This paper presents a laboratory test to characterize the pavement performance of asphalt mixture containing polyolefin/ethylene copolymer modifier. The modifier is directly added into mixture like aggregates and is not necessary to modify the asphalt binder firstly, which is different with conventional modifier and is so-called dry process. Based on the aggregate grade of AC-13 mixture, the mechanical properties of polyolefin/ethylene copolymer modified hot mixtures asphalt (dry process) were studied by experimental tests, which include the high-temperature stability and water stability. The test results indicate that compared to the SBS asphalt mixture the dynamic stability and TSR improved 66% and 2.3% respectively, when the addition of RK300 is 0.3%.

The research was conducted to evaluate pavement properties of polyacrylonitrile fiber asphalt binder and asphalt mixtures, including high temperature stability of binder and mixture, low temperature crack resistance and water stability of mixture. Moreover, polyacrylonitrile fibers were compared with methyl cellulose in the asphalt binder and asphalt mixtures. The result indicates that polyacrylonitrile fibers may improve clearly the high temperature stability of asphalt binder, and pavement performance of mixtures is enhanced obviously. Also polyacrylonitrile fiber binder and mixtures have better performance than methyl cellulose.

Excessive usage of non-renewable natural resources and massive construction wastes put pressure on the environment. Steel slags, the main waste material from the metal industry, are normally added in asphalt concrete to replace traditional aggregate. In addition, as a typical microwave absorber, steel slag has the potential to transfer microwave energy into heat, thus increasing the limited self-healing ability of asphalt mixture. This paper aims to investigate the microwave absorption potentials of steel slag and the effect of its addition on road performance. The magnetic parameters obtained from a microwave vector network analyzer were used to estimate the potential use of steel slag as microwave absorber to heal cracks. Meanwhile, the initial self-healing temperature was further discussed according to the frequency sweeping results. The obvious porous structure of steel slag observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) had important impacts on the road performance of asphalt mixtures. Steel slag presented a worse effect on low-temperature crack resistance and water stability, while high-temperature stability can be remarkably enhanced when the substitution of steel slag was 60% by volume with the particle size of 4.75–9.5 mm. Overall, the sustainability of asphalt mixtures incorporating steel slag can be promoted due to its excellent mechanical and microwave absorption properties.

Fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture has been widely used in pavement engineering to not only prevent asphalt binder leakage but also improve engineering properties of asphalt mixture. However, the research on three key parameters, namely fiber type, fiber length, and fiber content, which significantly affect the performance of fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture, have seldom been conducted systematically. To determine these three key parameters in the support of the application of fibers in mixture scientifically, three commonly used fibers were selected, basalt fiber, polyester fiber, and lignin fiber, and the testing on fibers, fiber-reinforced asphalt binders, and fiber-reinforced asphalt mixtures was conducted afterwards. The results showed: the favorable fiber type was basalt fiber; the favorable basalt fiber length was 6mm; the engineering properties including high temperature stability, low temperature crack resistance, and water susceptibility were clearly improved by the added basalt fiber, and the optimum basalt fiber content was 0.4 wt.%. The obtained results may be valuable from a practical point of view to engineers and practitioners.

With the early asphalt pavements have been into the stage of medium maintenance or overhaul, recycling is a very important way for waste asphalt mixtures. A sample was taken in the expressway from Huhhot to Baotou, and the waste mixtures were extracted from field and sieved; so that the new aggregates can be determined and mix design was carried. With the aid of the penetration, the softening point and the viscosity in 135°C test, the quantity of the regenerant and the asphalt content were ascertained. Through the high temperature stable performance, the anti-low temperature performance, the water stability and the Hamburg wheel-tracking test, the appropriate gradation and the optimum asphalt content were determined. The test results showed that the pavement performance of the waste asphalt mixture was enhanced obviously with hot in-place recycling, and it has achieved technical parameters for old asphalt mixture.

Natural mineral fiber with good performances of mechanical properties and environmentally friendly, pollution-free especially have gradually aroused extensive concern. In order to improve the quality of asphalt pavement, explore the applicability of nature basalt fiber in enhanced asphalt mixture performance, this paper investigates two typical asphalt mixtures and contrastive studies pavement performance of asphalt mixture by high temperature stability, water stability, low temperature anti-cracking and fatigue performance between basalt fiber modified asphalt mixture and base asphalt mixture, and then study the basic principle of fiber reinforcing asphalt mixture. The research show that basalt fiber modified asphalt mixture has a better pavement performance than base asphalt mixture, its dynamic stability is 1.6 times than base asphalt mixture, low temperature anti-cracking performance increased by more 25% and fatigue life is more 2 times than base asphalt mixture. And the basalt fiber can be used in the road engineering as an additive material that enhances the comprehensive performance of asphalt pavement.

Because of the heating limitation of old pavement and the restriction of climate, the quality of hot in-place recycled pavement was different to control. The warm m,ix asphalt technology was introduced to improve the heterogeneity and compactness of the hot in-place recycled pavement and decrease its construction temperature. The compaction characteristics of warm in-place recycled asphalt mixture were analyzed and its molding temperature was determined through the Marshall test. The pavement performance of warm in-place recycled asphalt mixture was analyzed whose results indicated that the introduction of warm mix asphalt technology was able to improve the compactness, the high temperature stability and water stability of hot in-place recycled asphalt mixture and reduce the influence of environment over its construction quality. A warm in-place recycled engineering of Shian expressway was introduced to verify the feasibility of warm in-place recycling technology which demonstrated that the warm in-place recycling technology was able to improve the heterogeneity and compaction quality of the recycled pavement and weaken the environmental pollution.

In recent years, the significant demand for sustainable paving materials has led to a rapid increase in the utilization of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) materials. When RAP is mixed with virgin asphalt concrete, particularly when its percentage is high, performance of the binder and asphalt concrete can be adversely affected. For this reason, different types of additives need to be identified and evaluated beforehand to mitigate the adverse effects. In this study, different types of fiber materials were identified and selected as binder/mixture additives, including lignin fiber (LF), polyester fiber (PF), and basalt fiber (BF). Various samples of fiber-modified binders and asphalt mixtures with different RAP contents (0%, 20%, and 40%) were prepared and were evaluated using two sets of laboratory testing: (i) dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR) tests were performed to study the rheological properties of fiber-modified binders; (ii) the wheel tracking test, bending creep test, moisture susceptibility test, fatigue test, and self-healing fatigue test were conducted to characterize the laboratory properties of fiber-modified RAP mixtures. Test results for the modified binders show that the BF-modified binder has the greatest positive effect on the high-temperature performance of the asphalt binder, followed by PF- and LF-modified binders. However, the virgin asphalt shows the best low-temperature property than the fiber-modified asphalt binder. Test results for the whole RAP mixtures show that all fibers have a significant effect on the properties (including high- and low-temperature stability, moisture susceptibility, fatigue, and self-healing ability) of RAP mixtures. Among them, adding BF shows the greatest improvement in high-temperature stability, fatigue resistance, and self-healing ability of RAP mixtures. LF is found to significantly enhance low-temperature properties, and PF can greatly improve the resistance to moisture damage of RAP mixtures. For high percentage of RAP using on sites, adding multiple additives may further enhance its durability.
