Compound crumb rubber modified asphalt (CCRMA) is a kind of compound modified asphalt. It is made from putting granulated crumb rubber (GCR) crashed from scrap tires and SBS modifier into matrix asphalt, though shearing by high speed shearing machine and growthing. It has good low temperature crack-resistant attributes, and better preventing high temperature distortion as well. The application of abandoned rubber tire is significant to cutting down on pollution, developing circular economy and protecting the environment. The microstructure of matrix asphalt and CCRMA is observed by SEM. Based on the results of temperature sweep test for CCRMA and uniaxial compression creep test for CCRMA mixture, the high-temperature characteristic of compound modified asphalt and mixture is studied. It is observed that, CCRMA has preferable anti-permanent deformation performance. CCRMA mixture has perferable anti-high temperature deformation performation. In the meantime, the viscous-elastic parameters of CCRMA mixture is obtained by fitting experimental data, it provides a referance for viscoelastic mechanics analyze of bituminous pavement.

In this paper, recycled PE was added directly to the asphalt mixture to prepare high modulus asphalt mixture. To study the influence of the dosage and molecular weight of recycled PE on the performance of asphalt mixture, three kinds of recycled PE with different molecular weight and three asphalt binders (Conventional, SBS Modified and PE Modified) were used to prepare eight kinds of asphalt mixture. Various tests, including dynamic modulus, wheel tracking and Lottman test, were conducted to evaluate the performance of them. The results showed that 1) the dynamic modulus of asphalt mixture modified by recycled PE is higher than the normal mixture and mixture prepared with SBS modified asphalt binder; 2) adding recycled PE directly into the asphalt mixture during mixing is more effective than preparing asphalt mixture with PE modified asphalt binder in making high modulus asphalt mixture; 3) the recycled PE used to produce high modulus asphalt mixture should have certain big molecular weight, more than 27,000, and the dosage of recycled PE should be no less than 0.4% of the total weight of asphalt mixture. The performance tests indicted the good high temperature deformation resistance property of asphalt mixture modified by recycled PE.

Since 1960 Using crumb rubber modifier (CRM) in hot asphalt mixtures has become a frequent practice in road construction. Using the CRM by the dry process method is not commonly used, although it has great advantages such as it is less fuel consuming and it does not require storage container like the wet process method. This research evaluates the mechanical properties of dense graded asphalt rubber mixtures manufactured using the dry process. The results obtained from this mixture compared with similar asphalt mixture without CRM. The mechanical properties of all mixtures evaluated using a set of tests such Marshall Stability and flow test, moisture susceptibility test, indirect tensile strength test, dynamic modulus and flow number test. The research results showed that using CRM with 0.75% of aggregate’s weight increased the mixture’s stability, flow and enhanced its cracking and permanent deformation resistance.

Stability is a measure of the strength of an asphalt mixture in resisting deformation due to loading. If a road construction structure cannot withstand the existing load, it will result in road damage that endangers road users. This study aims to improve the stability of the asphalt concrete mixture with the use of crumb rubber. Crumb rubber is used because it has good resistance and elasticity. The research was conducted experimentally by making test objects in the laboratory. In this study, five variations crumb rubber (2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10% of the weight asphalt mixture) were carried out with the size of the powder retained on a 40 sieve. Marshall test and analysis of volumetric was carried out to determine the characteristics of the asphalt-concrete mixture. The results showed that the highest Marshall stability was obtained at 10% crumb rubber with a stability value of 1422 kg. The use of rubber powder can significantly increase the strength and quality of the asphalt-concrete mixture. Thus, crumb rubber can be used, and this percentage can be used as a reference in the manufacture of asphalt-concrete mixtures in order to obtain good road pavement quality.

The use of cup lump rubber as an additive in asphalt binder has recently become the main interest of the paving industry. The innovation helps to increase the natural rubber consumption and stabilize the rubber price. This study evaluates the mechanical performance of cup lump rubber modified asphalt (CMA) mixture in terms of resilient modulus, dynamic creep and indirect tensile strength under aging conditions. The CMA mixture was prepared using dense-graded Marshall-designed mix and the observed behavior was compared with that of conventional mixture. From the results, both mixtures passed the volumetric properties as accordance to Malaysian Public Work Department (PWD) specification. The addition of cup lump rubber provides better resistance against permanent deformation through the enhanced properties of resilient modulus and dynamic creep. Furthermore, the resilient modulus of CMA mixture performed better under aging conditions.

AbstractIncorporating crumb rubber (CR) using the dry process, directly in the asphalt mixture rather than into the bituminous binder requires no plant retrofitting, and therefore is the most practical industrial method for CR incorporation into asphalt mixtures. Nevertheless, very few large scale studies have been conducted. This work uses a holistic approach and reports on the functional and environmental performance of asphalt mixtures with different concentrations of CR fabricated employing the dry process in asphalt plants. Gaseous emissions were monitored during the production and laboratory leaching tests simulating the release of pollutants during rain, was conducted to evaluate the toxicology of both the CR material alone and the modified asphalt mixtures. In addition, laboratory compacted samples were tested to assess their fatigue behavior. Furthermore, noise relevant surface properties of large roller compacted slabs were evaluated before and after being subjected to a load simulator (MMLS3) to evaluate their resistance to permanent deformation. The results confirm that comparable performance can be achieved with the incorporation of CR using the dry process for high performance surfaces such as semi-dense asphalt, which usually require the use of polymer modified binders. Environmental performance improvement can be achieved by a washing step of the CR material that could remove polar CR additives which have commonly been used as vulcanization accelerator during rubber production.

The Cu-1.7Ni-1.4Co-0.65Si (wt%) alloy is hot compressed by a Gleeble-1500D machine under a temperature range of 760 to 970 °C and a strain rate range of 0.01 to 10 s−1. The flow stress increases with the extension of strain rate and decreases with the rising of deformation temperature. The dynamic recrystallization behavior happens during the hot compression deformation process. The hot deformation activation energy of the alloy can be calculated as 468.5 kJ/mol, and the high temperature deformation constitutive equation is confirmed. The hot processing map of the alloy is established on the basis of hot deformation behavior and hot working characteristics. With the optimal thermal deformation conditions of 940 to 970 °C and 0.01 to 10 s−1, the fine equiaxed grain and no holes are found in the matrix, which can provide significant guidance for hot deformation processing technology of Cu–Ni–Co–Si alloy.

Using the waste crumb rubber modified asphalt to pave the road surface could reduce cost and save energy. However,in order to obtain adequate workability, the mixing temperature and compaction temperature of rubberized asphalt binder and its mixture is much higher than those of conventional asphalt mixtures. Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) is the name given to certain technologies that reduce the production and placement temperatures of asphalt mixes. One of the main benefits advertised is the increased workability at conventional and lower compaction temperatures with the WMA addition. This paper evaluates whether there are any synergy effects of using warm mix technologies and Asphalt Rubber(AR) hot mixes. This paper summarizes a lab research to evaluate the workability of Asphalt Rubber hot mixes containing warm mix technologies. Both asphalt binder and asphalt mixture were evaluated and compared. The research suggests that combining WMA technology with Asphalt Rubber mixtures is a win-win.
