Comparative Study to Determine the State of Tension Using FEM in a Premolar Restored with a Composite Inlay versus a Ceramic Inlay

The aesthetic composite inlay or ceramic ones are useful for restoring posterior teeth affected by decay processes. The choice of the inlay type can sometimes be a challenge for the dentist. The aim of this study is to identify the optimal type of an inlay used for second-class cavities that can assure a good long-term prognosis of dental restoration. In order to achieve this study, it was performed an 3D analysis of stresses recorded in a premolar restored with a composite inlay and a ceramic inlay, the simulation being done by finite elements method (FEM) using Ansys program. The study results showed that stresses registered in the tooth restored through ceramic inlay are more favorable than those recorded in the case of the tooth restored with composite inlay. The aesthetic composite inlays are preferred instead ceramic ones by many practitioners because of the advantages it presents: requires minimal preparations, technique is easier thanks to the easier handling of composite material, allow future adjustment of the occlusal surface, being easily adjusted and repaired, are radiopaque and, last but not least, have a lower cost. The question that arises frequently in medical practice is related to inlays behavior in case of functional requirements, depending on the material from which they are made. Configuration of preparation, the technique and the materials used for cementing, and restorative materials can influence the type of resistance to fracture of these restorations. The ability of restorative materials to support the masticatory forces and distribution of stresses in the vicinity of the adhesive interface constitutes a decisive factor in acquiring a restoration with a high degree of resistance to fracture.

Abstract Objective The purpose of this study is to estimate the fatigue life of five polycrystalline zirconia CAD/CAM ceramic materials used for posterior restoration. This study presents the first time methodology to translate raw data obtained from laboratory test into useful data to predict the clinical life of dental restoration. Methods A typical model for the first molar restored crown is built and transferred into finite element software ANSYS 18.1 flor execution FEA. The materials are: two Y-TZP zirconia (LAVA (LVs), and EVEREST (KVs); IPS e.max CAD; Suprinity PC; and Celtra Duo. Two types of loads are applied, axial load and axial load followed by the sliding motion of lower jaw. The fatigue resistance of various restorative materials is determined. Results Experimental findings show that all the samples have fractured between cusps at the same location, which is slightly off the symmetry fissure plane. For crowns made of LAVA and EVEREST, the life is longer than 10 years under an axial load of 1000 N, while the lives for IPS e.max CAD; Suprinity PC; and Celtra Duo were longer than 10 years under an axial load of 185 N. The life of all-ceramic crown materials was predicted by FEA and found to conform to previous experimental and clinical observations. Conclusion Crowns made of Y-TZP zirconia has superior fatigue resistance compared to other ceramic CAD/CAM materials.

ABSTRACT Aim To evaluate and compare the microleakage of various restorative materials used as coronal barriers between endodontic appointments. Materials and methods Eighty extracted human permanent posterior teeth were prepared for standardized access cavities with dimensions of 4 × 4 × 4 mm. The teeth were then randomly divided into four groups; Kalzinol, Caviton, GC Fuji IX and GC Fuji II LC. After incubation, the samples were immersed in 2% methylene blue for 7 days. The depth of penetration was measured using a digital macroscope after longitudinal sectioning of each tooth. Kruskal-Wallis (p < 0.05) and multiple Mann-Whitney test with Bonferroni correction (p < 0.008) were used for data analysis. Results The degree of microleakage varied at the material/ tooth interface among the test materials, and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). GC Fuji II LC group showed the least median microleakage value (0.8105 ± 0.305), followed by Caviton (1.1885 ± 0.396), GC Fuji IX (3.3985 ± 0.305) and Kalzinol (4.161 ± 0.853). Conclusion Within the limitations of this study, GC Fuji II LC exhibited the best marginal seal, and has the potential to be used as a suitable coronal barrier between endodontic appointments. Clinical significance Given the prime importance that dental practitioners should thoroughly restore any tooth with a suitable coronal barrier between endodontic appointments, this study shows that Fuji II LC has the ability to maintain a hermetic seal for 7 days. Background: The most common restorative materials used in dentistry are amalgam and composite. Amalgam is a controversial material owing to its mercury toxicity. With recent advances in the properties of composite materials, there has been a shift towards its use. Objectives: The aim of this study was to understand the perceptions of undergraduate dental students in a northern Saudi Arabian dental school about the choice of restorative materials for restoring posterior teeth. Methodology: The study included undergraduate students studying in 4th and 5th year dental program in College of Dentistry, Jouf University. A four-item questionnaire with 18 close-ended questions was developed by the investigators, which were hand delivered to all the students. Data analysis is presented through tables and descriptive methods. Results: A total of 98 (out of 131) undergraduate students participated in this study. Overall, the students reported a significantly strong influence of the type of restorative materials in relation to the cavity size and margin of the restorations along with the esthetics factor(p<0.05). There was slight influence on the student’s choice because of the instructor's influence, whereas the students felt they were knowledgeable and had appropriate training to use either amalgam or composite. The study also found that patient’s preference had a strong influence on choosing composite material. The students were mostly not influenced while choosing the material as far as the safety of it was concerned. However, the patient’s influence was slight when it came to the choice of the material. A significant difference was noted among the students when it came to pregnancy-related safety concerns where the choice of material was not influenced by either amalgam or composite (p=.002). Conclusion: The undergraduate dental students at College of Dentistry, Jouf University are comfortable in using both amalgam and composite as a posterior restorative material. They are knowledgeable about both the materials and are adequately trained to use either one.

