In this paper, three kinds of Cr-based hard coatings have been studied for its structural, mechanical and tribological properties at room temperature. By the technology of closed field unbalanced magnetron sputter ion plating (CFUMSIP), CrN CrAlN and CrTiAlN hard coatings were deposited onto DC53 cold die steel and silicon (100) substrate. The coatings were characterized by means of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), microhardness tester, optical microscope and ball-on-disc tribometer, in order to check their structural, as well as to determine the mechanical and tribological properties. The experimental results showed that the CrTiAlN coating performed better than the CrN coating and the CrAlN coating in terms of mechanical and tribological properties. The wear resistances of CrN, CrAlN and CrTiAlN coatings have been significantly improved compared with DC53 steel substrate.

Graphite-like carbon films were deposited on DC53 steel substrate by unbalanced magnetron sputtering. The microstructures of the resultant films were investigated by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD), respectively. Ball-on-disc tribometer was employed to analyze the tribological properties of the film. The results show that the films were dominated by sp2 sites. The surfaces are uniform and dense, the sectional morphology of the films present dense columnar crystal. The films have superior tribological properties under different loads, including low friction coefficient (0.18-0.33) and low wear rate (2.53×10-17m3/(Nm)- 8.47×10-17m3/(Nm)).

Three types of nano-multilayer coatings, CrSiN, CrAlN and CrMoN, with different Si, Al and Mo contents were deposited on M42 substrates using a closed field unbalanced magnetron sputter ion plating (CFUMSIP) technique. Systematic characterization on the chemical composition, microstructure, hardness and wear properties of these multilayer coatings has been investigated using GDOES, low angle XRD, SEM, TEM, nanoindentation and wear tests. Experimental results revealed that all these three types of Cr, XN ternary coatings (X=Al, Si and Mo) are nano-multilayer structured. The CrAlN multilayer coatings showed the highest hardness and oxidation resistance among these three multilayer coatings. The CrMoN multilayer coatings exhibited the lowest friction coefficient although no appreciable improvements in wear resistance were observed as compared with the optimized CrN coatings.
