Traditional pattern classification methods are not always efficient because sample data sets are sometimes incomplete and there are exceptions and counter examples. In this paper, SOFM neural network is applied in pattern classification of two-dimensional vectors after analysis of its structure and algorithm. The method to establish SOFM network via MATLAB7.0 is introduced before the network is applied to classify two-dimensional vectors. The adjustment process of weight vectors together with classification performance of SOFM model are also tested in the condition of different number of training steps. The simulation results show that the classification approach based on SOFM model is effective because of its fast speed, high accuracy and strong generalization ability.

Abstract In this study, a deep neural network classifier is proposed for the classification of coronary artery disease medical data sets. The proposed classifier is tested on reference CAD data sets from the literature and also compared with popular representative classification methods regarding its classification performance. Experimental results show that the deep neural network classifier offers much better accuracy, sensitivity and specificity rates when compared with other methods. The proposed method presents itself as an easily accessible and cost-effective alternative to currently existing methods used for the diagnosis of CAD and it can be applied for easily checking whether a given subject under examination has at least one occluded coronary artery or not.

Standard back propagation (BP) neural network has disadvantages such as slow convergence speed, local minimum and difficulty in definition of network structure. In this paper, an learning vector quantization (LVQ) neural network classifier is established, then it is applied in pattern classification of two-dimensional vectors on a plane. To test its classification ability, the classification results of LVQ neural network and BP neural network are compared with each other. The simulation result shows that compared with classification method based on BP neural network, the one based on LVQ neural network has a shorter learning time. Besides, its requirements for learning samples and the number of competing layers are also lower. Therefore it is an effective classification method which is powerful in classification of two-dimensional vectors on a plane.

This paper presents the identification and classification of steel cord failures in the conveyor belt core based on an analysis of a two-dimensional image of magnetic field changes recorded using the Diagbelt system around scanned failures in the test belt. The obtained set of identified changes in images, obtained for numerous parameters settings of the device, were the base for statistical analysis. This analysis makes it possible to determine the Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient between the parameters being changed and the image of the failures. In the second stage of the research, artificial intelligence methods were applied to construct a multilayer neural network (MLP) and to teach it appropriate identification of damage. In both methods, the same data sets were used, which made it possible to compare methods.

This paper proposes a condition monitoring method for the early defect detection in a chain sprocket drive (CSD) system and classification of fault types before a catastrophic failure occurs. In the operation of a CSD system, early defect detection is very useful in preventing system failure. In this work, eight fault types associated with the CSD system components, such as the gear tooth, bearings, and drive motor shaft, were arbitrarily damaged and incorporated into the CSD system. To detect the fault signals during the CSD system operation, the vibration was measured using an Internet of Things (IoT) device, which features a wireless MEMS accelerometer, Bluetooth function, Wi-Fi function, and battery. The IoT device was mounted on the gearbox housing. The measured one-dimensional vibration time-series was transformed into time-scale images using continuous wavelet transform (CWT). A convolution neural network (CNN) was employed to extract deep features embedded in the images, which are closely related to fault types. To update the learning parameters of the CNN, the RMSprop learning algorithm was applied, and the CNN was trained using 500 image samples. Multiple-classification performance of the trained network was tested using 100 image samples. Feature maps for different fault types were obtained from the final CNN convolution layer. For the visualization of fault types, t-stochastic neighbor embedding was employed and applied to the feature maps to convert high-dimensional data into two-dimensional data. Two-dimensional features enabled excellent classification of the eight fault types and one normal type.

Online feedback is an effective way of communication between government departments and citizens. However, the daily high number of public feedbacks has increased the burden on government administrators. The deep learning method is good at automatically analyzing and extracting deep features of data, and then improving the accuracy of classification prediction. In this study, we aim to use the text classification model to achieve the automatic classification of public feedbacks to reduce the work pressure of administrator. In particular, a convolutional neural network model combined with word embedding and optimized by differential evolution algorithm is adopted. At the same time, we compared it with seven common text classification models, and the results show that the model we explored has good classification performance under different evaluation metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score.

AbstractWe propose a Bayesian method for the classification of 16S rRNA metagenomic profiles of bacterial abundance, by introducing a Poisson-Dirichlet-Multinomial hierarchical model for the sequencing data, constructing a prior distribution from sample data, calculating the posterior distribution in closed form; and deriving an Optimal Bayesian Classifier (OBC). The proposed algorithm is compared to state-of-the-art classification methods for 16S rRNA metagenomic data, including Random Forests and the phylogeny-based Metaphyl algorithm, for varying sample size, classification difficulty, and dimensionality (number of OTUs), using both synthetic and real metagenomic data sets. The results demonstrate that the proposed OBC method, with either noninformative or constructed priors, is competitive or superior to the other methods. In particular, in the case where the ratio of sample size to dimensionality is small, it was observed that the proposed method can vastly outperform the others.Author summaryRecent studies have highlighted the interplay between host genetics, gut microbes, and colorectal tumor initiation/progression. The characterization of microbial communities using metagenomic profiling has therefore received renewed interest. In this paper, we propose a method for classification, i.e., prediction of different outcomes, based on 16S rRNA metagenomic data. The proposed method employs a Bayesian approach, which is suitable for data sets with small ration of number of available instances to the dimensionality. Results using both synthetic and real metagenomic data show that the proposed method can outperform other state-of-the-art metagenomic classification algorithms.

The quality of electrical insulation of any power apparatus is an indispensable requirement for its successful and reliable operation. Partial Discharge (PD) phenomenon serves as an effective Non Destructive Testing (NDT) technique and provides an index on the quality of the insulation. The innovative trend of using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) towards the classification of PD patterns is cogent and discernible. In this paper a novel method for the classification of the PD patterns using the original Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN) as well as its variation is elucidated. A preprocessing scheme that extracts pertinent features of PD from the raw data towards achieving a compact ANN has been employed. The classification of single-type insulation defects such as voids, surface discharges and corona has been taken up. The first part of the paper gives a brief on PD, various diagnostic techniques and interpretation. The second part deals with the theoretical concepts of PNN and its adaptive version. The last part provides details on various results and comparisons of the PNN and its adaptive version in PD pattern classification.
