A better understanding of passenger perceived quality helps urban rail transit managers adopt better strategies to improve the service quality of urban rail transit, which is beneficial to the sustainable development of an urban rail transit system itself and cities. This paper designs a semantic scale to survey passenger perceived quality of urban rail transit. The methodology is selecting specific features of an attribute and then describing the features to present the attribute’s service condition and the rider’s experience. The scale’s options can reduce cognitive steps and hesitation for riders to answer the survey questionnaire. Furthermore, it enables urban rail transit managers to understand passenger perceived quality more visually. After verifying the reliability and validity of the semantic scale, an empirical study was conducted to compare the evaluation results of the proposed semantic scale, Likert, and numeric scales. Compared to the Likert and numeric scales, the evaluation result of the semantic scale is fairer for attributes with homogeneous service conditions over operation periods from the transit agency perspective. Meanwhile, it is more homogeneous for attributes with homogeneous service conditions and is more heterogeneous for attributes with heterogeneous service conditions.

With the rapid development of Chinese economy and the speeding up urbanization, urban rail transit has entered a rapid development period, which results in more and more energy consumption. Meanwhile affected by energy source and environment factors, the state has implemented energy-saving emission reduction strategies in various fields, so energy efficient management for urban rail transit becomes more important. Based on the analysis of energy consumption problems in urban rail transit, the paper designs urban rail transit energy efficiency management system from the aspects of overall architecture, service architecture and application function, and provides technical support for the realization of the software system.

With the rapid development of urban rail transit, the demand of the public in rail transportationto take real-time, reliable and efficient wireless access services, has become the focus of mobilebroadband communications. Wireless cognitive radio (CR) over urban rail transit is a newly emergingparadigm that attempts to opportunistically transmit in licensed frequencies, without affecting the preassignedusers of these bands. To enable this functionality, such a radio must predict its operationalparameters, such as transmit power and spectrum. These tasks, collectively called spectrum management,is difficult to achieve in a dynamic distributed environment, in which CR users may only takelocal decisions, and react to the environmental changes. In this paper, we propose a reinforcementlearning based approach for spectrum management. Our approach uses value functions to evaluate thedesirability of choosing different transmission parameters, and enables efficient assignment of spectrumsand transmit powers by maximizing long-term reward. We then investigate various real-worldscenarios, and compare the communication performance using different sets of learning parameters. The results proves our reinforcement learning based spectrum management can significantly reduceinterference to licensed users, while maintaining a high probability of successful transmissions in acognitive radio ad hoc network.

With rapid development and popularity of smart phone and mobile internet, mobile client software (APP) is widely used in every aspect of daily life. To improve the informatization and intellectualization of Urban Rail Transit passenger services, the paper brings forward a method of optimal travel choice for passengers based on “dynamic travel time”(hereinafter to be referred as DTT), and also takes advantage of the Android platform to develop an APP for dynamic travel information enquiry. The structure of the APP and the key problems to be resolved during the development process are introduced. As the APP is applied into practice, it can provide passengers with effective support.

Public safety presents high importance in urban sustainable development. Transportation safety is a significant section in public safety. Over the last couple of decades, as a sustainable means of public transportation, urban rail transit presents a rapid development in China. Increasing initiatives and practices have been engaged with views to facilitating people’s travel and intensive utilizing land resources. Echoing this, rail transit stations with multi-floor structure have been built and show structure complexity. Due to this complexity, there is a need to focus on risk management for the stations to guarantee operation safety. Accordingly, this research introduces an innovative approach to identify high-risk nodes in the complex rail transit stations. The high-risk nodes are determined according to two aspects, which are the key nodes of the station and presenting large passenger volumes. Complex network analysis and field investigation were adopted in this study. The Lianglukou rail transit station in Chongqing, China was selected for case study. The research results in this study indicate that (1) in platform floors, stairs/escalators are almost high-risk nodes; (2) columns and metal fences that have been determined as high-risk nodes are located near stairs/escalators; (3) in concourse floor, the determined high-risk nodes present relative high degree centrality and low betweenness centrality compared with nodes in platform floor. The obtained high-risk nodes are helpful for the management firms to develop risk mitigation measures and re-allocate their resources to create a safe environment for passengers in the stations. The guarantee for the rail transit station operation safety plays an important role in enhancing urban sustainability.

With the rapid development of urban rail transit systems, large amounts of information technologies are applied to increase efficiency of train control systems, such as general computers, communication protocols, and operation systems. With the continuous exposure of information technology vulnerabilities, security risks are increasing, and information is easy to use by malicious attackers, which can bring huge property and economic losses. The communication-based train control (CBTC) system is the most important subsystem of urban rail transit. The CBTC system ensures safe and efficient operation of trains, so the quantitative assessment of cyber security is quite necessary. In this paper, a resilience-based assessment method is proposed to analyze the security level of CBTC systems based on indicators of both the cyber domain and the physical domain. The proposed method can demonstrate the robustness and recovery ability of CBTC systems under different security attacks. Based on the structural information entropy, the fusion of different indicators is achieved. Two typical attacking scenarios are analyzed, and the simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed assessment approach.
