Erosion-Resistant PVD ZrAlCuN Coating for Titanium Alloy

Titanium alloys are susceptible to sand erosion, hard zirconium nitride coatings have been deposited onto titanium alloys by Physical vapor deposition (PVD) in order to improve erosion resistance. Al and Cu were added into ZrN coatings to strength and toughing the coating. The microstructure and mechanical properties of ZrAlCuN coating were studied. Erosion tests were conducted to evaluate anti-erosion ability. Erosion rates were measured and characteristic damage features were identified on the surface of eroded specimens. The mechanisms of erosion are discussed in order to explain the promising performance of materials in erosive conditions. It was found that there is an significant increase of erosion resistance because of the increase of hardness and toughness.

Titanium and its alloys are characterized by high mechanical strength, good corrosion resistance, high biocompatibility and relatively low Young’s modulus. For many years, one of the most commonly used and described titanium alloys has been Ti-6Al-4V. The great interest in this two-phase titanium alloy is due to the broad possibilities of shaping its mechanical and physico-chemical properties using modern surface engineering techniques. The high coefficient of friction and tendency to galling are the most important drawbacks limiting the application of this material in many areas. In this regard, such methods as carburizing, nitriding, oxidation, and the synthesis of thin films using physical vapor deposition (PVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods may significantly improve the tribological properties of titanium alloys. The influence of thermo-chemical treatment (oxidation, carburizing and nitriding) on tribological properties and corrosion resistance of Ti-6Al-4V alloy is presented in this paper. The results include metallographic studies, analysis of tribological and mechanical properties and corrosion resistance as well. They indicate significant improvements in mechanical properties manifested by a twofold increase in hardness and improved corrosion resistance for the oxidation process. The carburizing was most important for reducing the coefficient of friction and wear rate. The nitriding process had the least effect on the properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

High-quality joints between titanium alloys and stainless steels have found applications for nuclear, petrochemical, cryogenic, and aerospace industries due to their relatively low cost, lightweight, high corrosion resistance, and appreciable mechanical properties. This article reviews diffusion bonding between titanium alloys and stainless steels with or without interlayers. For diffusion bonding of a titanium alloy and a stainless steel without an interlayer, the optimized temperature is in the range of 800–950°C for a period of 60–120 min. Sound joint can be obtained, but brittle FeTi and Fe-Cr-Ti phases are formed at the interface. The development process of a joint mainly includes three steps: matching surface closure, growth of brittle intermetallic compounds, and formation of the Kirkendall voids. Growth kinetics of interfacial phases needs further clarification in terms of growth velocity of the reacting layer, moving speed of the phase interface, and the order for a new phase appears. The influence of Cu, Ni (or nickel alloy), and Ag interlayers on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the joints is systematically summarized. The content of FeTi and Fe-Cr-Ti phases at the interface can be declined significantly by the addition of an interlayer. Application of multi-interlayer well prevents the formation of intermetallic phases by forming solid solution at the interface, and parameters can be predicted by using a parabolic diffusion law. The selection of multi-interlayer was done based on two principles: no formation of brittle intermetallic phases and transitional physical properties between titanium alloy and stainless steel.

Local Rapid Heat Treatment (LRHT) based on induction-heating methods can be used to form unique location-specific microstructures and properties in commercial titanium alloys while maintaining the bulk of the material in an initial, non-heat-treated condition. The present work is focused on practical aspects of LRHT application for microstructure/ mechanical properties improvement of some parts made of commercial titanium alloys. It is shown, that LRHT application could improve mechanical properties of such complicated part like turbine engine compressor blades, and two made of Ti-6Al-4V and VT22 titanium alloys goods after repair with Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposition as well as with Build-up Welding.

Titanium alloys and Titanium alloy-based particulate composites were synthesized using the blended elemental P/M route. First, processing conditions such as the fabrication of master alloy powder were investigated. Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al-2.5Fe, Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo, IMI685, IMI829, Timetal 1100 and Timetal 62S, and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo/10%TiB and Timetal 62S/10%TiB were then synthesized using the optimal processing conditions obtained. The microstructures and mechanical properties such as tensile strength and high cycle fatigue strength were evaluated.