SUMMARY The purpose of this laboratory study was to compare the two-body wear resistance of different restorative materials commonly used for the indirect restoration of posterior teeth. The tested materials, based on ceramic (Imagine Press X, IPS e.max CAD, Milled Celtra Duo, Glaze-Fired Celtra Duo, Vita Mark II) and composite (Enamel Plus HRi, Enamel Plus HRi Bio-Function, Filtek Supreme XTE, Lava Ultimate), were compared with the wear properties of a type III gold alloy (Aurocast 8). Flat samples were prepared with a 6-mm thickness (n=10). Composite samples were tested after a heat polymerization cycle. All samples were exposed to a two-body wear test in a dual axis chewing simulator performing over 120,000 loading cycles. The opposing abrader cusps were fabricated from yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal. The vertical substance loss (mm) and the volume loss (mm3) were recorded, as was the wear of the antagonist cusp (mm). Mean values were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance. Significant differences among materials were detected. The heat-cured resin-based composite material Enamel Plus Bio-Function and the type III gold alloy demonstrated similar mean values for wear depth and volumetric loss.

The final color of all-ceramic restorations may be influenced by the varying thickness of the dental abutment. Eighty A2 color (MO and LT) ceramic discs and eighty A3.5 color and four different thicknesses composite discs of were produced. The measurements were performed using the Vita Easyshade spectrophotometer. The results were statistically analyzed. Conclusion: There are no significant differences (perceived by the human eye) of the color parameters in the CIE L*a*b* system when comparing different combinations.

Restorative material is a class of dental materials used for direct filling and fabrication of indirect restoration. NiCr alloy is a restorative material frequently used for dental prostheses due to its properties and economic reasons. In present work beryllium free NiCrMo alloy was developed and studied for dental restoration application. The alloy have unique characteristics of resistance to oxidation and biocompatibility; the requisites for dental prostheses. NiCrMo alloy is found to possess mechanical strength and fabrication properties suitable for dental repairs. In this study the developed alloy was tested for its mechanical properties, biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. An in-vitro biocompatibility study was carried out. No signs of toxicity and no signs of cell growth inhibition, in presence of NiCrMo alloy specimen, were observed. Mechanical properties and corrosion resistance are found in the range that is suitable for dental prostheses and easy fabrication.

An acidified dialyzed gelatin gel system was used to determine the caries resistance of a variety of restorative materials used to obturate the canal orifice of overdenture abutment teeth. The restorative materials used were Tytin, Tytin + Copalite, P30 + Scotchbond, Fuji Ionomer-Type II, and Miracle Mix. Polarized light microscopy and microradiography were used to examine the caries-like lesions adjacent to the restorations. The lesions formed in the Fuji Ionomer-Type II and Miracle Mix groups appeared arrested at the wall adjacent to the restoration, and did not penetrate apically down the wall as did those associated with the other restorative materials. The mean depths of lesions adjacent to Fuji Ionomer-Type II and Miracle Mix restorations were significantly less than those of Tytin, Tytin + Copalite, or P30 + Scotchbond.

Background: The low levels of patient satisfaction and confidence in the restoration of the gingival resorption results in impaired quality of life in both functional and psychosocial aspects. It is necessary to manufacture a dental restoration to restore the mastication, phonetic, and aesthetic functions associated with soft tissue repair. Manufacture of gingiva ceramic restorations which are believed to be an alternative to restore the aesthetic function and harmonization of the patient’s teeth. In terms of manufacturing techniques, this restoration has a level of difficulty in achieving a balance between “White aesthetic” and “aesthetic pink”. Objective: This study aims to provide knowledge to the reader of Manufacturing Technique of Metal Ceramic Restoration with Implant-Abutment at Gingival Resorption Case. Reviews: Gingiva ceramic restorations can be used to create esthetic implant-supported restorations when bone and gingival tissues are deficient and surgical replacement of such tissues is not possible. Dental technicians should be able to analyze the three-dimensional shapes of gingival anatomy, color, texture, smile components, the balance of the “pink aesthetic” and “white aesthetic”. Conclusion: Manufacturing Technique of Metal Ceramic Restoration with Implant-Abutment at Gingival Resorption Case including the manufacture of metal coping, oxidation, application of opaque coating, application of the first “white aesthetic” ceramics (Opaque Dentine, Dentine, Enamel and transpa on crown coping restorations), Application of opaque gingiva layer, gingival ceramics build-up "pink aesthetics”, first firing, followed by correction build-up, and second firing, and ends with the glazing process.

Sealing the pits and fissures of posterior teeth represents a local and specific method of caries prevention. The aim of this study was to evaluate the adhesion of two materials used in sealing pits and fissures: Pitt and Fisure and Fissurit FX (Voco), with the help of the scanning electronic microscope (SEM). The results of the study revealed a much higher quality of the Fissurit FX (Voco) product both in terms of adhesion to the enamel and material homogeneity. The Pitt and Fisure product showed a high degree of detachment from the enamel, marginal infiltration, large particles and a high concentration of inorganic particles.
