Background: Numerous industries have researched the effects of occupational dust and particles on respiratory function. The continuous exposure to dispersed particles causes respiratory ailments in spice mill workers. Spice dust exposure is linked to a systemic inflammatory response, including respiratory irritation. Spice dust is finely divided solid particles and a form of respirable dust this is the leading cause of occupational disease. Allergies and asthma have been linked to spice mill workers. Objective: To study the effect of spice dust exposure on expiratory function and to compare the peak expiratory flow rate of spice mill workers and normal adults across age groups and gender Method: 186 subjects in Mumbai region, 93 spice mill workers and 93 normal adults were selected as per inclusion and exclusion criteria. PEFR was measured in all the participants using a mini Wright peak flow meter. Result: The statistical analysis showed that there is a significant difference in the peak expiratory flow rates of spice mill workers. However, intergroup analysis between age groups showed that there was not much difference in the PEFR values for the age group 40-50 when compared with normal. The reason could be less number of participants available for the study. Also, the gender-wise comparison showed statistically significant difference in male and female PEFR values. Conclusion: The present study concluded that peak expiratory flow rate was significantly reduced in spice mill workers when compared to normal adults of same age. Coccidiosis is the costliest disease in the rabbit industry. The kits do not obtain maternal immunity against the diseases and therefore suckling to weaning period being the riskiest time of infection. To date, control of coccidiosis is relied on the use of chemical coccidiostat as a drug or as the substance in feed. Whilst, continuous exposure to antibiotics develops resistance and contamination in the carcass. There is no commercially provided vaccine to prevent rabbit coccidiosis cases. In this report, we processed precocious lines from the strain of Yogyakarta origin by using selection pressure to attenuate Eimeria spp. The vaccine candidate composed of 50% of each Eimeria media and Eimeria intestinalis were given orally to initiate protective immunity against rabbit coccidiosis. The vaccinated groups with 5 x 102 oocyst dosage exhibited 95% less total oocyst excretion compared to the non-vaccinated group. Our experiment showed no mortality and without any significantly detrimental response of vaccinated rabbits during the observation time (P<0.0001). Since the oocysts in the vaccinated rabbits are excreted in dropped faecal samples, it provides recirculation and provokes a group immunity within the flock. A vaccine candidate is a promising tool as a more environmentally friendly strategy for sustainable rabbit production.

The chapter gives insight into the harmful use of pesticides in different professional environments. It portrays the use of pesticides as the potential risks to the health of users and third parties and a danger to the environment. The use of pesticides has increased at a phenomenal rate. Pesticides and their threat to the biological world have reached almost hysterical proportions. Their residues are found everywhere, particularly those of the so-called “hard pesticides” or organochlorine compounds, DDT. Herein, an attempt has been made to reflect pesticide exposure in different occupational settings and their harmful effects on humans. Excess use of pesticide in agriculture has placed workers in this industry at risk of lethal exposure. Personnel working in domestic pest control service is also from continuous exposure to the pesticide. Further, the chapter highlights various corrective measures to be taken by the people working in different occupational settings to combat the dangerous effects of pesticides in everyday life.

Purpose To characterize corneal biomechanical properties utilizing a dynamic ultra-high-speed Scheimpflug camera equipped with a non-contact tonometer (CorVis ST, CST) in keratoconic corneas following continuous high intensity, high irradiance corneal cross-linking. Design Prospective longitudinal single-centre study at a tertiary referral center. Methods Corneal biomechanical properties were measured in patients with progressive keratoconus undergoing high intensity (30 mW/cm2), high irradiance (5.4 J/cm2), accelerated corneal cross-linking with continuous exposure to ultraviolet-A for 4 min. CST was used to assess corneal biomechanical properties pre-operatively and at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months post-operatively. CST output videos were further analyzed using several previously reported algorithms. Results A total of 25 eyes of 25 participants were examined. The mean age of participants was 20.9 ± 5.3 years; 56% were male and 80% were of Māori or Pacific Island origin. Energy absorbed area (mN mm), was the only significantly changed parameter compared to baseline at all time points measuring 3.61 ± 1.19 preoperatively, 2.81 ± 1.15 at 1 month ( p = 0.037), 2.79 ± 0.81 ( p = 0.033) at 3 months, 2.76 ± 0.95 ( p = 0.028) at 6 months and 2.71 ± 1.18 ( p = 0.016) at 12 months. Conclusions The significant difference between the pre and post-operative energy absorbed area appears to reflect changes in corneal viscous properties that occur following corneal cross-linking.

BACKGROUND Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Czech population experienced a second lockdown lasting for about half a year, restricting free movement, and imposing social isolation. It is not known whether the impact of the long lockdown resulted in habituation to the adverse situation or in the traumatization of the Czech population, and whether the media and its specific use contributed to these processes. OBJECTIVE This study aimed at elucidating the effect of the long lockdown on the mental health of the Czech population, and the role of exposure to COVID-19 news reports and specific forms of media news use in mental health. METHODS We conducted two consecutive surveys in the early (November 2020) and late (March/April 2021) phases of the nationwide lockdown on the same nationally representative group of Czech adults (N = 1,777) participating in a longitudinal panel study. RESULTS Our findings show that the self-reported symptoms of anxiety and depression increased in the second observed period, whereby confirming the negative effect of the pandemic lockdown as it unfolded, suggesting that restrictive measures and continuous exposure to a collective stressor did not result in strengthening of resilience but rather in ongoing traumatization. The results also suggest a negative role of the media’s coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic in mental health during the early, and particularly late phase of the lockdown. Furthermore, we found several risk and protective factors of specific media news use. The media practice in news consumption connected to social media use was the strongest predictor of exacerbated mental health symptoms, particularly in the late phase of the lockdown. Also, news media use characterized by internalization of information learned from the news, as well as negative attitudes towards media news, were associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression. On the other hand, the use of infotainment, together with an in-depth and contextual style of reading news articles, were related to improvement of mental health. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that the long lockdown resulted in traumatization rather than habituation, and in more pronounced effects (both negative and positive) of media use in mental health.

