Introduction: Full-recycled-aggregate concrete (aRAC) is a new concrete reusing 100% fine and coarse recycled aggregates produced from waste concrete of demolished concrete structures. As there is a lack of studies on the bond behavior between steel bar and aRAC, findings of this study are of significance for the structural application of aRAC. Method: This paper presents the pull-out test results of 24 groups aRAC specimens with deformed steel bar, and discusses the effects of aRAC strength, bond length and lateral constructional stirrups on the bond behavior between deformed steel bar and aRAC. Results and Conclusion: The bond stress and slip at key points of bond-slip curve are analyzed in relation to the tensile strength of aRAC and the bond length of steel bar. The bond-slip relationship between deformed steel bar and aRAC is proposed based on the test and analysis of this study.

In order to research the interface bond-slip behaviors of recycled aggregate concrete-filled square steel tube (RACFSST), ten specimens using waste concrete were designed for launch test. The three changing parameters were concrete strength grade, embedded length and recycled coarse aggregate replacement rate. The load–slip curves of square steel tubes and recycled aggregate concrete were obtained, and starting bond strength and ultimate bond strength influenced by each changing parameter were analyzed. The results show that the replacement rate had a slight influence on the starting bond strength and ultimate bond strength, while the embedded length had the opposite effect. The shorter embedded length specimens had larger bond strength. The concrete strength had a relatively large influence on them.

Recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), i.e., concrete produced with recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) has been heavily investigated recently, and the structural design of RAC is entering into design codes. Nonetheless, the service load deflection behavior of RAC remains a challenge due to its larger shrinkage and creep, and lower modulus of elasticity. A novel solution to this challenge is the use of layered concrete, i.e., casting of horizontal layers of different concretes. To investigate the potential benefits and limits of layered concrete, this study contains a numerical parametric assessment of the time-dependent sustained service load deflections and environmental impacts of homogeneous and layered NAC and RAC one-way slabs. Four types of reinforced concrete slabs were considered: homogeneous slabs with 0%, 50% and 100% of coarse RCA (NAC, RAC50 and RAC100, respectively) and layered L-RAC100 slabs with the bottom and top halves consisting of RAC100 and NAC, respectively. In the deflection study, different statical systems, concrete strength classes and relative humidity conditions were investigated. The results showed that the layered L-RAC100 slabs performed as well as, or even better than, the NAC slabs due to the differential shrinkage between the layers. In terms of environmental performance, evaluated using a “cradle-to-gate” Life Cycle Assessment approach, the L-RAC100 slabs also performed as well as, or slightly better than, the NAC slabs. Therefore, layered NAC and RAC slabs can be a potentially advantageous solution from both structural and environmental perspectives.

The factors on mechanical anchoring performance of HRB500 steel bars, such as concrete strength, concrete cover thickness, diameter of steel bar, anchorage length of steel bar and transverse reinforcement ratio, were studied based on pull-out tests of 45 specimens. And the formula of mechanical anchoring bond strength for HRB500 steel bars was concluded by statistical regression analysis method. Through the reliability analysis, the mechanical anchoring length of design value and the table of conversion ratio between mechanical and direct anchoring length of HRB500 steel bars have been proposed. So it could be used as a basis for practical projects. The results indicate that the mechanical anchorage length of HRB500 steel bars can be still designed with the formula proposed in GB 50010-2002 “Code for design of concrete structures”.

In this paper, the bond deterioration mechanism of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) with a full replacement ratio was studied through experimental and numerical simulations. To study the bond behavior and the bond slip between section steel and RAC, nine push-out specimens were designed using the control variable method. The effects of the concrete strength, the embedded length, the cover thickness, and the lateral stirrup ratio on the bond behavior and the bond slip were investigated in detail. The loading process and failure mode of the specimens were observed, and the test curves of the loading end and free end of the specimens were analyzed. Based on the experiment, the finite element method (FEM) was used to simulate the specimens, and the simulation results were analyzed by comparing the experiment data. The analysis of the results showed that the developed model is capable of representing the characteristic bond strength value between section steel and RAC with sufficient accuracy, and the main differences of bond slip between the simulation and the test results are the slippage at the limit state and the moment at which the free end starts to slip.

In recent years, research on recycled aggregate concrete has become a hot issue in the field of civil engineering. This paper mainly studies the size effects on compressive and tensile strengths of the recycled aggregate concrete. Firstly, four sets of recycled concrete cube specimens with different sizes are produced in the laboratory. Secondly, the experiments on compressive and tensile strengths are carried out to obtain the rules of the strength value with the change of the specimen size. Thirdly, a standard neutrosophic number is proposed and used in modelling the size effect law more reasonably. According to the experimental results, it was found that the compressive and tensile strengths of recycled concrete both have obvious size effects. In general, the strength value decreases gradually with the increase of specimen size. Using the standard neutrosophic number, the proposed new formula on size effect law is more suitable for tackling the indeterminacy in the experimental data. It has been shown that the size effect law based on the standard neutrosophic number is more realistic than the existing size effect law. The results may be useful for the engineering application of the recycled concrete and can be extended to other types of size effect laws in the future.

This study presents an experimental program conducted to investigate the bond strength of FRP bars in recycled-aggregate concrete compared to the one in normal-aggregate concrete for the improved evaluation of results. The experimental program contains thirty six specimens tested using direct pull-out test. In this study, glass, carbon and basalt FRP bars are used with 12 mm diameter and bar bond lengths of 5d, where d is the bar diameter. The FRP bars are casted in different recycled-aggregate concrete strengths of 30, 45 and 60 MPa. The behaviour of bars in normal-aggregate concrete strength of 30 MPa is used as a benchmark and its behaviour is compared with the ones in the recycled-aggregate concrete. The impact of the concrete strength considered is identified based on the gain in the bond behaviour. The experimental results demonstrate the prospect of the recycled aggregates applied as an alternative to normal aggregates in the FRP reinforced concrete. In addition, the use of the recycled aggregate increases the bearing friction behaviour between the FRP bars and concrete.

To explore the basic mechanical properties and size effects of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) with different substitution ratios of coarse recycled concrete aggregates (CRCAs) to replace natural coarse aggregates (NCA), the failure modes and mechanical parameters of RAC under different loading conditions including compression, splitting tensile resistance and direct shear were compared and analyzed. The conclusions drawn are as follows: the failure mechanisms of concrete with different substitution ratios of CRCAs are similar; with the increase in substitution ratio, the peak compressive stress and peak tensile stress of RAC decrease gradually, the splitting limit displacement decreases, and the splitting tensile modulus slightly increases; with the increase in the concrete cube’s side length, the peak compressive stress of RAC declines gradually, but the integrity after compression is gradually improved; and the increase in the substitution ratio of the recycled aggregate reduces the impact of the size effect on the peak compressive stress of RAC. Furthermore, an influence equation of the coupling effect of the substitution ratio and size effect on the peak compressive stress of RAC was quantitatively established. The research results are of great significance for the engineering application of RAC and the strength selection of RAC structure design.

By the experimental studying on the basic mechanical properties of recycled concrete hollow block masonry, the compressive and shear behavior of recycled aggregate concrete hollow block masonry under different mortar strength were analyzed. Research indicated that the compressive and shear behavior of recycled aggregate concrete hollow block masonry was similar to that of ordinary concrete hollow block masonry. The normal formula was recommended to calculate the compressive strength of the masonry. The shear strength of the masonry was affected by the mortar strength. The shear strength calculation formula of recycled concrete hollow block masonry was proposed according to the formula of masonry design code. The calculating results were in good agreement with the test results.
