Reuse of existing design knowledge is the key to realize rapid product design. Analysis of present knowledge capture, representation and reuse method as well as study of static and dynamic knowledge capture method, the design template as a carrier for knowledge expression and reuse method is proposed. A typical instance for small agricultural machinery product is given to demonstrate the feasibility of the design approach.

The axiomatic design theory is applied with the product design knowledge expression of abrasive machine tools, making it possible to convert the implicit knowledge created in the study process into the explicit knowledge that will be shared all over the organization. The design knowledge created in the design and developing processes is divided into functional requirements, design parameters, design constraints and design coupling. In this paper, not only has the function-structure knowledge information mapping been analyzed, but also the implementation steps of product knowledge expression have been provided. Moreover, the matter-element model of the product design heterogeneous knowledge of the abrasive machine tool is established and the heterogeneous knowledge semantic rule is described. Finally, through a case of product design knowledge expression which is applied to the MLL60 abrasive flow machining tool, the correctness and practicality of this method are verified.

Given the customer requirements for personalized product increased, the contradiction between actual products and customer satisfaction was existed. Analyzing the present situation of design templates, the product configuration approach based on design templates was proposed. The importance of template objects was sorted in descending to enhance the customer satisfaction for configuring product. A typical application of a small agricultural machinery product design was given to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the design approach.

To solve the problem of the fuzzy and dynamics of requirement caused by users’ cognitive bias, a dynamic requirement and priority capture method based on user scenarios is proposed, aiming at effectively improving user experience. The method consists of the following steps: Firstly, users with similar characteristics are filtered to form a user cluster, then obtain the user’s product experience in different usage scenarios and acquire preliminary requirements by using service design methods. Secondly, the requirement path model tree will be designed and the requirement path matrix will be constructed through the evaluation of the user cluster. Then the pathfinder algorithm will be used to calculate the required correlation of user clusters and prioritize the requirements. Finally, the direction of the product design will be provided. Taking the design of the intelligent office chair as an example, the effectiveness of the method is verified by evaluating the satisfaction of user experience.

This paper describes efforts taken to further transition life cycle analysis techniques from the latter, more detailed phases of design, to the early-on conceptual phase of product development. By using modern design methodologies such as automated concept generation and an archive of product design knowledge, known as the Design Repository, virtual concepts are created and specified. Streamlined life cycle analysis techniques are then used to determine the environmental impacts of the virtual concepts. As a means to benchmark the virtual results, analogous real-life products that have functional and component similarities are identified. The identified products are then scrutinized to determine their material composition and manufacturing attributes in order to perform an additional round of life cycle analysis for the actual products. The results of this research show that enough information exists within the conceptual phase of design (utilizing the Design Repository) to reasonably predict the relative environmental impacts of actual products based on virtual concepts.

How to design highly reputable and hot-selling products is an essential issue in product design. Whether consumers choose a product depends largely on their perception of the product image. A consumer-oriented design approach presented in this paper helps product designers incorporate consumers’ perceptions of product forms in the design process. The consumer-oriented design approach uses quantification theory type I, grey prediction (the linear modeling technique), and neural networks (the nonlinear modeling technique) to determine the optimal form combination of product design for matching a given product image. An experimental study based on the concept of Kansei Engineering is conducted to collect numerical data for examining the relationship between consumers’ perception of product image and product form elements of personal digital assistants (PDAs). The result of performance comparison shows that the QTTI model is good enough to help product designers determine the optimal form combination of product design. Although the PDA form design is used as a case study, the approach is applicable to other consumer products with various design elements and product images. The approach provides an effective mechanism for facilitating the consumer-oriented product design process.
