The effect of different microbial consortia on the leaching of chalcopyrite was studied at different temperatures and solution compositions with Boliden’s Aitik ore in column reactors simulating heap bioleaching. The columns were equipped with sampling chambers and chalcopyrite mineral electrodes in order to investigate the passivation of chalcopyrite. The sampling chambers were filled with agglomerated ore and pieces of chalcopyrite-rich ore. In addition to chemical analysis of the leaching solution and solids the progress of leaching of chalcopyrite was studied by continuous potential measurements with chalcopyrite electrodes. The occurrence and composition of potentially passivating layers on the surfaces of the electrodes and the samples taken from sample chambers were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy.

AbstractTrachyandesite rocks, occurring over an area of about 1 km2in the southwest part of Limnos Island, Greece, are altered mainly to halloysite. The samples were collected and analysed by polarizing microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and chemical analysis. The alteration of plagioclase to halloysite follows seven discrete stages that are described in detail. The geochemical evaluation of the data shows enrichment of the lightREE(LREE) over heavyREE(HREE) as expressed by the (La/Yb)n ratio. TheΣLREErange from 206.44 to 272.30, while the sum ofHREEvaries from 11.01 to 26.26. The (La/Yb)n ratio ranges from 9.72 to 27.64. Fractionation amongLREEexpressed as (La/Sm)n and between middleREE(MREE) andHREEis shown as (Tb/Yb)n ratios. The most altered rocks close to the fault zone have high (Tb/Yb)n ratios and low (La/Sm)n and Eu/Eu* ratios. Although mineralogy and clay mineral textures indicate hydrothermal genesis of halloysite, the geochemical data are not conclusive due to a secondary weathering effect.

We describe morphological features not previously reported for this old acanthocephalan Nephridiacanthus major (Bremser, 1811 in Westrumb, 1821) Golvan, 1962 first described over 200 years ago. Our specimens were collected from long-eared hedgehog Hemiechinus auritus (Gmelin, 1770) (Erinaceidae) in Iran. We compare the morphometrics of our material with others previously reported from the same host in Iran, Russia, central Asia and Europe. Our specimens had markedly smaller proboscides, proboscis hooks and lemnisci than those reported from Russia and central Asia, but comparable measurements of other structures with specimens previously described from other collections. We document our new observations with scanning electron microscopy features not previously demonstrable by other observers and provide a chemical analysis of proboscis hooks using energy-dispersive X-ray analysis for the first time. The molecular profile of this acanthocephalan, based on 18S rDNA and cox1 genes, was generated for the first time. The phylogenetic analysis showed that N. major is placed in a clade of the family Oligacanthorhynchidae, well separated from the families Moniliformidae and Gigantorhynchidae.

Abstract This study reports the mineralogical characterization of kaolin occurrences in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to identify new kaolinite and halloysite deposits. Samples were collected in 10 pegmatites with varying sizes for X-ray diffractometry, chemical analysis by X-ray fluorescence, and scanning electron microscopy studies. The results indicated that the kaolin occurrences were of weathered origin, wherein some places there were occurrences of tubular halloysite. Concerning the regolith stratigraphy, samples located in the saprock zone were found to contain kaolinite and/or halloysite contents from 0 to 10.1%, while those located in the saprolite zone contained kaolinite and/or halloysite contents from 16.3% to 34.9%. Kaolinite and/or halloysite-7Å were formed from plagioclase weathering instead of K-feldspar or mica, and the halloysite-7Å occurrence was related to samples in regions with a higher degree of weathering.

Abstract Interior plaster from the Abbot's Palace of the Abbey of Villers-la-Ville, Brabant Wallon province, Belgium has been investigated. It is done by using chemical analysis, x-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive electron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. It is found that the rendering was made with lime rich mortar and animal hairs. The sand used was very fine and the hairs were very short. The solid constituents and the hairs were uniformly dispersed, which could have been obtained by the addition of some other natural polymer, containing protein.

An innovative chemical quantitative mineral analysis (CQMA) was successfully tested on a cordierite-based clay ceramic sample to quantify crystalline and amorphous components. The accuracy of this method was demonstrated on an added module to the CQMA program that used oxide formulas of amorphous phases obtained by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) microprobe chemical analysis. This CQMA method was tested for three variants calculated using chemical analysis, i.e., X-ray diffraction (XRD) identification of crystalline (cordierite and enstatite) and amorphous phases by scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/EDS texture and microanalyses. The test results from CQMA suggest their application possibilities as well as the limits of their utilization.

Three different thermo-sensitive microgels obtained by the copolymerisation of vinylcaprolactam) (VCL) and various monomers (vinylimidazole(VIm), acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM) and itaconic acid(IA)) are used to coat different fibre surfaces. Two different pHs and two different temperatures, 25°C and 50°C respectively are chosen for the deposition of the microgels. The scanning electron microscopy of the treated fibre shows good distribution of the particles onto the fibres especially at increasing temperatures. The gloss index for the treated fibres has been measured, and showed that it may be controlled for all of the fibres with the treatment parameters (pH and temperature) and the microgel structure.

Chromium and molybdenum exhibit continuous solubility in the solid phase region at temperatures of 908°C and above [1]. At lower temperatures, the system exhibits a miscibility gap. Furthermore a congruent minimum in the liquidus boundary exists at 1854°C. Chromium and molybdenum powders with different particle morphologies were mixed and porous green parts were produced by pressing. Sintering experiments were performed at different temperatures and for different chromium to molybdenum ratios. To investigate the evolution of the microstructure, sintering was interrupted at different temperatures and points in time. The microstructure and morphology of the sintered parts was investigated by scanning electron microscopy as well as light optical microscopy. It was found that during sintering, a Cr-Mo solid solution is formed. Depending on the molybdenum content, this induces either shrinking or swelling of the porous parts. Samples exhibited a linear expansion of up to 10% and final porosities of up to 65%.
