Correlation between GMAW Parameters and Mechanical Properties of Hot-Rolled, High-Strength Low-Alloy (HSLA) Steel Butt Joints

In all industrial fields, the product requirements are more and more demanding. HSLA steels are designed to provide higher atmospheric corrosion resistance and improved mechanical properties than structural steels. The paper presents the results of an experimental program based on factorial design, applied to predict the mechanical properties of butt-welded joints of S420MC and S460MC hot-rolled, high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel plates with 2mm, 4mm and 8mm thickness. Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) was used and correlations between the main process parameters and the related mechanical properties of the welded joints were found. Obtained mathematical correlations can be exploited to provide optimal combination of welding parameters to fit the quality requirements of the end-users for envisaged welded product.

Reproducibility in respect to welded structures realization is one of the main requirements for a wide variety of industrial applications. One of the international tendencies regarding the use of the steel is the replacing, in critical areas, of structural steels with high performance steel, e.g. with HSLA steels. The paper presents the results of a factorial designed experimental program focused on determining mathematical correlations between the GMAW process parameters for T joints of 4mm thick steel plates of structural (S235JR+AR according to SR EN 10025-2) and hot-rolled, high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel plates (S420MC according to EN 10025-4), respectively. A comparison between the obtained mathematical correlations that connect the welding parameters and the main mechanical characteristics is presented. The correlations can be used for applying the optimal combination of welding process parameters for realizing the T-joints of welded products.

This paper describes the metallurgical approaches for producing 415MPa and 460MPa yield strength offshore structural steel plates and the mechanical properties of the steel plates and their welded joints. A thermo-mechanical control process (TMCP) was adopted to manufacture YP415MPa and YP460MPa steel plates with weldability comparable to conventional YP355MPa steel plates. The Charpy impact and CTOD tests of the steel plates and their welded joints proved to be very good.

3-mm thick Al-12.7Si-0.7Mg alloy plates were cut from the hot extrusion profiles. A butt-welding joint was made by gas metal arc welding (GMAW). The microstructures and mechanical properties of welded joint were studied by scanning electron microscope and tensile test methods. The results show that weld bead with good appearance and internal quality was obtained under the optimized welding parameters. The ultimate tensile strength for base material and welded joints of hot extrusion Al-12.7Si-0.7Mg alloy are much higher than that of 6063 alloy in T4 condition.

In this paper, a comparison of the mechanical properties of high-strength low-alloy S460N steel welded joints is presented. The welded joints were made by the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process in the air environment and water, by the local cavity welding method. Welded joints were tested following the EN ISO 15614-1:2017 standard. After welding, the non-destructive—visual, penetrant, radiographic, and ultrasonic (phased array) tests were performed. In the next step, the destructive tests, as static tensile-, bending-, impact- metallographic (macroscopic and microscopic) tests, and Vickers HV10 measurements were made. The influence of weld porosity on the mechanical properties of the tested joints was also assessed. The performed tests showed that the tensile strength of the joints manufactured in water (567 MPa) could be similar to the air welded joint (570 MPa). The standard deviations from the measurements were—47 MPa in water and 33 MPa in the air. However, it was also stated that in the case of a complex state of stress, for example, bending, torsional and tensile stresses, the welding imperfections (e.g., pores) significantly decrease the properties of the welded joint. In areas characterized by porosity the tensile strength decreased to 503 MPa. Significant differences were observed for bending tests. During the bending of the underwater welded joint, a smaller bending angle broke the specimen than was the case during the air welded joint bending. Also, the toughness and hardness of joints obtained in both environments were different. The minimum toughness for specimens welded in water was 49 J (in the area characterized by high porosity) and in the air it was 125 J (with a standard deviation of 23 J). The hardness in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) for the underwater joint in the non-tempered area was above 400 HV10 (with a standard deviation of 37 HV10) and for the air joint below 300 HV10 (with a standard deviation of 17 HV10). The performed investigations showed the behavior of S460N steel, which is characterized by a high value of carbon equivalent (CeIIW) 0.464%, during local cavity welding.

