Composites of phenolic resin reinforced by the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were fabricated and its mechanical properties were measured. The MWCNTs were synthesized by the floating catalyst method in a thermal chemical vapor deposition chamber. Benzene, hydrogen, ferrocene, and thiophene were used as carbon source, carrier gas, catalyst, and growth promoter, respectively. The nano-composites were made by the melt mixing and the resin infiltration methods. Tensile strength, Poisson’s ratio, and modulus were measured and the morphologies on the fracture surface were examined by the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The microstructure of the synthesized MWCNTs reinforced nano-composites was examined by FESEM. The influences of MWCNTs amounts on the mechanical properties of the nano-composites were discussed.

AbstractVertically-aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (VA-MWCNTs) were grown using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique. These VA-MWCNTs were then dip coated by Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) followed by annealing. Samples were then polished to expose the tips of CNTs. Biological molecules Glucose Oxidase (GOx) were then immobilized on the exposed tips of these nanoelectrode ensembles. Here we present further characterization of these devices, with results on the detection limits and measurement stability. We found that these sensors can be reused for longer than eight months when kept in proper storage conditions.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were deposited on silicon wafer (Si) by Thermal Chemical Vapor Deposition (TCVD). The new starting material of camphor oil was used as carbon precursor. The gas flow of Argon (Ar) was constant at 100 bubbles per minute and 30 minutes of deposition time. Before the deposition process, silicon was coated with mixture of nickel (II) nitrate hexahydrate, Ni (NO3)2.6H2O and ethyl alcohol, C2H5OH using spin coater. Variable parameter which is deposition temperature has been studied. Chemical functional groups of carbon nanotubes were characterized using FTIR while surface morphology and uniformity were characterized using FESEM. The FTIR result shows peaks attributed to multi–walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) vibration modes.

Polyesteramide (PEA) have good mechanical properties, compositing with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) can further improve the mechanical properties of the polymer. In this paper, PEA/MWNTs were synthesized in-suit using the reinforcement of nanocomposite. SEM and tensile testing were used to characterize the composited polyesteramides. The results show that MWNTs can be uniformly dispersed in the composited polyesteramides, the PEA/MWNTs tensile strength and Elongation at break increased.

Abstract Mechanical properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) reinforced epoxy nanocomposites, with and without any structural defect, were investigated using different weight percent values of pristine and covalently functionalized CNT. First, nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) catalyst nanoparticles were prepared using the co-precipitate method followed by CNT growth via chemical vapor deposition, using acetylene as carbon feedstock. Through a combination of magnetic stirring and ultrasound vibration treatments in acetone, pristine, COOH-, or NH2-functionalized CNTs at 0.15, 0.60, 1.10 and 1.50 wt% were added to the Epon 828 epoxy. During each stage, extensive materials characterization was carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)/differential thermal analysis (DTA) techniques. Tensile testing of the specimens revealed an increase in the elastic modulus and tensile strength values with maximum increase registered in the case of nanocomposites made from 1.1 wt% CNT-NH2 (+73%) or CNT-COOH (67%) addition. The energy absorbed during impact testing also increased by 86% upon addition of 1.50 wt% CNT-NH2. The presence of a small notch in the nanocomposite specimens yielded superior mechanical properties to those of the neat epoxy. Such enhancement in the mechanical properties can be attributed to better CNT dispersion in the nanocomposites and good interfacial bonding, as confirmed from microstructural examination of the fractured surfaces.

In this study, the surfaces of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were treated by acrylic acid. The acid-treated MWNTs were functionalized and were characterized by Infrared spectroscopy. The MWNTs were opened at their ends by ultrasonic treating and UV irradiating. Different adding amounts of the opened MWNTs were filled to the epoxy resin, and their mechanical properties and thermal properties were measured by Instron, impact and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), etc. The optimum adding amount of MWNTs to the epoxy resin is 2.0%, which is according to the parameters obtained from mechanical testing and Tg. The activation energy of the epoxy resin during curing can be calculated from infrared spectra according to the change of the epoxide band. The electrical conductivity of the MWNTs-filled composites was increased with proper (12.87%) amount of MWNTs adding, this is due to the networks constructed between MWNTs completely.

AbstractIn this study, epoxy hybrid nanocomposites reinforced by carbon fibers (CFs) were fabricated by a filament winding. To improve out-of-plane (transverse) mechanical properties, 0.5 and 1.0 Wt.% multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were embedded into epoxy/CF composites. The MWCNTs were well dispersed into the epoxy resin without using any additives. The transverse mechanical properties of epoxy/MWCNT/CF hybrid nanocomposites were evaluated by the tensile test in the vertical direction to the CFs (90º tensile) and flexural tests. The fracture surfaces of composites were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SEM observations showed that the bridging of the MWCNTs is one of the mechanisms of transverse mechanical properties enhancement in the epoxy/MWCNT/CF composites. The results of the 90º tensile test proved that the tensile strength and elongation at break of nanocomposite with 1.0 Wt.% MWCNTs improved up to 53% and 50% in comparison with epoxy/CF laminate composite, respectively. Furthermore, the flexural strength, secant modulus, and elongation of epoxy/1.0 Wt.% MWCNT/CF hybrid nanocomposite increased 15%, 7%, and 9% compared to epoxy/CF laminate composite, respectively.
