Growth and Characterization of Pure and Thiourea Doped L-Alanine Single Crystals for Crystals for NLO Devices

Single crystals of pure and thiourea substituted L-alanine single crystals were grown successfully by the solution method with slow evaporation technique at room temperature. The effect of dopant on crystal properties has been studied. The solubility of the grown samples was found at various temperatures. Structural characterization of the grown crystals was determined by the single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD). EDAX studies indicate the presence of thiourea in the doped L-alanine crystals. The functional groups were identified by FTIR spectroscopy. The UV-Vis- NIR spectral studies were carried out to analyze the optical absorption of the grown crystals and found that the absorption is very low in the wavelength region 232-1000nm for both the samples. SEM studies explain the surface morphologies of the grown crystals. Improvement in the SHG efficiency was studied by the Kurtz and Perry method. L-asparagine L-tartrate (LAT), an organic compound has been synthesized from aqueous solution and bulk single crystal has been grown by slow evaporation technique. Powder X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the monoclinic structure of the grown LAT crystal. The presence of functional groups of the grown crystal was identified by FTIR studies. Linear optical property of the grown crystal was studied by UV-Vis spectral analysis. Microhardness studies reveal that the crystal possesses relatively higher hardness compared to other organic nonlinear optical crystals. Dielectric response of the L-asparagine L-tartrate crystal was analyzed for different frequencies at various temperatures. Kurtz-Perry powder second harmonic generation test confirmed the nonlinear optical properties of the as-grown LAT crystal.

L-Valine zinc acetate (LVZA) was synthesized and its solubility was estimated in the solvent of double distilled water. Single crystals of LVZA were grown by slow evaporation solution growth technique. The cell parameters were obtained by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. Functional groups of LVZA were identified by FTIR analysis. UV-vis-NIR spectral studies showed the optical nature of LVZA. Kurtz powder technique revealed the SHG efficiency of LVZA. Thermal properties of the grown LVZA crystal were studied from TGA/ DTA and DSC spectrum. Vickers’s mechanical hardness values were found for the grown crystal.

Single crystals of Sulphamic Acid doped with Zinc Sulphate and Manganese Sulphate were grown at room temperature using slow evaporation technique. Structural analysis of the grown crystals was done using single crystal X Ray Diffraction and powder X Ray Diffraction studies. Various functional groups seen in the grown crystals are determined using FTIR spectroscopic analysis. The cut-off wavelength of ZnSO4 and MnSO4 doped Sulphamic acid were evaluated by UV-Vis-NIR spectral studies. Thermal behaviour of the grown crystals was identified from Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Thermogravimetric Analysis (DTA). The mechanical strength and Second harmonic generation of the grown crystals was identified by Vicker’s Microhardness Test and Kurtz powder technique respectively.

Single crystals of para Nitroaniline ( pNA ), an organic nonlinear optical (NLO) material, have been grown by slow solvent evaporation technique at room temperature. Good optical quality single crystals with dimensions of up to 10 × 11 × 3 mm 3 have been grown by adopting the above technique, and good quality single crystals were obtained. The grown single crystals were subjected to different characterization analyses. The lattice dimensions have been determined from the powder X-ray diffraction analysis. Its functional groups and optical behavior have been identified from the FTIR and UV-Vis. analyses respectively. The thermal stability of the crystal has been analyzed by thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermal (DT) analyses respectively.

A new organic charge transfer molecular complex salt of benzimidazolium salicylate (BSL) single crystals was grown by the slow evaporation solution growth technique using methanol as a solvent at room temperature. The grown crystals were characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) which confirms that the crystal belongs to monoclinic system with the centrosymmetric space group P21/c. The crystalline perfection of the grown crystal was analyzed by high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD). The presence of various functional groups was identified by FTIR spectrum. UV-Vis spectral study reveals that the BSL crystal is optically transparent in the wavelength region 342 nm–1100 nm. Dielectric measurements of the crystal at various frequencies were also determined. The mechanical properties of the grown crystal were assessed using Vickers microhardness testing. Nonlinear optical property of the crystal was confirmed using Kurtz and Perry powder technique and the SHG efficiency of the BSL crystal is 0.7 times greater than that of the standard KDP crystal.

ABSTRACTSingle crystals of Anthranilic acid (AA) have been successfully grown and purity of materials has been increased by repeated recrystallization process. Single crystals have been grown by slow evaporation technique. The grown crystal was characterized by Single crystal X-Ray diffraction, Powder XRD, FTIR, UV-Vis, DTA/TGA, Dielectric studies and SHG respectively. The observed results from various characterization show the suitability of NLO application. The second harmonic generation of the grown crystal was checked using Kurtz and Perry technique. Thermal stability and melting point of the grown crystal were found by thermal analysis. The Physical strength of the grown AA crystal was measured from Vicker’s hardness test.

Single crystals of KHCO 3 were grown by the slow evaporation technique of an aqueous solution. Characterization of the sample was done using different techniques such as X-ray diffraction, infrared spectra (IR) and the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) technique. The analysis of the X-ray diffraction pattern indicated that the sample was a single crystal. The results obtained by IR and DSC indicated the presence of phase transition. From the analysis of DSC, the activation energy of transition was carried out by two methods (Kissinger and Ozawa).

An organic marine dye compound (7-bromo-6-chloro-3-[3-[(2R, 3S)-3-hydroxy-2-piperidyl]-2-oxopropyl]-4(3H)-quinazolinone) was synthesized. The characteristics of this dye is soluble in water. The organic compound was made into a crystal by slow evaporation technique. The grown crystals were characterized by single crystal x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, FTIR studies and UV-visible transmittance studies and the NLO activity of the grown crystal has been checked by second harmonic generation (SHG) test.

AbstractIt is important to grow and characterize new bimetallic thiocyanate single crystals as they are expected to exhibit useful optical and electrical properties. In the present study, calcium cadmium thiocyanate CaCd(SCN)4 single crystals were grown by slow evaporation of solvent and were characterized chemically, structurally, thermally, optically and electrically. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the grown crystal belongs to the tetragonal crystal system with lattice parameters: a = b = 12.2491(7) Å and c = 15.1012(5) Å. EDAX spectral analysis confirms the expected chemical composition. Thermogravimetric (TG/DTA) measurement implies good thermal stability. Optical (UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectral and SHG efficiency) measurements suggest good optical absorption in the UV and blue regions and the SHG efficiency of 6.13 (in urea unit). The dielectric measurements carried out in the temperature range of 40 °C to 150 °C at five different frequencies, viz. 100 Hz, 1 kHz, 10 kHz, 100 kHz and 1 MHz indicate a normal dielectric behavior.

AbstractAn inorganic coordination complex of single crystal containing sodium and aluminum (SA) was grown at room temperature by slow evaporation technique. The crystal was characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-IR, UV-Vis, SHG, SEM, EDX and TG/DTA analyses. The size of the grown crystal was around 17 mm × 15 mm × 5 mm. Both optical and SEM photographs confirmed that the crystal is transparent with smooth surface. The XRD data showed that the crystal belongs to the BCC crystal structure. The crystal shows excellent transparency in the entire region of visible light (cut-off value is 339 cm−1). The dielectric constant as well as dielectric loss of the sample was calculated by varying frequencies at different temperatures and the presence of low dielectric loss proved that this crystal can be used for the NLO application.