Good combination of high strength and high toughness has been considered as a critical factor of ultra-high strength steel plates. In this paper, a novel high strength steel plate of HSLA type containing Cu with 910MPa yield strength and 1163MPa tensile strength has been developed using an advanced TMCP (thermo-mechanical control processing) technology. The steel plates provide excellent combination of high strength, toughness and deformability. Microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of this steel during hot-working have been investigated. It is demonstrated that, at the relatively higher finish rolling temperature and cooling rate, the microstructure consists of acicular and granular bainite structures and a small amount of low bainite /martensite whose lath width is approximately 200~300nm. For the as-rolled conditions, despite the high strength and so low yield ratio, impact energy about 154J and fully ductility fracture at -90°C can still be obtained as documented for as-hot rolled plates.

The paper presents the research results on the mechanical properties of aluminum alloy 7020 and its FSW and MIG welded joints. For comparison, alloy 5083 – the most currently used in shipbuilding alloy was chosen as well as 5059 – the new high-strength alloy. Besides, the native material alloys there were investigated their joints welded by FSW and MIG – the same methods as alloy 7020. Welding parameters used for the connection of the sheets made of 7020, 5083 and 5059 alloys were presented. Metallographic analysis showed the correct construction of structural bonded joints.Friction Stir Welding (FSW) – a new technology can be successfully used for butt welding of different types of aluminum alloy sheets. FSW method can be an alternative to traditional arc welding methods, especially MIG, which is the most common method of joining aluminum alloys used in shipbuilding. The research was carried out using a static tensile test in accordance with the requirements of the Polish Standards PN-EN ISO 4136:2011 and PN-EN ISO 6892-1:2010. Flat samples cut perpendicular to the direction of rolling were used. The research was conducted at the temperature of +20 oC.Friction stir welded joints of tested alloys have higher strength properties as compared to MIG welded joints. The 7020 alloy has higher strength properties then alloys 5083 and 5059. The yield stress is higher by 14.8% as compared to alloy 5083, and by 11.7% as compared to the alloy 5059. Plastic properties of alloy 7020 are the lowest, but with reserves meet the requirements of classification societies. The joints welded by FSW of alloy 7020 have the highest strength properties of all researched joints – higher then alloys 5083 and 5059 joints welded by FSW and joints of all alloys welded by MIG.

In many applications that use high strength steels, structural integrity depends greatly on weld quality. Imperfections and the weld bead geometry are influencing factors on mechanical properties of the welded joints but, especially in the fatigue strength, they cause a great decrease. The proper knowledge of these two factors is important from the nominal stress approach to the fracture mechanics approaches. Studies concerning the profile and imperfections of the weld bead in laser welding for thin plates of high strength steels are scarce. In this work, these two aspects are covered for five series single and double-welded joints, butt joints in a 3 mm thick HSLA steel, welded in a small range of welding parameters. The actual profiles captured with profilometer were modeled with proposed geometric parameters achieving an adequate fit with values of the coefficient of determination ℜ2 greater than 0.9000. Description of imperfections includes the distributions of porosity and undercuts. The evaluation of the weld quality, taking as guide the ISO 13919-1 standard determined B and D levels for the welded series while based on the stress-concentrating effect, showed a greater detriment in those series with undercuts and excessive penetration. The analysis of variance validated the results of the different combinations of laser welding parameters and showed, for the factorial experimental design, a more significant effect of the welding speed.

In joining aluminum alloy to galvanized (GI) steel, the huge gap of thermophysical properties, defects by zinc from the steel surface, and formation of excessive brittle Fe-Al intermetallics (IMC) are the main factors that deteriorate the joint quality. In this study, alternating current pulse gas metal arc welding (AC pulse GMAW) was suggested as a solution with a mix of electrode positive and negative modes. A 1.2 mm thick AA5052 aluminum alloy and GI steel plates were joined using 1.2 mm diameter AA4047 filler wire. A comparative study on the joint interface was conducted varying the welding current and electrode-negative (EN) ratio to investigate the effect of different welding parameters on the growth of the Fe-Al intermetallics (IMC) layer, the effect of zinc, and the mechanical characteristics of the joints. It was confirmed that the change of polarity affects the distribution of zinc element in the joints. An increase in the EN ratio suppressed the growth of the IMC layer to 3.59 μm with decreased heat input. The maximum tensile-shear strength of the welded joints was approximately 171 MPa (78% joint efficiency) at the welding current of 50 A with 20% EN ratio.