Studies have shown that moisture impacts on the strength of flexible pavement surface of asphaltic concrete. Several investigations and relevant researches treated the effect of subsurface and surface water sources, on the durability of flexible pavements. This study is focused on the surface water sources, as a result of precipitation (rainfall), on the surface of flexible pavements. To conduct this experiment, the considerations made include (i) the continuous exposure of the pavement surface to annual rainfall (ii) application of pavement exposure to moisture in the field. This study considered the amount of rainfall each day, as the duration (age) of pavement exposure to moisture (being under water during rainfall). For the purpose of this experiment, the Owerri to Onitsha about 90km of dual carriage way in south east of Nigeria, was considered. This is a flexible pavement that traverses through the rain forest belt, characterized with high amount of annual rainfall values. Flexible pavement specimens from this road were obtained, cleaned and immersed in water after weighing, to keep vital records of the necessary parameters, before further tests at 7days intervals. Values of strength obtained after days in water, that approximated to the appropriate field situation of exposure to rainfall, showed a consistent loss of strength, from the crushing strength results.

Background: Digital eye strain (DES) is an emerging public health problem due to continuous exposure to electronic gadgets and digital devices for educational, occupational or entertainment purposes, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic. Children are more vulnerable to DES, as they continue to attend online classes but are unaware of early symptoms of DES and do not complain till their vision deteriorates. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence and risk factors of DES among school children during this pandemic.Methods: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 176 school children aged 12-16 years, studying in 8th, 9th and 10th standards of a randomly selected school in Kollam district of Kerala, using the validated computer vision syndrome questionnaire (CVSQ), sent online via Google form to parents/guardians for recording their children’s pattern of digital device usage and DES symptoms.Results: The prevalence of DES among school children was 29.5%. Their commonest symptom was headache (n=125, 69.9%). The smartphone was the most commonly used digital device (n=159, 93.5%). The independent risk factors of DES were the preferred use of smart phone (adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=2.846; 95% CI=1.371-5.906; p=0.005) and viewing distance of digital device <18 inches (AOR=2.762; 95% CI=1.331-5.731; p=0.006).Conclusions: This study has highlighted some of the risk factors associated with DES. A concerted effort is needed to raise awareness about DES by experts in the health and education sectors, along with parents and teachers, so that digital device use among children can be optimised.

The population of the predatory mites Amblyseius deleoni had been decreasing due to continuous use of synthetic pesticides in tea plantations. Therefore, this study aimed to select pesticide-resistant individuals from a wild-type population of A. deleoni and to evaluate whether or not the resistant A. deleoni were still sensible as biological control agents.  We exposed A. deleoni to (propargite), fungicide (copper oxide) and a neem seed extracts. We found that the propargite-resistant predatory mites consumed larvae and nymphs of Tetranychus urticae more than the control (wild type) (P < 0.05).  There was no difference in the number of eggs and adults of T. urticae consumed (P > 0.05). The number of individuals of every stage of T. urticae consumed by copper-oxide resistant A. deleoni was the same (P > 0.05).  In general, there were no changes in food preference in the resistant predators to the 3 of pesticides (P > 0.05). There were slight differences on the pattern of predatory capacity among the resistant predators to the three pesticides.  Although the predators are resistant to the 3 pesticides, it took longer to consume their prey in comparison to the control.  These findings suggested that pesticide-resistant A. deleoni were able to maintain their functions as a biocontrol agent. HIGHLIGHTS The effectiveness of Amblyseius deleoni as a natural predators have decreased due to continuous uses of synthetic pesticides to control pests and diseases on tea plantations Continuous exposure to propargite, CuO and neem seed extracts induced the predatory mites deleoni to develop resistance No significant changes in feeding preference and the predatory capacity of the mite deleoni on T. urticae after becoming resistant to pesticides Exposures deleoni to pesticides may have induced heritable epigenetic changes permanently or just reversible phenotypes without changing the DNA sequence

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are essential for increasing the inlet temperature of gas turbines to improve their thermal efficiency. Continuous exposure to flames is known to affect the thermal properties of TBCs, degrading the performance of gas turbines as a consequence. In this study, we quantified the changes in the thermal conductivity of yttria-stabilized zirconia coatings with respect to various heat treatment temperatures and times. The coating exhibited an increase in thermal conductivity after heat treatment, with higher heat treatment temperatures resulting in greater thermal conductivity. The coatings were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy before and after heat treatment. Results showed that there was little change in thermal conductivity due to phase changes and grain size. We conclude that pore structures, i.e., circular and lamellar pores, affected the change in thermal conductivity. Specifically, we confirmed that the change in thermal conductivity depends on the size of the lamellar pores.
