Damage detection in composite materials can be divided into active and passive approaches. The active approach is usually based on various non-destructive techniques utilizing actuators and/or receivers. Simple laser scans, revealing the change in Lamb wave response amplitudes, have been used to locate delamination and estimate its severity in a composite plate. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through experimental studies in which input signals exerted at piezoelectric (PZT) patches on a composite plate are successfully reconstructed by using the time reversal method. The ultimate goal of this study is to develop a reference-free damage diagnosis technique based on the time reversal process so that defects can be identified without relying on any past baseline data.

The first part of the paper is devoted to presentation and discussion of the capabilities, advantages and limitations of infrared non-destructive techniques (IR NDT). Then, the results of experimental analysis performed by testing several specimens made of woven glass epoxy resin and containing artificial delamination in the form of square PTFE foil are presented.

The article discusses the issues of implementing the conversion of input signals of «smart» sensors for automation of the heating system, an algorithm for calculating the parameters of measuring circuits with a nonlinear element and an operational amplifier is developed. The issues of modeling cascade control of residential building heating systems are investigated. The results of the analysis and selection of parameters of the cascade control system are presented. An algorithm implementing the operation of a virtual object is given. The structures of management of residential building objects are proposed. The method of calculating the adjustment of the controller for cascade control is given. For the heating system stand, the procedure for setting the parameters of the process of PID control of the coolant temperature is considered. The results confirming the achievability of the proposed structural changes are obtained. The results of experimental studies are presented.

In the recent years natural fiber reinforced composites are increasingly receiving attention from the researchers and engineers due to their mechanical properties comparable to the conventional synthetic fibers and due to their ease of preparation, low cost and density, eco-friendliness and bio-degradability. Natural fibers such as kenaf or flux are being considered as a viable replacement for glass, aramid or carbon. Extensive experimental studies have been carried out to determine the mechanical behavior of different natural fiber types such as the elastic modulus, tensile strength, flexural strength and the Poisson’s ratio. This paper presents a review of the various experimental studies in the field of fiber reinforced composites while summarizing the research outcome about the elastic properties of the major types of natural fiber reinforced composites. Furthermore, the performance of a kenaf reinforced composite plate is demonstrated using finite element analysis and results are compared to a glass fiber reinforced laminated composite plate.

CANDU reactors use Zr-2.5 Nb alloy pressure tubes, as the primary pressure boundary within the reactor core. These components are subject to periodic inspection and material surveillance programs. Occasionally, the inspection program uncovers a flaw, whereupon the flaw is assessed as to whether it compromises the integrity of the pressure-retaining component. In 1998, such a flaw was observed in one pressure tube of a reactor. Non-destructive techniques and analysis were used to form a basis to disposition the flaw, and the component was fit for a limited service life. This component was eventually removed from service, whereupon the destructive examinations were used to validate the disposition assumptions used. Such a process of validation provides credibility to the disposition process. This paper reviews the original flaw and its subsequent destructive evaluation.
