Local Rapid Heat Treatment (LRHT) based on induction-heating methods can be used to form unique location-specific microstructures and properties in commercial titanium alloys while maintaining the bulk of the material in an initial, non-heat-treated condition. The present work is focused on practical aspects of LRHT application for microstructure/ mechanical properties improvement of some parts made of commercial titanium alloys. It is shown, that LRHT application could improve mechanical properties of such complicated part like turbine engine compressor blades, and two made of Ti-6Al-4V and VT22 titanium alloys goods after repair with Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposition as well as with Build-up Welding.

Titanium alloys are susceptible to sand erosion, hard zirconium nitride coatings have been deposited onto titanium alloys by Physical vapor deposition (PVD) in order to improve erosion resistance. Al and Cu were added into ZrN coatings to strength and toughing the coating. The microstructure and mechanical properties of ZrAlCuN coating were studied. Erosion tests were conducted to evaluate anti-erosion ability. Erosion rates were measured and characteristic damage features were identified on the surface of eroded specimens. The mechanisms of erosion are discussed in order to explain the promising performance of materials in erosive conditions. It was found that there is an significant increase of erosion resistance because of the increase of hardness and toughness.

Presents a literature review in the field of methods for strengthening titanium and its alloys by introducing various refractory particles into the matrix. The main problematic issues related to the chemical nature of refractory particles and titanium alloys that arise during hardening are briefly described. The main structural, physical and mechanical properties and morphology of such metal composite materials are described. The dependence of the influence of various refractory particles and their amount, as well as the effect of heat treatment on the physical and mechanical properties of microns based on titanium alloys, is presented.

Since 2018, the institute of metal forming has been studying the novel twin-roll casting (TRC) of magnesium wire at the pilot research plant set up specifically for this purpose. Light microscopic and scanning electronic investigations were carried out within this work and show the unique microstructure of twin-roll cast AZ31 magnesium alloy with grain sizes of about 10 μm ± 4 μm in centre and 39 μm ± 26 μm near the surface of the sample. By means of a short heat treatment (460 °C/15 min), segregations can be dissolved and grain size changes in centre to 19 μm ± 12 μm (increase) and near the surface to 12 μm ± 7 μm (decrease). Further, the mechanical properties of the twin-roll cast and heat-treated wire were analysed by tensile testing at room temperature. By heat treatment, the total elongation could be increased by a third whereas the strength decreases slightly. In heat-treated state, no preferred orientation is evident. In addition to the twin-roll cast and the heat-treated condition, the rolled state was analysed. For this purpose, the twin-roll cast wire was hot rolled using an oval-square calibration. After hot rolling, a dynamic recrystallization and grain refinement of the twin-roll cast wire could be achieved. It can be seen, that an increase in strength as well as in total elongation occur after wire rolling. Beside this, a rolling texture is evident.
