This paper discusses results of experiments on blind bolted end plate joints to concrete-filled thin-walled steel tubular (CFTST) columns. Four exterior joints to CFTST columns subjected to cyclic loadings. A feature of this novel joint is the use of the blind bolts and extensions to these bolts into the concrete-filled square steel tubular column. Failure modes, moment-rotation hysteretic curves and energy consumption of the connections were analyzed. Further, the connection rigidity and ductility were also elevated by present specifications. The test results showed that the end plate type and the steel tube thickness affect the seismic behaviour of the typed blind bolted end plate joints. The proposed joint has reasonable strength, stiffness and ductility by taking reasonable end plate type, steel tube thickness and blind bolt anchorage; its ultimate connection rotation satisfies the ductility design requirements, and could be reliably and safety used in low-layer or multi-layer composite frames.

The application of concrete filled steel tubes (CFSTs) as composite members has widely been used around the world and is becoming popular day by day for structural application especially in earthquake regions. This paper indicates that an experimental study was conducted to comprehend the behaviour of T-stub end plates connected to concrete filled thin-walled steel tube (CFTST) with different types of bolts and are subjected to pull-out load. The bolts used are normal type bolt M20 grade 8.8 and Lindapter Hollo-bolt HB16 and HB20. A series of 10 mm thick T-stub end plates were fastened to 2 mm CFTST of 200 mm x 200 mm in cross-section. All of the specimens were subjected to monotonic pull-out load until failure. Based on test results, the Lidapter Hollo-bolts showed better performance compare to normal bolts. The highest ultimate limit load for T-stub end plate fasten with Lindapter Hollo-bolt is four times higher than with normal bolt although all end plates show similar behaviour and failure mode patterns. It can be concluded that T-stub end plate with Lindapter Hollo-bolt shows a better performance in the service limit and ultimate limit states according to the regulations in the design codes.

This paper studies the shear performance of the connection with the external stiffening ring between the square steel tubular column and unequal-depth steel beams. Two specimens of interior column connections were tested under low cyclic loading. The deformation characteristics and failure modes exhibited by the test phenomena can be summarized as: (1) two specimens all exhibited shear deformation in steel tube web of the panel zone and (2) weld fracture in the panel zone and plastic hinge failure at beam end were observed. Besides, load-displacement behaviors and strain distributions have been also discussed. The nonlinear finite element models were developed to verify the test results. Comparative analyses of the bearing capacity, failure mode, and load-paths between the equal-depth and unequal-depth beam models have been carried out.

Two columns of thin-walled concrete-filled steel tubes (CFSTs), in which tube seams are connected by self-tapping screws, are axial compression tested and FEM simulated; the influence of local buckling on the column compression bearing capacity is discussed. Failure modes of square thin-wall CFST columns are, first, steel tube plate buckling and then the collapse of steel and concrete in some corner edge areas. Interaction between concrete and steel makes the column continue to withstand higher forces after buckling appears. A large deflection analysis for tube elastic buckling reflects that equivalent uniform stress of the steel plate in the buckling area can reach yield stress and that steel can supply enough designing stress. Aiming at failure modes of square thin-walled CFST columns, a B-type section is proposed as an improvement scheme. Comparing the analysis results, the B-type section can address both the problems of corner collapse and steel plate buckling. This new type section can better make full use of the stress of the concrete material and the steel material; this type section can also increase the compression bearing capacity of the column.

Concrete-filled steel tubes (CFSTs) have been introduced to expedite construction and increase the confinement of concrete by the steel tube. While changing the confinement level through the use of expansive additives (EAs) will have an impact on the performance of CFSTs, limited information is available on the behavior of expansive concrete-filled steel tubular (ECFST) columns. The objective of this study is thus twofold: (i) to experimentally assess the behavior of axially loaded ECFSTs, and (ii) to investigate the correlation between the test results and those obtained from prediction approaches. The experimental program of this study consists of testing four 1500 mm CFST/ECFST columns with 153.6 mm outer diameter and 3 mm thickness. The ECFST specimens are divided into two subgroups with 0% and 12% EA dosage and two concrete mixtures, 16 and 37 MPa. The results indicate that the latter is the most promising mixture since it results in a significant enhancement of 64% in the axial load capacity of ECFST columns compare with CFSTs. The study also recommends employing specific confined concrete models with the existing code prediction approaches to arrive at the best correlation with test results.

In order to look into the causes of fire response and post-fire bearing capacity of the steel tubular columns protected with different materials, the fire test was conducted for a set of circular steel tubes protected with different materials such as gypsum fireproof panel, bamboo plywood and the ordinary lumber core plywood, and the steel tube without any protective material. The fire response temperature of surface of steel tubes is measured and the axial compressive bearing capacity of the specimens after fire are tested and analyzed. The test results show that gypsum fireproof panel has the best fire protection characteristics, the ordinary lumber core plywood and bamboo plywood can also retard rising of the surface temperature of the steel tubes during the initial 35min although they are combustible materials. It is found that the post-fire bearing capacity of the steel tubes protected with different materials varies evidently, and the maximum value of response temperature has the greatest effect.

Axial compression tests were carried out on 6 square steel tube confined concrete short columns and 6 BFRP square pipe confined concrete axial compression tests. The concrete strength grades were C30, C40, and C50. The test results show that the failure modes of steel pipe and BFRP pipe are obviously different, and the BFRP pipe undergoes brittle failure. Compared with the short columns of concrete confined by BFRP pipes, the ultimate bearing capacity of axial compression is increased by -76.46%, -76.01%, and -73.06%, and the ultimate displacements are -79.20%, -80.78%, -71.71%.

In this paper, a new composite floor system using cold-formed thin-walled C steel channel embedment and a foam concrete slab is developed. This new type of floor system features lightweight, high fire-resistant, and high anti-corrosion features, and can be used for multi-story buildings, providing a promising new alternative floor system for the construction market. Two four-point bending tests were carried out to investigate the flexural capacity and failure modes of this new type of composite slab. Based on the test results, a nonlinear finite element model was developed using general software package ABAQUS. The model is validated using the test results. Using this model, parametric studies were performed to study the key parameters affecting the structural behavior of this new type of composite floor system. Different parameters such as density of the foam concrete, grade of the cold-formed thin-walled C steel channel embedment, and spacing of the cold-formed thin-walled C steel channel were investigated. Their contributions to the overall moment capacity and their effect on the failure modes of this type of composite slab were discovered. Based on experimental results and FE results, design formulas for ultimate flexural capacity of this new type of composite slabs were also developed which can accurately predict their flexural capacity.

This paper presents the theoretical and experimental results of concrete-filled steel tube columns subjected to axially compression. A total of 6 specimens with outer square sections reinforced by inner cicular steel tube were constructed for experimental investigation. The ultimate strengths of the columns from tests were obtained. The theoretical strengths of the columns were also investigated based on unified strength theory, and compared with the test results. Good agreement can be observed from the comparison.
