attempt in China. By taking the Gaojiayuan station of Beijing metro line 14 as an engineering background, the main construction steps for the platform of the metro station built by a large-size shield with an outer diameter of 10 m and the Pile-Beam-Arch (PBA) method are introduced. Based on the soil-structure interaction theory, a two-dimensional finite element model is used to simulate the shield tunneling and the platform construction by the PBA method to enlarge the shield tunnel. The ground deformation and structural stress of the platform are predicted. The numerical results can be regarded as a valuable reference for the application of the new construction method in Beijing metro line 14.
