The composition, processing technology, mechanical property and engineering performance of ceramic materials such as cermet, ZTA, TZP, TZP/Al2O3, PSZ, Si3N4 and Sialon, etc, have been predominantly summarized when they are used as die materials in various operations such as drawing, extrusion, punching and stamping etc. The problems existed in the research and application of ceramic die materials are discussed, and the perspectives in the application of ceramic die materials are pointed out. It is concluded that advanced ceramic material is one of the most promising die materials because of its high hardness, high wear resistance, superior high-temperature property and chemical stability and good engineering performance, compared with other die materials such as die steel and cemented carbides. It is proposed that nano composite and functionally gradient ceramic, surface modification technology with ceramic, optimal design of die structures and die reliability research, etc. are all the potential and effective methods in the improvement of mechanical property and engineering performance of ceramic die materials.

Advanced ceramic materials are gradually becoming very important for their superior properties such as high hardness, wear resistance, chemical resistance, and high strength to weight ratio. But machining of advanced ceramic like Al2O3-ceramics is very difficult by any well known and common machining processes. Normally, cleavages and triangular fractures generate when machining of these materials is done by traditional machining methods. It is essential to develop an efficient and accurate machining method for processing advanced ceramic materials. For effective machining of Al2O3-ceramics, a traveling wire electrochemical spark machining (TW-ECSM) setup has been developed. The developed TW-ECSM setup has been utilized to machine Al2O3 ceramic materials and subsequently test results are utilized to analyze the machining performance characteristic. Different SEM photographs show the actual condition of the micro machined surfaces. The practical research analysis and test results on the machining of Al2O3 ceramics by developed TWECSM setup will provide a new guideline to the researchers and manufacturing engineers.

Five SBS modified asphalts and one base asphalt were selected to carry out frequency sweeps over a wider frequency range using the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). Six asphalt binders were subjected to sinusoidal loading at 30°C-90°C within the linear viscoelastic limits, and master curves of complex modulus (G*) and phase angle (δ) could be constructed by means of the time-temperature superposition principle (TTSP). The results show that the G* values of SBS modified asphalts are significantly greater than those of base asphalt at low frequencies, but are slightly smaller at high frequencies. Compared with the base asphalt, SBS modified asphalts have narrower master curves of complex modulus, and their phase angles are much smaller within the whole frequency range. This indicates that various properties of SBS modified asphalts, such as high-temperature property, low-temperature property, temperature susceptibility and elastic recoverability, are superior to those of the base asphalt. The G* values of the rolling thin-film oven (RTFO) aged asphalt are larger than those of the unaged asphalt in the whole range of frequencies, demonstrating that the anti-rutting performance of asphalt binder is improved after short-term aging.

A new ZrO2 nano-composite ceramic tool and die material was prepared with vacuum hot pressing technique. The effects of sintering parameters on the nano-composite ceramic tool and die materials were studied. The results indicated that the mechanical properties of ZrO2 nano-composite ceramic tool and die material with the additions of TiB2 and Al2O3 are higher than that of the pure ZrO2 ceramic material. Sintering at 1100 for 120min could improve the density and mechanical properties of ZrO2 nano-composite ceramic material. The flexural strength, fracture toughness and hardness with the optimum sintering parameters can reach 878MPa, 9.54MPa•m1/2 and 13.48GPa, respectively, obviously higher than that with non-optimum sintering parameters.

The nano-indentation response and the friction/wear properties of DLC/SiC (diamond-like carbon/silicon carbon) double layer thin films deposited on Mg alloy (AZ91D) substrate using magnetron sputtering technique at room temperature were investigated. The results show that the DLC films displayed low nano-hardness (3.05 GPa), low Young's modulus (24.67 GPa) but high hardness-to-modulus ratio (0.124). The films-substrate system exhibited a good friction and wear properties with the mean friction coefficient of about 0.175, the special wear rate in the magnitude order of 10−6 mm3 m−1 N−1 together with little film-cracking and interface-delaminating, when sliding against Si3N4 (silicon nitride) ball using ball-on-disc wear tester under dry frictional condition. The high wear-resistance is in accordance with high ductility of the films, good modulus match in the films-substrate system, and high hardness-to-modulus ratio of the films. The underlying factors are discussed and are believed to be due to the substrate is Mg, a metal with high activity.
